@.twist.: Ours is quite similar to @JamieLee: and I need it for me because I have never cared for a newborn! DH also needs it bc he has never cared for a child ever! We're in for fun!

@.twist.: I'm sure there's still time and besides, even if DH has taken the class, there's no reason for you to miss out.

@Alivoo01: I am firmly in denial about most of the stuff related to the actual birth, so no plans for me yet!

We couldn't find any newborn care classes in my city. I was sad, because it sounded reassuring.

About tearing: Have any of you heard of the Epi-No? It's some sort of device that is supposed to prevent tearing. My physio recommended it to me and wants me to come in and try it out.

You can read about it at http://www.pelvicfloorwellness.com/ and look under Products. I wonder if its just a big hoax though because its $200 to buy.

I am terrified of tearing too

I think this board in general has given me realistic expectations of childcare. I did care for my sister (10 year age difference) but she's in her twenties now, so I can't say I remember much of it.

I guess my view on labor is: it's going to happen, there's nothing I can do about it, so I might as well learn to accept it! tearing freaks me the hell out; if you told a guy you were going to rip his weewee to shove a baby out of it he would NOT be okay with it! My coworker said it wasn't that bad though. She had an episiotomy (along with an epidural) and she was fine; she said she couldn't even feel it, though her DH was appalled (and watched...lol!). She was one who didn't take any classes; she figured they would tell her what to do when she was there, and there was no use in freaking out over possible complications that may never happen.

I signed up for two classes: childbirth education (two days, five hours each day, plus a hospital tour later in the month...the paperwork says insurance may partially reimburse, I really need to look into this) and breastfeeding basics (2.5 hours long).

Oh my goodness, I can't believe what just happened to me!! I was all set to attend my first prenatal yoga class - went to get cash, got home, changed and was about to walk out the door when I suddenly sneezed so hard that I peed myself! My yoga pants are soaking wet and they are my only pair. I quickly washed them in the sink in vain and tried to use a blow dryer to dry them, but after 15 minutes they are still soaking wet.

Note to self: own more than one pair of yoga pants and also make sure they are the quick-dry fabric!!

Good evening everyone! Hope y'all are having a great day so far!

@.twist.: don't worry, you can totally sign up for classes still (if you do decide you want them).

@Alivoo01: @JamieLee:@Mrs D: regarding the tearing... I work on the OB floor of a hospital and one of the nurses said the biggest thing she could recommend was NOT pushing until you are sure you are dilated to 10cm. Apparently if you try to push before your body is ready, you can end up with 2 lanes merging into 1... yikes!

@lawbee11: Oooo, infant CPR. That is a really good idea. I need to probably sign up for that too, lol. That will make about 4 classes I think!

@Modern Daisy: Oh no!!!! I've been so scared about this. Now that allergy season is here I've started sneezing and I've had a couple of close calls. I'm just waiting for the day at work when I pee my pants I hope you make the next class!

@Modern Daisy: ok, I feel your pain. I was fighting a really really bad cough for almost all of March and quite a few times I coughed really hard and peed a bit. I started wearing a panty liner just to be safe! I've heard it's still common for quite a while/indefinitely postpartum!

@Modern Daisy: so the other day I was sitting in the family room with DH and all the sudden a sneeze snuck up on me and yup - peed probably a Tbs or two. Immediately started laughing and ran to the bathroom with DH going "what just happened". I came back and told him I sneezed and peed myself - told him it was totally normal since my bladder was a mess right now- he called BS until I made my step father explain to him that it was legit! Totally feel your pain!!!

@StrawberryBee: Honestly both my mom and sister have told me that yes it is super painful but the minute its over you forget the way it feels completely and really cant recreate the pain mentally. So its like you just gotta get through it like millions have before you and then its amazing. Thats how I look at it anyways...

Thanks for the classes advice ladies. I think I will definitely try to sign up for the Infant CPR & Breastfeeding classes. I think the rest I can deal with.

@Modern Daisy: Oh gosh that sucks!!! Like the others, I've totally felt a lot leakier since becoming pregnant! It's kind of AWFUL. I'm hoping it really doesn't last long post-partum but I guess we'll see. I have those weird metal balls that you stick up your vag to help with tightening... I'll probably start using those after baby! LOL. TMI? Sorry.haha

@Mrs D: That's hilarious that your DH didn't believe you and I love that you laughed! haha. I have a similar story. We were watching a movie with our two boys a couple nights ago. I've been sick and sneezy lately. Something exciting was going on in the movie and I sneezed really hard and farted REALLY loud at the same time (the sneeze caused it! haha) My DH looked at me, we both looked at the boys who were totally oblivious and captivated in the movie, and both started laughing hysterically!

    Hi Ladies!
I've been really MIA lately. You guys are so fast with responses and topics! I don't think I've written since 8 weeks(ish). I'm now 20 weeks and going strong! I had a MC scare at 10 weeks with bleeding-it really scared me, so I took a HelloBee break to take my mind off of it. However, I've been following the conversations! Everyone is so supportive here and has some really great ideas flowing on decorating, products, and general baby knowledge. I won't try to catch up now, but we are going for our gender scan 4/15/13! I can't wait. I'm betting on girl...but I'll let you know! I also caved and bought a crib yesterday. As well as an Ergo, diaper bag, and toy chest....I can't stop!

