@StrawberryBee: My DH said the same thing about our dog. He was also under the impression that unless I was in labor, it would be totally fine for him to attend his teams football practices. Ummm, no, my friend. You're not going to be leaving me in the hospital for middle school football camp. Once we talked about it, he agreed, but as if we even needed to have the conversation about it.
@skipper2010: I'm 33 weeks. I have certainly been resting more and drinking tons of water to keep it fom happening again.
@lawbee11: I've been wondering about the hiccups too. I think I've felt them as little pulses, but they don't last very long. Maybe 5 minutes. I've heard of them lasting much longer.
nectarine / 2466 posts
@lawbee11: that's what my babes hiccups feel like, a rhythmic pulse. They're really close together for the most part. Sometimes they only last for like 10 mins and other times I've felt them for like half hour or more.
nectarine / 2220 posts
@lawbee11: mine gets them all the time. Probably 3-5 second intervals. I wasn't sure that's what they were at first and thought maybe baby was just a really rythmic kicker but then I saw a 2 day old in my obs office with them and it was exactly the same jerking movement of her whole body that I seemed to be feeling.

@Grace: So glad that you were able to get answers and meet your OB! What a relief :).
@lawbee11: hopefully this doesn't come across as creepy, but you are a very pretty lady (pregnant or otherwise), so I'm sure your photos will turn out great!
@skipper2010: @Modern Daisy: yes, my sleeping shirts are getting short and tight! I've been debating breaking out the nursing tanks.
@JennyG: lol, gotta love it. My DH just isn't good at planning things out/thinking things through sometimes.
nectarine / 2220 posts
@Modern Daisy: I'm also just trying to get through with what I have. My office attire is getting a little snug but I just can't justify buying stuff I'll only wear until I go on mat leave in three weeks. So, questionable outfits it is for now. I just stroll in like "I DARE you to say anything about dress code" when I'm wearing flip flops with dress pants and a t shirt.

Oh my goodness, I need to catch up!
For starts, I had one of the worst possible mornings ever! Aside from my normal pee breaks, I was awake from about 2am to 4am. I am starting to really feel the aches and pains. I woke up and my feet hurt, immediately, can't even sleep that off. I'm swollen everywhere. I have a blocked tear duct and I look like a total fool today. I forgot to buy a transit pass and missed my normal train. Walking to work took about 15 minutes when it should only take 5 and by the time I got to work I was almost in tears because my feet hurt so bad. My fingers hurt, which I imagine is from the swelling...? When I got to work my whole office was rearranged because they were doing work on the vents or something over the weekend. I was immediately bombarded by my boss and the woman who is taking over for me while I'm gone. I didn't even have time to put my lunch away they were in my office that quick. Not to mention I was 25 minutes late. As SOON as they left my office I may have totally burst into tears.
My day has gotten a little better but I dread the next few mornings. Luckily my boss has been sooooo understanding and is giving me Friday off and I'm taking a holiday day on Monday.
I don't know if any of you remember that we were offered a "new, barely used, crib" from one of my husbands cousins? Well.... when people say this, don't listen to them until you see the "new, barely used" condition. The crib is not new, it was new to her maybe, but definitely not new. In fact, it's so not new that there is a HUGE crack in the base of the crib (the board the mattress lays on), right in the corner, through the screw that secures into the crib post. It's been "fixed" with three large screws that go right through the support beam under the base. I'm freaking out because I feel bad that she thought of us and now I just don't know if I feel comfortable using this crib! Not to mention it was cooooovered in dry, old, milk. Which I had to clean. Thoughts ladies?
Besides my complete novel of a rant, and I really am sorry for the book! I am actually happy because the baby room is painted and ready to be furnished, which I'm partially doing (hopefully!) Wednesday evening.
Seeeeeeeee:

