@maddyz: She's been named since before we were pregnant this time! If we ever have a third (highly unlikely), we have names picked out for them (Violet Avery and James Michael).

@Christy412: how stressful! Have you gotten results from the test yet?

@maddyz: no names at all. We pretty much stopped talking about it because we have no clue. Because if we ignore it long enough it won't be a problem anymore, right? Haha

@avivoca: that's the thing, lo1 was named before we even knew we wanted kids and it was just a matter of which was his first name and weigh the middle. So really, with my freak out, we could have just called him by his middle name.

    On the list now
    Robin
    Orson
    Warren

    Middle name is Blake

Lo 1 is Davey (David Cecil)

@maddyz: this kid may be unnamed for a bit if it is a boy. We have too many choices on the table right now. We're hoping seeing the baby will help.

@maddyz: we just used the boy name we picked if LO1 was a boy. I would probably have an unnamed baby if this one was a girl.

I got discharged today but baby boy has to stay in the NICU for a bit to run through a course of antibiotics. He had a weird rash that might have been a diaper allergy but they are treating with antibiotics just in case.

@katsupgirl: oh I'm sorry he won't be coming home with you today. Did they give you any indication as to how long he might need to stay in the NICU?

    @MrsKoala: @Periwinkle: @maddyz: @skipra: @avivoca: Thanks Ladies!

I'm still not sure when he will get to come home. It might be Tuesday/Wednesday if the rash clears up. So far it's looking better but still red. Now that I'm discharged we spend the day going back at forth so I can breastfeed every 3 hours. I've pumped for the overnight and hope it will be enough. The feeding was easier when I was in the hospital but I needed to get back to DD who was starting to have a rough time.

UPDATE: Thanks so much for the positive vibes, prayers and well wishes! They must've worked because baby boy is getting discharged later today. I was feeling terrible about not seeing him during the overnight so this was great news when I went to see him this morning.

@katsupgirl: So glad to hear this!

As for me, I've been on steroids (prednisone) a week to increase my platelet count. We redid bloodwork today to see whether they've gone up. If they go up, I'll go off steroids and see where we are next week. If they stay the same or go down, we'll talk to the MFM and then likely induce very soon. Steroids absolutely suck. They make me thirsty, sweaty, and I gained almost 4 lbs in 6 days. This is from someone who has only gained about 22 lbs the entire pregnancy and only about 2 in the last 4 weeks. So my body is feeling it. But whatever we have to do to get this girl here safe and me safely through delivery is fine by me.

  22. MrsKoala

    cantaloupe / 6869 posts

@mrsjd: The steroids sound awful. I hope they did the trick, though. I'll be thinking of you!

  23. avivoca

Low point of today: The lady at the coffee shop telling me I looked like I was going to have a big baby. Apparently, she had uncontrolled diabetes and her son was 14 pounds. So I'm like, "NOPE, I had GD last time and my baby was 7 lbs. 10.5 oz." The "suck it" you might detect was implied.

High point of the day: Man on the street on the walk back from the coffee shop told me that I would make a beautiful mother.

  24. mrsjd

    clementine / 777 posts

@avivoca: That is a serious low and high. That lady is a weirdo who clearly had some substandard prenatal care. Good god people. And I agree with the gentleman, you ARE a beautiful mother.

  25. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@mrsjd: Her son is 25, so it was 1991. She also has juvenile diabetes and admitted to not taking care of herself. But still, DAMN, I do not need to hear about your 14 pound baby tearing your insides up. I'm glad he was safe and sound and so are you, but jeez.

  26. mrsjd

    clementine / 777 posts

Great news! The steroids worked and my platelets jumped up to a great (for me) level. I've earned another week without an induction. We will recheck next week and plan from there! Hopefully I'll be able to go into labor on my own!

  27. katsupgirl

    nectarine / 2280 posts

@mrsjd: Those steroids had better done their job with all those crappy side effects. That's great news!

@avivoca: you handled yourself well. I probably would not have been so kind.

@mrsjd: I'm SO happy to hear your good news. I will keep thinking good thoughts for you and hoping that you can keep getting one week closer at a time.

@avivoca: omg what a day you had! I think there should be more people in the world like the man who complimented you (and he's right!) and fewer like that woman. Who says that to a pregnant woman?!

I hope everyone is having a good week so far. I have been feeling more off than usual the past few days and am trying not to think too much about it. On Saturday, I started experiencing what I can only imagine to be Braxton Hicks contractions (I never had them with LO). The weird part is that it's not only on the top of my stomach but also very low down. It feels like Baby is raising his hand/kicking his leg into me for about 30 seconds at a time. Some are painful and some are not. They went away on Sunday but then came back again yesterday.

It makes me nervous, because I am so, so far from feeling even close to ready for this baby! I know so many people are ready to be done with pregnancy (and believe me, some days I am too) but I just don't feel ready yet. Our house is under construction still so we have not yet moved LO into his new room and I haven't been able to "nest" in the way I want to. We had to empty two whole rooms to have the work done and are currently storing everything in our bedroom so I am just feeling overwhelmed by stuff and no where to put it yet. It looks like the work upstairs may be done tomorrow but we now need to wait for new carpet in LO's new room and that will take a few more weeks... so we cannot even begin to transition him over or get the nursery ready. I know in the end that it doesn't really matter and that babies need very little to begin, but I am of course thinking back to before LO was born and I felt so "ready." I just feel like I am faking it this time and it is so uncomfortable for me. Which of course makes me truly believe that Baby will come earlier than expected and that I will have to deal with it then.