@Mrs Bicycle: Glad to have you back!

Has anyone begun to think (I may be cray cray) about what to have our End-of-summer babies wear? I'm not sure what to get? Do you plan on getting them footwear - or a lot of little socks because it may be too hot. I am looking (read:obsessing) at newborn clothes and socks and shoes and hats etc. Does anyone have a plan? I feel a little overwhelmed at what I should have ready for the little guy.

@.twist.: I totally just bought him a little onsie with a bowtie (I have a problem), that I was thinking may be a "Coming Home" outfit of sorts. It comes in 6 month to 9 month sizes. It probably will sit in his closet or have to be paired with shorts or pants or something. GAH! I need to calm down...

@Modern Daisy: Oh no!! I haven’t had any leaks yet, but any time I feel the urge to pee, I go! I don’t wait!! I have an itty bitty bladder to begin with.

@Delight: Going to read up on the product you posted now, but $200?! Yikes!

@Mrs Bicycle: So sorry to hear about your scare!! Yay for everything being fine and going strong now!

@.twist.: Thanks for keeping the list updated! Funny how we’re pretty even on the genders!

@greenebee: I’ve only purchased onesies because the Texas heat is unbearable (116+) so we’ll probably try to keep clothes to a minimum to help keep DS cool.

  25. JamieLee

    clementine / 930 posts

@greenebee: I'm with you on the thinking (obsessing) over clothes. I actually started making a list of the different sizes, what seasons they would correspond with and what I think the bare minimum we will need would be.

But we live in northern Michigan, and the weather is pretty much a crapshoot, so I feel like I need to be prepared for hot, warm, and cool weather for newborn and 0-3 month sizes.

For example, last year in March, it snowed 27 inches one weekend, and then a week later, it was 80...this time last year we were mushroom hunting and it looked like spring, right now we have a fresh coating of snow and we're supposed to get 5 more inches tomorrow!

August and September can be really warm, or it can already be feeling like fall...crazy Michigan weather!

I figure that sizing will go like this:

    Newborn - summer
    0-3 months - summer/fall
    3 months - fall/winter
    6 months - winter
    9 months - winter/spring
    12 months - spring/summer

  26. Modern Daisy

    grapefruit / 4187 posts

@greenebee: That's a really good thing to think about for sure! For now, my plan is to wait until after our showers to start stocking up on essentials because I feel like even though we didn't register for any clothes, we will get piles of them. And you only need so many newborn clothes!

Then I was going to spend some time picking out the perfect coming home from the hospital outfit - probably a u of m outfit since DH is a die-hard fan and football season will be about to start. And depending on what I get at the showers, I will start stocking up on 'basics' like the following in different sizes: onesies, t-shirts, shorts, pants, hoodies and soft shoes. I'll wait to buy anythign pricey until we actually need it like a winter coat since I won't know what size to order.

Man, thanks a lot!! Now I'm going to start browing online when I was being so good up until now!

@greenebee: I've been thinking about his coming home outfit too. My MIL seems to REALLY want me to use this passed down outfit, but I really dislike it and want something a bit cuter. haha Don't worry, I have gone a bit nuts too!!

@Alivoo01: I really enjoy doing it. I hope no one thinks I'm trying to be controlling! Anyone is free to update it. I just enjoy it. hahaha I'm a weirdo. I also really like that we're so even, it will be interesting to see who tips the scales or if we stay pretty even!

@JamieLee: You are SO organized it kills me. I really like your breakdown of sizes vs. seasons. I'm totally going to steal it!

@Modern Daisy: Between not peaking at your gender card and not buying it, I think you have a will power I've never seen before!

    Thanks everyone!
@ Mrs D I bought this one http://www.justforbabies.net/Skip-Hop-Duo-Essential-Diaper-Bag-In-Gray_i58047 off Gilt. It was a great deal at on $30.00! I thought it's a nice gender neutral bag for my hubby too. My eye though is on a Kate Spade one....we'll see if that happens. Probably not. I also got the Jenny Lind Di Vinci Crib in ebony. I love the vintage look of it. Gilt also had a sale of Ergo carriers--not much of a discount...but they were to cute to pass up!

Oh my goodness, ralph lauren is having a 25% off sale! It is taking every ounce of willpower not to buy my baby boy the exact same outfit his daddy is wearing today lol!! And gap has the cutest little bear hoodies ugh!! This is torture!

  30. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@Mrs Bicycle: Cute cute cute purchases! I got my diaper bag off Gilt too!

@JamieLee: Seriously our weather is crazy!!! Although, I have to say I am SO glad we did not have another Indian summer because I could not handle another poor apple and cherry crop season. I have been craving Cherry's like crazy - July cant come soon enough!