@Alivoo01: No July 4th plans. Our Canada day was just this past weekend and the July 4th weekend is the start of our yearly, world famous, rodeo!
The Stampede! Although, this year I'm not looking forward to it because of transit issues and how hot and crammed the trains get.
@JennyG: OMG! Your experience in Boston sounds totally freaky! I've been getting mild cramps and that was enough to make me pack our hospital bags. Can't imagine what you felt!! Glad you're feeling better and definitely take it easy!
@Modern Daisy: I am feeling huge. Swollen and huge. I have gained about 30lbs and about 15 - 20 of it came within the last few weeks. I'm sooooo upset about it. lol. It's only a little over the norm, but I'm upset because of how much pain I'm in.
@Sapphiresun: That is too funny about your husbands one job. I would be totally annoyed too if DH forgot to make sure we had gas! LOL. I feel like we *always* have to get gas when he drives!
@StrawberryBee: I would NOT be cool with DH bringing the step kids to the hospital, for all the reasons you listed and they are just not calm kids and I would be trying to focus on birth AND worrying about what they're getting into. My due date is a wednesday and I REALLY hope this little guy keeps his birth in the middle of the week so I don't have to worry about it. Otherwise, I think I will ask my MIL to take them.
@Mrs D: Oh bummer about your weekend with your dad. It's too bad your sis can't get past all this and just be there for him. I imagine he's totally bummed not to be able to see you all there and that it caused any issues in the first place. My hormones are definitely getting to me as well. I feel like a serious crazy person sometimes!!! ALSO, I LOVE your nursery, SO pretty
@lawbee11: I feel a lot of baby hiccups and they're exactly how you describe them!
Grace: Once we took the tarp out of the room I totally fell in love with the colour!
SO happy you finally got to see your OB and that you like her! What a HUGE relief lifted off your shoulders I bet. I still can't believe you had to wait this long.
@babymats: how you feeling? Any better?
@Jamielee: I totally hear you on the weight gain. At my last appointment I had gained 5lbs in 2 weeks. I was not a happy camper about it and am totally hoping this week is better. However, I'm not holding my breath because I feel (and feel like I can SEE) the weight gain this time.
@JessKas: I have been living in flip flops. The weather better stay nice because I have nothing else that fits. I'm also a little excited about labour. Just to meet him. I flip flop between excited and nervous.
Delight: I have noticed the opposite! He seems to have slowed down a lot. Or maybe just... less spazz attacks and more confined movements? haha
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@lawbee11: I notice hiccups most at night when I'm trying to get to sleep and they are really fast and evenly spaced. I figure they can't be kicks, unless LO has really good rhythm!
@Modern Daisy: I feel huge! Especially after I've eaten too much and Baby is kicking like crazy. I keep telling DH that the baby is trying to escape out the front of my stomach, 'cause there's no room. And I REFUSE to buy more clothes. I'm resigning myself to looking a little sloppy.
@.twist.: Oh, that is a bad morning. Especially when you're tired - it just makes every little thing that much worse. I hope your cry was cathartic. As for the crib, I think you should trust your gut. If you aren't comfortable with it, then don't use it. And I agree - really nice paint colour!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
@.twist.: Ohh, I'm sorry you had such an awful morning! My day was hormonal and crappy - full of a co-worker saying some brutal things (basically, the reason I need to go for an ultrasound/the reason for my growth spurt is because I buy a chocolate bar at the pharmacy once a week or so. Um..I've gained 15 lbs this pregnancy, jerk. Thanks for being sympathetic).
@lawbee11: hiccups are hilarious! I would say mine gets them almost twice a day. So far, I haven't noticed any real pattern, but its a pretty neat reminder she's in there! Can't wait to see how she hiccups on the outside.
@Modern Daisy: I'm totally getting creative with outfits. I figure, as long as I've got dress pants on the bottom, and SOMETHING covering my boobs/belly, I'm good to go. I save my nicer, better-fitting tops for days I know the manager will be in the office.
Just had a meeting with our doula - I'm pretty excited to be working with her. Just the fact that she came over to our house and chatted for an hour about our plans, hopes, concerns, everything really reassured me that we made the right choice by hiring her.

