@Smurfette: I totally feel ya on the ttc front. My DH would probably prefer to be one and done because he's afraid of how crazy it will be. But he said, "I know I would never really regret having another. But I could imagine regretting not having another." So he said we should just bite the bullet and go for it- in August. Seems terrifying actually...

@travellingbee: That is my fear, that we will regret we never had another. But I think the only way to do it is sell our house, move the burbs so we have a lower house payment and day care. DH hates the burbs.
    Good luck to yall TTC!

@Smurfette: really hope you guys can find a way TTC wise that both of you are happy with.

@travellingbee: my DH keeps astonishing me, I always said (pre-baby) I'd like 3 kids, he always said we'll do two and see from there; nowadays he's all for having 3... We'll see with how many we'll end up with.

@Pumuckl: Thanks. Me too. It is such a hard decision. I never thought that I would consider just one.

@Smurfette: what about waiting an extra year so that you have less time overlapping when they're both in daycare? A year less of daycare payments would help right?

  6. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@travellingbee: Yeah that would help but still is more then just day care expense. Labor & delivery expense (spent about $3K for R), missed wages while on maternity leave, day to day expenses, etc. We aren't just looking at day care expenses. We both would be miserable if we were pitching every single penny in order to have another. Plus that puts me at 37 and getting pregnant. So time isn't' on our side.

@Smurfette: I understand. I'm 37 this year too. and it is certainly expensive to have a baby.

There's a house for sale down the street from me, @smurfette

@Smurfette: Oooh, there's a house for sale in my cul-de-sac!!! It's cold in the winter, but I'll teach you how to manage! And we can go skiing!!

Isaac was trying to run tonight and it was too funny. He would just fall face first, laugh and do it again. What a little goofball.

@Smurfette: There are lots of houses for sale in my neighbourhood, if you want to move countries!! lol. I hope that you can come to a decision that you are both happy with.

@Mrs. High Heels: Hope your solo week goes well. You are going to enjoy your date night at the end of this week.

@Corduroy: That is a good night sleep, hope it continues.

@Smurfette: Wow, that's a lot of out of pocket expenses for a new baby. I can understand your concern! Plus, the solo parenting with two seems nearly impossible. But you never know what the next year will hold. I hope you both can come to a TTC decision that you'll be at peace with short and long term. Move here and we can do a nanny-share for both LO #2s! And I'll babysit in the summers. I only charge one bottle of wine a week.

@travellingbee: We are thinking about fall TTC too. Maybe we'll be Spring 2015 Mama buddies! However, there's a chance we may wait until spring. We're going to try to play it by ear but I totally overanalyze it.

@ALV91711: The running sounds adorable! It always amazes me how they fall down and then literally bounce back up!

@Corduroy: Awe, how's her booboo healing? Pete crashed into his baby piano a few months ago and had a black eye. I felt so badly for him and so embarrassed when we left the house! But I think most people understand that toddlers are bound to get some bumps and bruises. The only way to avoid it is to be a totally crazy helicopter mom who bubble wraps her kids, which isn't a great strategy either...

Pete is a climbing monkey these days. He's learned that he can climb on furniture and now he's all over the couch, chairs, coffee table, kitchen table. Definitely keeping me busy during our days at home together!

  14. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@QueensBee: Now that is a child care payment I would have no issue with paying! R's favorite thing to do is climb!

@ALV91711: hahaha, awesome! Xander's trying to run too and would fall a TON when he first started! He's getting better, but he's still not very fast unless he's pushing his walker or something else, haha.

@QueensBee: Ugh, climbing! Xander LOVES to climb onto the coffee table. He positions a toy so he can stand on it and climb up. I don't mind, but then he'll stand up and that's a big no-no! I'm nervous about him trying to climb our bookcases... I haven't anchored them yet!

  16. QueensBee

    pear / 1718 posts

@Adira: I know, we have to anchor bookshelves as well! I bought all the equipment but then never actually installed it. Maybe this weekend...

  17. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@QueensBee: Same here - my bookcases even came with anchors and I just didn't do it.

  18. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

I forgot to mention - although we haven't had much luck with finger foods, I did buy an OXO divided plate for Xander and I've been serving him dinner in that and letting him spoon feed himself too. It's a MESS, but he's definitely getting better at it and it keeps him occupied while eating! Although he only eats the veggies, haha. I have to spoon feed him the meat and yogurt!

  19. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Is he getting better about table food?

We are still working on a spoon, she usually holds it and eats with the other hand. Started with a fork Sun night and she seems to like it better. Work in process for sure. Last night I had so much rice to clean up.

  20. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Umm... no. Supposedly he eats some stuff at daycare, but they list things as a group like "meatballs, green beans, bread" and then write "some" so I wonder if he's really eating some of everything or just ate the bread, haha. He's great with breads and crackers, but still won't eat anything else for me!

  21. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: bummer. Is he gaining weight?

  22. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Oh yeah, he's gaining just fine, but we also still give him plenty of purees and he eats a TON (in puree form)!

  23. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Does your pedi think it is ok? Just wondering when they think he should be eating just more table foods and less purees?