As for clothes, I plan to really try to limit my purchasing to Onsies which can be versatile (i.e. with jeans, pants, or just worn around the house). I know I will get outfits from others - so aside from maybe one or two cute outfits for special occasions I am going to try to control myself. I read something online about making sure to have newborn sizes as well as 0-3 mos sizes. My plan is as follows for the basics:

    Newborn Clothes (August/Sept):
5 pack white onsies, 3 footed pj's, 2 sleep sacks, 2 sleeveless sleep sacks, 1 or 2 pairs of basic pants (cotton), 1 warmer footed onsie for night time (cool summer nights) and any other fun/funny onsies I see and want to buy.

    0-3 Mos Clothes (Sept-Nov):
5 pack white onsie (have), 3 pack long sleeve white onsie (have), plenty of socks (have 9 pairs), 4ish footed pj's, 4ish sleep sacks, 2 sleeveless sleep sacks, couple of warmer one pieces, fun/funny onsies, 2 or so cute complete outfits, 2 to 3 cotton pants.

    3-6 Mos Clothes (Nov- Jan)
3 pack longsleeve onsie, 5 pack short sleeve onsies, couple of pant/sweatshirt sets (2ish), other fun onsies, 4ish footed pj's, 2 sleep sacks.

This is just what I plan to start with. I know I will probably end up with more but this is my minimum to feel prepared. I will wait to buy anything like a coat or snowsuit until I know better babies size and growth so I make sure it fits! Also hoping for hand-me-downs too!

@Mrs Bicycle: So happy you're back and baby is doing well!

@greenebee: I have been thinking about clothes. I'm not going to bother with shoes b/c they are purely decorative at that age, but I'm not sure about socks. It's pretty hot in the summer where we live. One thing I read is that it's good to have t-shirts that snap open in the beginning (as opposed to only having onesies) until baby's cord stump falls off.

@JamieLee: Ahh! you're getting more snow? We finally got spring to come and now we're in this ridiculous 4 day period of 80+ degree weather, lol.

@Mrs Bicycle: that IS a great deal! I've heard good things about the SkipHop bags, too!

Honestly, I think I'm just going to wing it with clothes. I've registered for some t-shirts and onesies, but I make room for the fact that I have NO IDEA what I'll need and I'll be running out to the store a lot. Fortunately, target and BBB are 5 minutes away!

@Mrs D: you are sooooo organized!! I'm so happy you are in this group. You just make all the lists for me!

@Grace: I'm not sure how much of a plan it is, lol. And as much as I want to get out of the house, the downfall might be that I'm too chicken to leave. Crap, this is already backfiring. Maybe I'll make DH go...

@.twist.: Not hogging at all! I really appreciate it, and it’s fun to see everyone’s updates!

@msmay: I also bought the side snap shirts in newborn size for DS to wear until the cord stump falls off thanks to the recommendation around the hive. Carter’s is within walking distance of our house, and they always have a ton of stuff on Clearance so we’re putting off on buying more clothes until we have a better idea of what size DS will be at that current time since kids can be smaller or larger than the stated sizes. Plus, hubby is the shopper out of us two so I'm sure he'll be more than happy to go shop for DS. =)

@Mrs D: hahahaha! Checklists? What are those??? Yea, right!! I’m all about check lists. There’s just something satisfying about crossing things off as their completed. Plus, it’s a sanity saver when it comes to organization!!

Has anyone had any major stomach issues lately? I'm so nauseated today, and I'm having shooting pains in my upper stomach area, like closer to my rib cage. I've also been puking and had some...other...bathroom issues. I called my doctor's office but they haven't called me back yet. I'm afraid I've developed lactose intolerance...my dad has it and I've heard it can develop during pregnancy. I started feeling sick right after lunch, which was Mac and cheese...I'm going to give up on dairy for the next few days and see how it goes.

@JamieLee: Oh no!! I heard of ladies that were lactose intolerant before become non-lactose intolerant, but not the other way around. That would suck - no ice cream, milk, or cheese?! Noooooo!

I only feel sick when I've eaten too much or too fast and really have to throw up to ease the pressure. =\

What have you ladies been craving lately? I just realized I've been craving chocolate this week after not having ANY cravings since the start of the 2nd trimester. So weird!

@JamieLee: Yes, last night my stomach was unbearable! It started as sharp stabbing pains in the upper part of my stomach, then turned into an all around ache. There's a bug going around my son's classroom though, so the germa-a-phobe in me may have talked me into feeling that way.

Anyways my cure all for an upset stomach is a couple shots of dill pickle juice and/or 2tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a mug of hot water. You can add a tsp of honey to make it more bearable, it's pretty strong.
I use to drink it 3 times a day, I was able to give up coffee and coke, I swear it helped me lose weight and stay healthy, acv has many proven abilities It really helped last night, I was able to lay down and go to sleep.

@JamieLee: a little bit. Not with nausea/vomiting but I finally started getting the uncontrollable gas *cringes with embarrassment* along with constipation, which I surprisingly did not have an issue with at all in the 1st tri. Sorry your tummy's upset! Hopefully it's just a fluke and you won't have to give up dairy- feel better soon!