First of all I'm up at the cottage and Internet connection is a bit spotty so It's hard to catch up with the past couple of days, I'll try when I get home!
@lawbee11: that's what my baby's hiccups are like. Rhythmic pulse every few secs and down low. Sometimes babe squirms around a bit at the same time and they last about 5 mins or so. They've been happening 2-3 times a day lately!
@.twist.: no offence but that crib sounds a bit sketchy. Especially since its a bit broken. I wouldn't want it. If you don't use it will they ever know?
@MrsD: I love your nursery, looks beautiful!
@Modern Daisy: I'm feeling huge too. I had to go out and buy a couple t shirts that are bigger. The stores totally lied to me when I bought my clothes at 14 weeks and they said I could wear them til the end
luckily for me, I am done work so I don't really have to have too much to wear. I might be wearing pretty much the same thing every day until I deliver. I've put on most of my weight in the last few weeks and I can feel it. Everything just feels like such an effort these days.
@redsmarties: I think it's really awesome that you are hiring a doula. I hope you tell us all about your doula experience after the birth.
nectarine / 2220 posts
@redsmarties: What a cow! I'm thinking about a doula, but think I might be behind on even the possibility of finding one that's available at this point. I called our maternity ward about registration/tours and they pretty much told me that it's not an option, and with DH possibly being stuck at work and all our family so far away, I kind of wish I might have thought of it sooner, since it just feels like it's going to be me doing some big unknown thing by myself at this point.

@.twist.: Yay - the nursery is looking great! I love the color!
So - I just talked to my friend who gave me a list of what she got provided to her at the hospital...I used this to cut back on my lists of "to buy" for my recovery:
-pain meds (she got Ty 800 + codeine and Ibuprofen 800)
-butt spray
-huge over night pads/liners
-tucks witch hazel pads
-peri bottle
I was happy to chop my list in half of crap I need to buy for my recovery!
I added everything I could to my Target registry (including some items from lawbee's BF board yesterday) so I can maybe get 10% off!
Also - my friend sent me an article recently about J&J baby products...not trying to scare anyone just sharing.
http://www.essortment.com/naturally-inducing-labor-benefits-drawbacks-evening-primrose-51100.html
I definitely feel there is some truth to the "well I was raised on J&J products so how bad can they be?" but still I think what DH and I will do is use a mixture of J&J stuff with the organic stuff. If you read the article it indicates that they will be focusing on fixing the baby products first. My friend recommended Burts Bee's or California Baby as alternative products. I plan to buy a mixture and just try not to use the J&J stuff for everything every day.
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
@Mrs D: I saw some articles like that about the J&J products. Though I don't usually buy into all of the hype surrounding things like that, I was hoping to not be gifted any baby products, because I wanted to use the Burt's Bees stuff anyway. This article just makes it easier to confirm my decision.
Also - that's a great list of stuff from the hospital! I'm (hopefully) getting early discharge because I'm with the midwives (4 hours post-birth), so I won't make it to the post-natal floor, which means I'll miss out on the free stuff. Bought Tucks, witch hazel, and massive pads this week....and felt totally mortified going through the checkout.

@Mrs D: I'm confused. The link goes to Evening Primrose Oil, not J & J products.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
Sorry ladies...I pasted the wrong article:
http://m.naturalnews.com/news/036906_Johnson_&_formaldehyde_bacteria.html
@Grace: See above - sorry for the confusion!!!
Also - was talking with my mom on the way to work. She wasn't sure if its still a requirement or not but she said when she had us girls you had to have a bowel movement before you could leave the hospital (the Colace on my initial list a few pages back is a stool softener to help) so she recommends warm prune juice...said it works like a charm. I'll be adding it to my list...