  24. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: She didn't seem concerned when I mentioned it at our 15 month visit! Not sure when she expects him to be eating more... she just said to keep offering.

  25. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Cool. Hopefully he will be better about it by 18 months!

  26. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I HOPE so! If not, I may have to insist that he has issues and get some PT or something for him because I'm not sure what else to do besides keep offering and that doesn't seem to be working!

  27. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: yeah by 18 months I would look into seeing if there is an underlying issue. You can't feed him purees forever!

  28. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@adira, what does your ped say? I hope one day he just wakes up and is like MMM FOOD YESSSS.

My kid is OBSESSED with the fork right now. We give her our fork and she freaking EATS with it. It's so hilarious. And it takes her FOREVER to eat now. She wants a real cup, too, but it's insanely messy.

@corduroy, E has so many scratches and bloodied knees from being outside now! Gah.

Sorry folks, have been MIA for no good reason. Sometimes this thread gets overwhelming, and then I feel bad for not responding to people!

@Adira: I'm sure you've tried this, but maybe letting him feed himself finger foods and whatever with a spoon/fork would help. Sometimes if T won't eat I give her a fork and it works! She really likes trying to use it.

T gets massive welts from mosquito bites that last for a week! She just got one on her cheek!
We are slowly preparing to start childcare in about a month....sometimes I feel ready, mostly I just dread it. We have been having a ton of fun this summer!

  30. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

    @Smurfette: I know!!!

    @blackbird: That's my hope too!!

@Silva: I have not tried that, but I will! Thanks for the idea!!

  31. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: How's sleep going? Any better? Poor girl with the bites. It is bitter sweet, but I bet you are going to like being back at work!
@blackbird: We tried giving R a cup with a trainer lid on it and she still spilled it all over the place. but she LOVES when we let her drink water from our cup when we hold it.

  32. blackbird

    wonderful grape / 20453 posts

@Smurfette, same! She is ALL over my cup. So we gave her a little kiddie cup (open) with maybe half an inch of water. She choked on it quite a bit but she'll figure it out.

  33. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Smurfette: at the risk of jinxing ourselves, better! We have fully night weaned. She is still waking up usually once a night, around 4:30. But it's been better! My husband is handling a lot more of the wake ups now, which means often I don't have to get out of bed at all. Last night he had to give her some water at around midnight, but otherwise she's been much better!

  34. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: That is great!! Just stick a sippy cup of water in the crib then he doesn't have to get up
@blackbird: One day R picked up a cup I left on the coffee table by accident. She was choking cause it was so much water but still wanted more. She was soaked.

I have been giving B cutlery since he's about a year old and it's so funny to see his development, he even managed to eat most of his rice for dinner today with it.

He also loves to drink from an open cup and it's messy so I probably don't let him practice enough. Bad mummy....

@Silva: ouch on the bites. I was so, so sorry for B when had 3 or 4 on his tiny wrist a couple of weeks ago. Luckily they didn't seem to itch, hope the same goes for T! We really do as @Smurfette: suggested and have a sippy cup of water in his crib. I often have to refill it when I go to bed.

  36. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Pumuckl: @Smurfette: hmmm... We use a thermos straw cup. She can't push the bottom to open the top, and it kind of leaks if it tips over without the lid. I don't have any sippy cups.....is there one that doesn't leak and is pretty easy? She hasn't really ever used one!

  37. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: these are the best ones we have that don't leak! Left is Munchkin and the right is Disney

All this talk of cups and utensils today has me assessing our current use of them.

Pete drinks really well out of an open cup. I often give him a toddler size glass cup of water with his meals, Montessori style, and he does great with it. I haven't been brave enough to try it with milk yet. Maybe I should give it a go soon.

However, I am feeling like we are a bit behind on the use of utensils. We hardly have any toddler size utensils (one fork and one spoon in the house), and I hate having to wash extra dishes, so I hardly ever give him one to try out. You all are reminding me that I should start that soon or he is going to be the gross kid eating yogurt, spaghetti, and baked potato with his fingers in school! Yuck!

We are also guilty of still giving a bottle sometime.
He is totally fine with drinking from open cup, straw cup, and sippy cup, but he does occasionally spill or they leak. When I know he's going to be drinking milk on an upholstered piece of furniture (like our bed or the nursery glider), I make him a bottle because the risk of a spill is much lower (hangs head in shame).

I tried putting Pete in a booster seat for dinner instead of his high chair tonight. He fit just fine but was highly skeptical and screamed the whole time. I had to move him back to his high chair because he was refusing to eat. I thought he'd be all excited to eat at the grown up table but I was wrong!

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@QueensBee: that is great he drinks from a regular cup. I gave r a fork tonight and she just held it mostly and ate with her fingers. So frustrating. I wonder if day care isn't working on it as much. But we def. need to at home. Don't feel bad about the bottles. Lots still use them. I hate when R gets milk on the couch. We need a new one but now we are going to wait. I would think he would like the booster too. We still use the high chair.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@QueensBee: I JUST started giving Xander utensils just this week for the first time, so don't feel bad! And only a spoon so far!

@Smurfette: Our daycare isn't doing utensils at all yet. They still just do finger foods only with no utensils!
