@Mrs Bicycle: BTW I did a google search this morning and found out the need for a full bladder - it helps the u/s picture be transmitted better. I guess u/s "rays" or "data" is best collected through water rather than tissue/empty space. So having a full bladder gives the tech a "water base" to transmit through. Made perfect sense once I read it!

@redsmarties: @delight: @skipper2010: @Alivoo01: @StrawberryBee: Thanks ladies - I had fun! I had my mom with me and she helped me stay "focused" on practical stuff. I am going back this afternoon to get a 5 pack of SS newborn onesies and 4 pack of LS newborn onesies. Thats it for newborn clothes for me. My total spent will be about $75 for all newborn clothes. I plan to hold off on any 0-3 month stuff (other than the white basics I already have) until after the shower when "fall" stuff starts to come in!

@Grace: I hope and pray this every day. Both techs (different ladies) have made many comments "oh she is just a peaceful little sleeper in there" - please god let this mean she'll be an easy baby!!!!

@.twist.: I also secretly love the orange drink from McDonalds! If that's how it tastes, I'll be alright with it!

I asked my office if I should drink any water before my anatomy scan, and they said no. They used to recommend that, but their machines are better now, so it's not necessary. I also have to leave a urine sample at every appointment after 20 weeks for the protein test, so I actually went right before my ultrasound.

I went this weekend to a mom-to-mom sale and picked up some cute barely used clothes in all different sizes (got a lot of 12 month shorts for next summer for super cheap!) and our organic Naturpedic mattress for $125. Its $369 new, so I thought that was a great deal. I also hit up the Baby Gap clearance rack and got a couple cute things. All in all, I spent (not counting the mattress) less than 50 bucks and got a whole reusable shopping bag FULL of clothes. And it's all stuff I actually like, so I'm cool with it being used. We're super broke right now, so I'm trying to do this all as economically as possible. I'll post some pictures later, but my favorite thing was this from Baby Gap for $5:

Is it okay to ask people not to buy you anything in newborn size?? My sister gave me my first baby gift yesterday, a 5-pack of really cute newborn onesies. I'm thinking though, one more of those and I'll be set as far as newborn clothes since the baby will only wear them for a couple of weeks. Maybe I should add some clothes to my registry (there are none on there now) in bigger sizes so people get the hint??

Like maybe include something in the note to guests at the top of my registry about clothing sizes? Or is that too bossy?

Like "We have already been blessed with so many adorable clothing items in newborn size, so please think big if clothes are your thing!"

@Mrs Bicycle: good luck today! I had to drink 32 oz of water but I did 8oz of that orange juice. After a few minutes she let me empty my bladder part way. Baby didn't cooperate so I got to empty it all after that.

@Modern Daisy: if you get some more NB can you just exchange for bigger sizes? Most stores should let you! I'd definitely add some bigger sizes to registry though as well!

@Modern Daisy: I am not sharing the gender until the shower to attempt to cut the amount of clothing I get in general! I really need the other stuff (practical) before I need clothing!!!

@delight: Exchanging for bigger sizes will be a huge pain in our rears because we're limited as to what stores we have access to in NYC. Getting our car and driving to the actual store in NJ will be an all-day event and we won't want to do that for $15 worth of clothes.

@Mrs D: I am doing the exact same thing!! I continue to be bombarded by questions about the gender and I think some people are getting suspicious. My coworkers husband actually called us out on finding out and keeping it a secret - totally random! But we are sticking to our guns because I just don't want piles of clothes when we REALLY NEED the essentials. Our current story when people ask is that we are in fact finding out, but don't know yet and probably won't know until our next appointment which is about a month away. When they pry further I say taht the Dr. had a guess at our anatomy scan but we chose not to find out since he wasn't 100% sure.

@Modern Daisy: I'm worried we won't have enough! I know they are only in them for a few weeks but my MIL told me that you'll often have to change them about 3 - 4 times a day?! She said they make huge messes and you need a lot of little onsies or else you'll be doing laundry every few hours! It totally worried me and now I'm trying to stock up, while not going crazy at the same time.

  10. Modern Daisy

    grapefruit / 4187 posts

@.twist.: Yes, we will definitely need a stash, but I am anticipating that our 'stash' will end up being a closet full of newborn sized clothes after our showers. Meanwhile it's super easy to just go online and order a pack of onesies with amazon prime 2 day free shipping if we find that we didn't buy enough. So ultimately I'm really not worried about having enough clothes, esp when they are the easiest and cheapest items to acquire.