@.twist.: oh, the nursery looks so pretty already! I love that kind of carpet. Sorry to hear you had such a rough morning.
I ditto not using the crib if you don't feel comfortable with it. It's a pretty important piece of safety equipment, so it has to feel right to you.
Yeah, I don't think that kids + waiting in hospitals for hours and hours is a good mix at all.
I had a dream last night that she was pushing hands and feet against my belly and you could see the individual fingers (like, almost transparent skin on my belly?). Very odd!
@Sapphiresun: have you tried http://doulamatch.net/ ? You never know! And wow, that's the first I've heard of a maternity ward not offering tours. If it makes you feel any better, my coworker completely winged it (didn't take birthing classes or a tour) and she made out fine. She even preferred it that way; she figured that they'd tell her what she needed to know when the time came. Do you have a way to get to the hospital? I would ask them if you come after hours, if there are any entrances you should use (at our hospital, the only way to get in is through emergency if you arrive after hours, but you just tell them that you're there for L&D and continue on through).
@Mrs D: Yeah, I've seen that J&J article (even if it was from a year ago) and am boycotting all of their products as a result. My problem is that I don't like the scents of a lot of the other baby products (the most variety is at target, and sometimes I can sniff the bottles if they aren't sealed ;)). My DH is fairly sensitive to products, so I'm not sure if that will carry over to LO. My SIL gave me a list of products she uses with her LO, who is super sensitive (has an allergist and everything!). For his body she uses Dove sensitive bar soap; for his face and hair she uses this, which she says lasts forever: https://www.originalsprout.com/babies/hair-body-babywash .
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@Mrs D: Thanks! I'm not very worried about it. You have to remember that method of ingestion and dose are very important. Most things we use topically, will cause harm if you eat it/snort it/get it into the bloodstream. What I am excited to see is that they are going to phase out triclosan, which is an antibacterial compound (too many antibacterial soaps and stuff contribute to bacterial resistance and superbugs).

@Grace: @delight: @StrawberryBee: Thanks for the crib thoughts ladies. I really don't think I'm going to use it. I kept asking DH if I was being unreasonable or over reacting and he's not really great at answering those types of questions! hahaha I think I'm going to go get a new crib.
@redsmarties: Sorry to hear you had a crappy morning as well!! What is WITH people and not keeping their mouths shut!? Seriously, that is so rude of them. If they knew how I ate at LEAST a bowl of ice cream a day they wouldn't bug you about your weekly treat. hahaha
@Mrs D: I totally read the article a while ago too! It made me take off all J&J products and I ended up going with a few Aveeno ones. I'll try them out and then maybe go to organic if I don't like them.
nectarine / 2530 posts
@.twist.: Pretty sure Aveeno is owned by J&J ;). You just can't win!
What I don't like (if sources are to be believed) is that these ingredients were not in their products released in other countries (the UK, for instance): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2056027/Johnsons-baby-shampoo-Consumers-urged-boycott-cancer-risk-product-U-S-campaigners.html
Kinda makes me feel like they were able to save a few cents in the US/Canada/Australia/etc because our laws are too lax.
It's like dog food shopping -- I'm slightly crazy about ingredient lists on dog food; I probably focus on it more than the crap that I eat! You wouldn't believe how many brands I've switched to due to recalls (factory contamination, ingredient contamination, etc.). It probably doesn't really matter at the end of the day, but it still frustrates me.
After all, they can't put it on the internet if it isn't true ;).
pineapple / 12802 posts
@StrawberryBee: I actually had a feeling that they were. I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw it, but I swear I read something about them being "from the makers of J&J" or something. I'd already gotten gifts so I gave up. *sigh* At this point I kind of just feel like my baby will be ok. haha
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@StrawberryBee: I wouldn't be surprised if the ingredients were different in the UK. When they manufacture in different locations, they often have different suppliers for source ingredients (shipping costs, duties are different, etc). The EU might also have stricter regulations on what they can put into the products than the US.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@StrawberryBee: thanks for all the input...its great to have some many opinions on the topic for all the viewpoints. I am going to have a few different brands stashed as DH also has sensitivities I worry about carrying over to our little one!
@Grace: completely agree!
@.twist.: FYI - I was thinking about going the Aveeno route too and my girlfriend warned me that some babies have reactions to the oatmeal in the Aveeno products! Its still going to be one of the few I have on hand just to try out.
Also, J&J has a naturals brand that is good.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Mrs D: haha oh man. Seriously cannot win! I hope LO doesn't have sensitive skin. I don't think DH's skin knows what sensitive is, so hopefully LO takes after him!
nectarine / 2220 posts
@StrawberryBee: well, ideally dh will be able to start thinking about making his exit from work once i call to say im in early labour and will have time to get home to drive me but I guess worst case scenario, ambulance or taxi? They said you just go through emergency. My mom was five/three hours from first contraction to baby in hand with me and my sister (although I know that's not necessarily a guarantee of anything) so I'll try to give him as much notice as I can... But that's just life married to a cop that he my not be able to come and I just have to have a plan in place to be independent.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Sapphiresun: Oh my, does the thought of doing it all alone freak you out?
nectarine / 2220 posts
@.twist.: it didn't at first since in general I'm a pretty independent sick person and preferring to throw up alone when i have the flu or whatever was kind of my only reference point... I had heard about doulas but had a impression that was kind of a crunchy thing to have (no offence) and that I wouldn't want some random lady hanging out while I'm in labour but now that I kind of know how little information/support I've felt over this process from my doctor/hospital I'm getting a little nervous.
clementine / 930 posts
@StrawberryBee: that really bugs me! The laws are too lax in the US for stuff like this. I read this article and it made me angry: http://www.buzzfeed.com/ashleyperez/8-foods-we-eat-in-the-us-that-are-banned-in-other-countries
So what dog food do you use? We used to feed our guy Nutro but now we feed him Authority, which is just sold at Pet Smart.
I'm trying California Baby and Babyganics for bath products. I have super sensitive skin and bad eczema, so I'm concerned baby will too. I was gifted some J&J but don't plan to use it. Maybe I will donate it to a baby pantry if I can't return it.
@Sapphiresun: hope your hubby can leave work when the time comes! I worry about my hubs too. He works all over the county and usually drives to one location and gets into a company truck with another guy, so it's likely he wouldn't have his vehicle. I think he's going to start driving to the job site after a certain point so he can leave if need be, but its also hard to get ahold of him. He's supposed to get me the phone numbers of his bosses and coworkers so I have some back up in case he doesn't answer his phone or he's out of range. My mom's labors were fast too, seven and four hours, so I know it going to be important to go to the hospital quickly. Our house is 30 minutes from the hospital too...