I am hoping to spend some time this week (as energy/time allows) to start organizing. I just feel so late to the game this time but know that it's been out of my control. Also, work has been crazy so it's been hard to even take a day here or there to spend getting ready. Going to try to take either Thursday or Friday off to get myself prepped a bit. Part of me just wishes that I could sit back and relax but I feel like I am racing against a clock. Of course, I would also feel better if I knew when Baby was going to come... LO came at 40+2 and I would be very, very happy with a similar timeline this time!

    End Tuesday morning vent.

    34 week update:

    1) I gained 3 lbs. in two weeks. I guess I should lay off of the ice cream. Baby sounded good, 148-150 HB, blood pressure was good, and my fasting numbers are creeping up, so I need to really make sure I get adequate protein.

    2) My plan to use up a bunch of vacation in September is kaput. For STD, I need to work until I have this baby because I have to have at least 35 hours a week to qualify. So my new plan is to take a 1/2 day every Tuesday in September, schedule my midwife/chiropractor appointments for those days, and then that should leave me enough vacation/comp for 1.5 to 2 weeks after my due date to have the baby and use time but not be in the office.

    Checking in on everyone!

    @avivoca: That stinks about STD.

@Periwinkle: I'm with you on the keep this baby in there.

  31. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@mrsjd: It's worse for my coworker, she's part-time and basically working up until her water breaks because she needs the hours to qualify and doesn't get vacation time.

  32. mrsjd

    clementine / 777 posts

@avivoca: That is tough. Yet another reminder we need better family leave policies in this country. I get 8 weeks full paid plus accrued vacation. I'm incredibly fortunately, but the prior firm I worked at would've given me 12 weeks paid and I keep wishing I had that.

ETA: I'm working up until my water breaks or I get induced. I work in an office setting so it's fine but I'm basically running on anxiety and adrenaline right now.

  33. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@mrsjd: We really do! I get so angry when I see people talking about how everyone shouldn't have to pay for some to have a baby, how small businesses can't handle it, and how terrible it will be, but clearly we have lots of countries in this world who are doing it and it's flourishing.

ETA: I'm working until my due date too. I had my baby 3 days late last time and took off at 39 weeks, so I was bored for a week and a half.

@avivoca: @mrsjd: It's just crazy how much of a discrepancy there is in how companies in the US handle maternity leave. With my job (I work for a public college), I am protected by FMLA and my state's FLA, but nothing at all is paid unless you use all of your sick and vacation time. Which is fine and I am more than willing to do, but I know of so many industries which pay employees for a certain period of time. Obviously I feel incredibly fortunate that I can fund my own leave in part through my PTO, but what a shame that organizations do not support working families with this.

What's hard for me is that I cannot even begin to take STD until I use up all of my sick time, which is a blessing and a curse. I am happy to be paid in full for part of my leave because of it, but I have been banking this time for years and it will be basically gone when I come back in the new year, with the exception of next year's time which will be applied in January. I would have almost preferred to use half of my accrued time and then maybe go on STD benefits for the remainder of my leave. I just worry about not having enough sick time when the baby is still young.

@Periwinkle: It really is. I work for a non-profit and FMLA does not apply to us because we have less than 50 employees. I know I am extremely fortunate to have 12 weeks of leave and even more fortunate to have STD to rely on this time. Last time, I had to use my sick/comp/vacation time concurrently with my unpaid leave, so I ended up getting paid half for October and November and nothing for December. I am salaried, so I was expecting to get paid Jan. 1, but ended up not getting paid until Jan. 15. It was a nightmare trying to pay for daycare, having the hospital hounding me for my unpaid bills (I made sure to let the billing office know when they made snide remarks that I was on unpaid leave and had to get paid before I could pay them), and trying to get basic necessities all on my husband's income. We don't live outside of our means, but it was HARD.

I also need the baby to stay put a few more weeks. We have some major work to do before we can move LO2 out of the nursery and couldn't even start until after our vacation because we needed the room for visitors. I am trying not to worry because the baby will be in our room through the winter and it's not a big deal if LO2 is still in the nursery BUT I have no where to unpack all the baby clothes because we need to get LO2's clothes out of the dresser and our problem is there is no place in his new room for a dresser. And our infant car seat is not in the best shape so we need to get a new one but actually have to go to the store to see which one will fit best in the car.

@Periwinkle: @avivoca: @mrsjd: maternity leave is terrible here. I SAH now but probably would not if there were better policies. My old company was super generous, allowing me even more than the FMLA required 12 weeks but LO1 was failure to thrive and refused bottles so I had no choice but to SAH. My boss tried to extend my leave further but they did lay offs so of course I was not protected. I do like being able to SAH but I would prefer to work part-time. It just doesn't make sense to deal with all the maternity leave hassle when we are not done growing our family. AND when I did go out on maternity leave, I was induced and in the hospital from Tuesday morning. You would think that coverage would kick in then because ummm I was in the hospital and not able to work but they wouldn't start until the day LO was born which was Thursday. So I should have gotten extra STD but instead had to use up my vacation time. Totally ridiculous!

Anyone else in nesting mode? I cleaned out our cabinets and rearranged things and tossed a bunch of stuff this morning. I am getting ready to tackle some stuff upstairs in the bedroom now. Luckily LO1 & 2 are happy playing together today!

@avivoca: Ice Creamis my happy place! Couldn't have been the ice cream.

@Periwinkle: Im right with you about not being ready. I couldn't figure out what to do. I completely forgot to bring clothes to bring him home in. I was really phoning it in this time around. I made my husband my proxy nester so that at least some things got accomplished before baby. Such a stressful time!

  39. avivoca

@skipra: I'm nesting by sewing ALL THE THINGS. Like, H wants to be Skye from Paw Patrol for Halloween and I hate the commercial costumes, so I am sewing it from scratch and had a friend make her a tutu. She also wants a Skye birthday party, so I am using leftover fabric to make her a birthday dress with Skye and Everest on it. And I am making things for my friend's daughter.