  11. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Modern Daisy: Ah yea, I don't have the fancy amazon shipping so going out to an actual store might be intimidating in those first few weeks? But yes, I see what you're saying. Hopefully there are some forward thinking people going to your shower and they'll buy some 0-3 or 3-6 month stuff!

@Alivoo01: MyHabit is having Danzo diaper bags today at 11 our time. Not sure which styles, but they also have 20% off today with code "TAXBREAK" So you could get a great deal + 20% off!! I don't remember if you already have a diaper bag, but just wanted to let you know.

I am planning to catch up with everyone else over my lunch break!

  13. JamieLee

    clementine / 930 posts

@Mrs D: We were going to do this, but certain people *ahem* MIL and SIL *ahem* are unreliable when it comes to secrets, so there's no way it would have stayed quiet.

@Modern Daisy: I'm planning to just return a lot. People are so bad at paying attention to sizes and seasons...like, we won't need summer clothes in size 6-9 months, but I'm sure we'll get some. And we've already gotten some winter clothes in newborn sizes. I think you could put a note, but so many people won't pay attention to it. I'm having the same dilemma with diapers. We're going to do cloth, so I don't want to get a bunch of industrial size packs of disposables, but I don't want to seem pushy with a note...

@.twist.: my friend confirmed this. She changed her baby's clothes probably every time she changed her diaper. EBF poo is apparently notorious for blowouts, and she want through TONS of clothes. On a side note, she swears by Shout Free for getting poo stains out.

@Mrs D: So cute! I went into Carter's and had to walk out because I was in serious danger of buying up the store.

Speaking of clothes, for those of you in Northern US or Canada, are you mainly getting long sleeved stuff for newbornish clothes? I "accidently" bought some short sleeves onesies (with pictures on them), before it occurred to be that baby might be too cold.

@twist: @JamieLee: I secretly love the McD drink too. Haven't had it since i was a kid.

@Modern Daisy: I wouldn't phrase it as "don't get me...", but rather "I really need some of the bigger sizes" and try to get that word spread around. I find people respond better to direction than an outright ban (for lack of a better word).

Haha - you could tease them for their nosyness and tell them that you are keeping it a secret just to drive them craaaaaaaaazy!

  15. .twist.

    pineapple / 12802 posts

@Grace: I've gotten quite a few short sleeved and no legged onsies. Our summers can get pretty warm. I have a few longer sleeves/legged ones...

This summer (in Calgary) is supposed to be super hot so I'm hoping I can get away with the short sleeved version of things. I guess if he gets cold I can put him in a blanket or little sweater or something? I have no idea.

  16. JamieLee

    clementine / 930 posts

@Grace: We live in northern Michigan (right at the 45th parallel, if that helps) and I'm planning to get a mix. August is usually hot here, and September can be a bit of a crap shoot really. It can be hot all the way through to October, or it can start getting to be fallish weather sooner. So I figure it's better to be prepared. I'll probably also get some little jackets or zip up sweaters/sweatshirts to make the short sleeve stuff workable.

  17. Modern Daisy

    grapefruit / 4187 posts

@JamieLee: Yes I agree, I feel like most people won't pay attention to the note. If anything it might seem a little too bossy. In the meanwhile, I'm actually adding clothing items to my registry and marking them as purchased so hopefully people get the hint!

@Grace: That's a really good point! Don't want to sound rude. I was also thinking we could ask the shower hosts to spread the word, but only if people ask. We could ask them to say something like "Well they already have a ton of newborn clothes, so if you want to buy them an outfit definitely go for a bigger size"

  18. Mrs D

@lawbee11: & @Alivoo01: FWIW I LOVE my Danzo bag! Its so nice a roomy! May be a little big for those who are not used to carrying bigger purses but I just love it. I like that I'll have the option to use DH's Diaper Dude for smaller trips but mine could definitely hold enough stuff for all day!

@Modern Daisy: I think for the most part people know not to get a lot in newborn sizes so maybe you won't even have to worry. Also you never know how long your baby will be in them for. A friend of mine gave birth to a little peanut, and was actually using NB sizes for A LOT longer than she anticipated. I'm sure it will all work out.

@Grace: I don't think short sleeve onesies are a bad thing to have, even if it's cold. You could always throw a cute little baby sweatshirt over them.

So what are people experiencing for symptoms nowadays? My feet are starting to get swollen if I've been on them all day. Not looking forward to cankles in the summer months. lol Overall I'm feeling pretty good though so I'm grateful for that. Trying to enjoy the rest of the second trimester before I get huge.