@StrawberryBee: Aww thank you
Not creepy at all!
@.twist.: Your nursery looks amazing! Love the color! I agree with PP that I would not use that crib--I would be way too paranoid about it collapsing on top of the baby or something! Oh, and I totally registered for Aveeno stuff not realizing they're owned by J&J until I received the gift basket and looked on the back! I like that Aveeno is fragrance-free, so I'll probably just use what we have then switch to a different brand.
I am SO excited about the holiday tomorrow and being able to sleep in! DH and I are going to Ikea to get the rest of the nursery stuff we need, then I'll probably relax while he puts it together
nectarine / 2530 posts
@JamieLee: I currently use Acana (Chicken and Burbank Potato, though before that it was the Pacifica flavor until they had production issues and I was desperate to get anything ;)).
I used to feed Taste of the Wild and loved it until they had a recall because their food was manufactured at the same plant as some lower quality foods, and there was the possibility of salmonella contamination.
I fed Merrick to my puppy since Acana doesn't have a puppy formula.
I have also recommended Blue Buffalo to others as something readily available (at Petsmart, etc.) and pretty good quality.
http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/
There's a lot of disgusting things in super low quality pet food that turns my stomach (rendered animal proteins that basically means throwing everything not fit for human consumption in a big vat and reducing it to ground junk, and then pumping it full of fake flavors to make it palatable).
Here's an excerpt from a 1 star dog food:
"The third ingredient includes meat and bone meal, a dry “rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents”.
Meat and bone meal can have a lower digestibility than most other meat meals.
Scientists believe this decreased absorption may be due to the ingredient’s higher ash and lower essential amino acid content.
What’s worse, this particular item is anonymous. Since there’s no mention of a specific animal, this ingredient could come from almost anywhere: spoiled supermarket meat, roadkill, dead, diseased or dying livestock — even euthanized farm animals."
clementine / 930 posts
@StrawberryBee: thanks for that link! Our food is three stars, so I need to do a little research on some other options. That meat and bone meal thing really disturbs me, but luckily it's not an ingredient in either of the foods we've fed him. I need to find a food I can get at our local feed store or Petsmart as we live in a small town with not a lot of options.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@StrawberryBee: That is a very cool link! I buy my cat canine brand food, which is 4.5 star for dogs, I hope that it's in similar ratings for cats!
@lawbee11: You lucky girl! DH gets so frustrated at Ikea stuff and I end up having to put it all together myself. Which I actually don't mind, I find it calming. We will probably end up doing the same thing with the Aveeno products.
@Sapphiresun: haha I'm not crunchy at aaaall. I really hope that your DH is able to make it.
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
@Sapphiresun: I thought that a doula was the crunchiest thing ever - and thought it was pretty pointless. THEN I took a class taught by a doula. Might be worth calling around to see if anyone has a spot, if its something you are considering. BUT you'll be just fine, and hopefully DH will have a quiet day and be able to leave work right away.
@lawbee11: hooray for an Ikea day! I would have liked to use my holiday for shopping, but everything is closed Canada Day!
Ultrasound tomorrow at 35 weeks to check on growth. Hoping everything's fine...really just excited to see baby girl again!
nectarine / 2530 posts
@JamieLee: @.twist.: I grabbed that excerpt from the alpo page of the site. Authority actually sounded pretty good...I have a feeling the loss of the star was for the corn (not horrible, but filler and doesn't really get processed). I'm lucky in that we have a great local pet store near us that carries a lot of the unusual brands. Along with occasional 25% coupons :).
@redsmarties: yay for ultrasounds! I'm sure everything will be fine :).
clementine / 930 posts
@StrawberryBee: yeah, I saw the corn. The rest of the ingredients didn't seem too bad. He does well on it. His coat is very nice and shiny, and he isn't gassy. We had friends who fed their dogs the cheapest store brand kibble and they had the stinkiest gas! They pooed a lot too! Our guy doesn't seem to go that often. He has terrible breath though, but I'm thinking that's mostly our fault because we never brush his teeth...
@lawbee11: have fun at Ikea! I think I need to make a stop there next time we are in the Detroit area for some organizing stuff for the nursery.