  21. JamieLee

    clementine / 930 posts

@Modern Daisy: You could always ask your hostesses to spread the word as well. That's what I'm hoping will happen if I tell enough people about my cloth diapering intentions!

@lawbee11: Thanks for the tip on MyHabit. I *just* finished our taxes and we're getting a little bit more than we were anticipating, so I ordered the Danzo Slate Hobo bag! So excited! Got it for $127. I did call DH first, and he said to do it!

@Mrs D: I'm glad to hear you like yours. I was going to get a Petunia Pickle Bottom, but I read so many good things about the Danzo. I am used to huge purses, so I think this will be perfect for me. I like the patterns and colors of the PPB bags, but the Slate will go with so much more. I'm thinking about looking into a Diaper Dude bag for DH though. Does your DH like his?

@skipper2010: I'm still having sinus pain and pressure, which causes headaches and ear and neck pain. It's quite annoying, as I feel like I've had a cold for a month! I have cankles anyways (sadly) so I'm hoping they don't get much bigger. I've sprained my ankles so many times, they are not pretty...and I have giant calves, so it is what it is. Otherwise, I'm feeling pretty good. I'm still lower, weight wise, than when I found out I was preggers, which my doctor says is a good thing since I was overweight to begin with. I'm hoping I can keep that up, and then magically lose 20 pounds when baby is born! Wishful thinking, I'm sure...

@JessKas: I am anxiously awaiting my first stranger comment! Whenever I am standing in line somewhere I always push out and place my hand on my belly, but still nada. Hopefully soon! I have noticed some white flaky stuff on my nipples a couple of times. I assume it's colostrum. It's kinda gross!

@StrawberryBee: OMG that tutu is ridic. Is it from Etsy?? I am ordering mine from Etsy, and I think it looks very similar to that one. I can't wait to get it!! Oh, and I love your crib

@delight: 30 stitches?! Yowza! That doesn't sound pleasant.

@Grace: Cute fabric choices! Love all the colors!

@Mrs D: Ahhh look at those adorable girly clothes! I keep trying to branch out and buy things that aren't pink, but I am having a tough time.

@Mrs Bicycle: Good luck at your anatomy scan!! Can't wait to hear what team you'll be joining!! They let me empty my bladder for mine.

@.twist.: OMG I love the orange drink from McDonald's. I hope it really does taste like that!

@skipper2010: As far as symptoms go, I don't have many. Definitely frequent urination--I am up to pee 1-2 times/night. I am also still really emotional. I cried yesterday because I burned my toast!

@JamieLee: Yay! Glad you got the bag--and what a great deal! Hope you love it!

I ordered another romper from Baby Gap yesterday. I have a problem! We also ordered our crib sheets and changing pad cover. Here is a picture of the pattern. The walls are gray, so we'll have coral and white accents. I am still trying to find some cute prints for the walls, too!

oh, eff it. Just got an email from our HR department that someone in MY WING was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis over the weekend. And I have a good feeling I know who it was, because someone from my department was the one helping her in the bathroom when she fainted.

Crap. Going to mention this to the dr today and see if there's anything I should be doing other than waiting out the 3-7 day incubation period. My sister was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis about seven years ago and thankfully survived without any loss of function due to a fast-acting teacher (she was on a trip through her music program at school and collapsed in the hotel bathroom).

(keeping my mind off of bacterial meningitis while waiting to leave for my appointment)

@JamieLee: what a great deal, especially on the mattress! That bear outfit is ridiculously cute.

@.twist.: I go back and forth on how many clothes to get and in what size/for what season. There are some days when I think "oh, we may have a large baby and not even use a lot of the newborn size!" and then other times when I think "we may have a small baby and still be in 9 mo. clothes by the time hot weather hits!" And supposedly some brands size differently than others.

I'm keeping tags on everything, not washing much before she gets here. I've heard that Carter's accepts returns back at any time with tags (and receipt?) and there's one 7 minutes from my house, so I'm not too concerned about having to exchange or get store credit (or pick up more of something, if necessary).

@lawbee11: yep, it's from Etsy! this seller:

@lawbee11: love that fabric! Coral was going to be one of my colors if LO turned out to be a girl.

@StrawberryBee: OMG! That's awful! I would definitely talk to your doctor. My dads cousin had the bacterial meningitis and she's alive, but paralyzed from the waist down. She works in healthcare though so it was a direct exposure. I've read that unless you are sharing things like drinking glasses or utensils or making out with the infected person, the chance of getting it is low. Maybe you can take a prophylaxis antibiotic. This is why I hate when people come to work when they aren't feeling well...