Happy July 4th to our US ladies! Enjoy your holiday and hope some of you are making it an extra long weekend!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@redsmarties: How did your ultrasound go?? I hope it went well!
We had a very successful Ikea/nursery day yesterday. Although, Ikea had some of their towels on sale for $0.99 for 4th of July and people were sprinting through the store, acting a fool over some cheap bath towels. So that was a little annoying. But we got everything we needed, so it was all good. The nursery isn't 100% done, but we made significant progress yesterday. DH assembled the expedit and the rocker, we hung the book ledges and the gallery wall. We're so close to being done!
I had my 34w appointment this morning. Absolutely nothing exciting to report as it was a very short appointment, as usual. At least my OB is always on time and gets me in and out really quickly. I'll have the group B step test at my next appointment (36w), then I start weekly appointments after that. She said she doesn't like to do cervical checks until closer to my EDD unless I am showing signs of early labor, so I am guessing I won't get any until 38w or so.
Hope everyone had a great 4th of July!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
Just at the hospital now for a non-stress test, blood work and some scans. My feet ballooned up like mad, I have a headache and heart is racing. So...we're gonna get things checked out. No idea how the ultrasound went- have to wait until my midwife gives me the report. Come onnnn weekend!

@redsmarties: oh no!!! I sure hope its nothing serious! Take it easy mama and let us know what the results are.
@lawbee11: yay! I love successful ikea trips! Can't wait to see your nursery.

@lawbee11: My doctor won't start doing cervical checks until 38 weeks either, which I'm totally ok with. I know you can walk around being __cm dilated for weeks so I don't think it makes a big difference. One less thing up my hoo-ha for now. lol I just had the group b strep test at my 36 week appt and the dry swab was pretty damn uncomfortable.
@redsmarties: Oh no! Hope everything is ok. Maybe it's just the heat? Keep us posted!!
AFM I'm going to buy the remaining items off my registry today. Nursery is almost done with the exception of a few decorative touches. I think next I'll wash and sterilize all my bottles/paci's and put them away. Hospital bag isn't packed yet, but I did go out and buy everything for it. Meeting with the pediatrician next week. Time is really flying by now!