Thanks for the clothes imput. I haven't bought too much yet, so it sounds like I'm in the clear.

@skipper2010: Hardly any symptoms right now. In the first trimester, I couldn't understand why people LOVED being pregnant. But now, the only symptoms I have is slight constipation, a slightly congested nose, easily out of breath and today, I have tight socks (whether that's swollen ankles, or bad socks, I'm not sure yet). Nothing really to complain about.

@JamieLee: Haha- I'm still below pre-pregger weight too (which my dr also said is fine because I am overweight) and I totally keep dreaming of magically losing 20 lbs when baby is born. I'm sure it won't last though. Everyone I know gained 10 extra pounds at the end, regardless of whether they were eating well or not.

@StrawberryBee: Is bacterial menengitis very contagious? If it's not someone you work with all the time, I imagine you are fine.

@.twist.: Are you talking about the Hi-C orange drink?! If so, I’m a fan!

@lawbee11: Thanks for the heads up! I haven’t purchased my bag yet, and am still on the hunt for one!
Love that pattern y’all picked out!!!

@skipper2010: It’s starting to get pretty warm in North Texas so my rings are already getting a lil snug. I’m already dreading the day I won’t be able to wear them anymore… When allergies hit me, I feel like I’m getting the cold instead of just allergies. Darn weakened immune system. Otherwise, I’ve been loving my symptom free pregnancy while watching my belly grow! I do get nervous when I don’t feel DS moving around though… And the only comfortable position I find myself sleeping in is on my back – d’oh!

@StrawberryBee: Bacterial meningitis?! Oh no!!! Definitely mention it to the doctor, and I’m hoping the other person just got the start of it so no one else caught it!

@StrawberryBee: I'm sure you are fine - I think that has to be transmitted though like fluids (i.e. Saliva) so unless you share drinks with people regularly I'd not panic too much! But definitely still worth a mention to the doc!

Totally caving ladies - I told DH last night that I wanted to hire a cleaning lady when I go back to work after LO comes...is that terrible? Hoping to find someone for about $75/bi weekly. We can swing the expense...I truthfully just think I want the extra time with LO as opposed to spiffing the house top to bottom...he better not fight me on this too much or I will be forced to counter with "well its really just you cutting the expense of one golf round per month" - nail his ass!

  31. Grace

@Alivoo01: No kidding about the heat. We were running around Home Depot yesterday and I was sweating my butt off and suddenly my hands swelled up so badly I had to use soap and water and lotion to get my rings off they hurt so much! Where did this heat come from? It was cold two days ago and now it is getting warm. I was hoping to avoid the heat for as far into this pregnancy as possible!

@Mrs Hedgehog: I KNOW!! The past two weeks, and this week also, it's been in the upper 70's/80's but one day a week, it dips in to the 50's. What the heck!? Our good friends just moved there and most of my extended family is in Dallas - I am thinking about trying to talk DH into a March/April trip to Dallas next year with the LO in tow! @JamieLee: @Grace: @Alivoo01: this OB was no help, so I'm on hold with my primary right now. We have a water cooler that people share (some people shove their water bottles they've been drinking out of right up against the spigot to refill...I should probably stop using it!), and bins of plasticware and plates.

Had to leave a message, so hopefully they call me back soon.

Well, in baby news the appointment went well! Good heartrate (in the 150s), measuring well. She told me to take my glucose test in two weeks but I have to schedule it directly at the lab (she said that they no longer give us the drink in advance because it wasn't working out right, so now they make you drink it and you sit there for an hour and then they test you). Ha, should I schedule it before the 3D ultrasound? Baby be hoppin' then!

Next appointment is May 14th, and then after that I go to every two weeks (eep!). I asked about pertussis/whooping cough vaccination and she said that usually happens at the next appointment, at least for the mom. Dad can hold off until closer to due date.

You guys - this stuff in Boston is so crazy...the block where the bombs went off I literally walked down every day on my way to work - its so sad seeing it look like a scene from a war movie...

@Mrs D: I can't stop watching the coverage. It's horrifying. The spirit of a race is supposed to be about accomplishment, endurance, and celebration, the ultimate consummation of the tears, sweat, and pain that these runners go through to get to that finish line. It makes me so angry that that was taken from them. When I heard that runners were running to local hospitals to give blood, I just started crying. I don't know if its the pregnancy hormones, or just the display of the good people in this world, but it got to me.
