@StrawberryBee: still a little early though. I'm 36w in a couple days but I guess that's pretty close to full term. I think if its the plug there is no way of knowing when labour will start anyways, it Could be a day, or a couple weeks. At least the hospital doesn't sound too concerned.

@Mrs Hedgehog: I tried to find some nursing tanks/bras in the large tata size I needed in a brick and mortar store but couldn't find any. I just ordered some and returned what didn't fit. My problem is a smaller band size with large cups. I hope you find something!

@StrawberryBee: "When I went over my birth plan last week I was told that I couldn't have skin to skin and delayed cord clamping because "gravity would cause blood to go out of the baby and into the placenta"."

A DOCTOR said that to you???

@delight: Glad you called! You are so close to term I wouldn't be surprised if you were next! It's good to hear they aren't worried though.

Gah! I can't believe we are all so close ladies! It feels like just yesterday we STARTED this board and pretty soon we are going to be snuggling our LO's along with .Twist.!

    pear / 1812 posts

    @JessKas: I missed that one!

@StrawberryBee: They actually said that to you?!?! Like... for real? How does that even kinda make sense? If boll and gravity worked like that wouldn't we be walking around with feet full of blood and heads as empty as that Dr.? Don't mean to sound mean but... really?

  6. StrawberryBee

@delight: my dr didn't seem too concerned if I went at 36 weeks. Then again, take that medical advice with a grain of salt.

@JessKas: @Mrs Hedgehog: yup! I was like...hope I don't end up with you on call when I deliver. And of course I was half naked at the time so couldn't exactly leap off the table and grab my phone to start pulling up medical journals.

I wish I could say this was an isolated incident, but I've had issues with doctors my entire life and I always end up with experiences similar to the above. The law of probability isn't working in my favor. It's hard to trust somebody's medical expertise when they feed you lines like that. This is her specialty, for crissake. Does she actually believe what she's saying? Or does she not feel like hanging around the three extra minutes to wait to clamp?

Her first response was actually "well, we clamp it first! It's not like blood goes spurting across the room!" because I had the gall to phrase it as 'delaying cutting the cord'. I wanted so badly to say no shit lady, I'm not an idiot.

It'll be interesting if the next two doctors I see also think that.

@Mrs Hedgehog: I think my target has nursing tanks. I know Buy Buy baby has them? Maybe go scope them out and then once you know the sizing order online to get better deals?

@delight: Glad you called and there was no need for worry! Those PJs are super cute...I have never gotten anything from Thyme...can you or someone comment on the how the sizing runs? I was a Medium pre-preg...pants generally 6-8...bra 34/36 c/d...I'm thinking Large to be safe!

DH and I had a final fight about the baptism. He declared that we absolutely must serve a meal to the people...UGH. Thankfully we decided to cut the invitees to family ONLY - which will be 15 adults and 4 children. I really didn't want to spend $400 on catering - so I think I have found that I can order large pasta catering from Maggianos, get three types of Pasta (one chicken, one beef and one veggie), buy some bagged salad, garlic bread and a cake from the grocery store and keep the tab under $200. We have a small fortune of redwine in the basement and I'll have someone bring some beer. I can stomach $200 - but not $400. Glad we found a compromise but I wanted to kill him at first!

@Mrs D: As far as Thyme sizing goes, they're pretty accurate/true to size. I was a 12/14 pre-preg, and I waver between a large and an XL (the more fitted the item, the more apt I am to go up to an XL). Large *might* be big on you, but pjs are always better bigger, aren't they?

This is my LAST Monday morning getting up for work. I can't even contain my excitement (except the fact that I'm literally dragging myself out the door). Come on, maternity leave!

  9. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@StrawberryBee: I don't like how the Target nursing tanks fit on me either!

And WTF on your OB's comment...

@Delight: I feel you on the fear! I'm 36+3 and DS is measuring small with low amniotic fluid. I'm currently on bed rest, but the OB did warn me to be ready for "go time" at any time in case they need to deliver me early... Sigh! I'm hoping DS will bake a lil longer.

@Mrs D: $200 is definitely better than $400!! That's a lot of baby goods there that need to be bought with that $200!

@redsmarties: Woohoo on the last day of work!!

  10. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@Mrs D: Good job on halving the budget!

@redsmarties: Yay for being so close to mat leave! I didn't have to leave a half hour early for work today because the person who's taking over my Monday morning duties wanted to try it on his own.

@Alivoo01: Oh good, it's not just me! I tried on an XL (or an XXL?) and it was still tight across my belly, and I was like WTF? In Motherhood Maternity I'm a L. And their bras NEVER fit.

I hate being in the position of having to second guess medical personnel. The reason I'm going to you is because you have years of knowledge that I will never possess. And yet I've had dentists tell me that they wanted to be a veterinarian and weren't good enough, so they had to become a dentist instead and they don't like it. I had to diagnose myself to the dermatologist. I got bounced like a ping pong back and forth when there was that bacterial meningitis outbreak at work and neither my OB (different doctor from the one above) or my GP wanted to tell me what to do. I've had much better luck overall with nurses than doctors.

Now every suggestion they make (or insist upon?) I'm going to wonder if it's truly in our best interest or in theirs. I am not good at being my own advocate, I just end up crying because I get myself so stressed out. So it's all on DH.

I'm not afraid of L&D, but I'm terrified of the hospital and doctors.

    pomelo / 5326 posts

@StrawberryBee: that is just so strange a doctor said that to you about cord clamping and skin to skin. Seriously. When I went over my birth plan the nurses were like "yes that's great, skin to skin is recommended for an hour." They were perfectly fine with delayed clamping too. I'm sorry you find it hard to advocate for yourself, can DH take on a bigger role doing this? I'm sorry you have had so many issues with docs.

@Mrs D: I run between a small and medium and got medium pjs. I usually buy medium in pjs because I like the drawstring pants a little big. The nursing tanks have bra straps so they are adjustable. I find pj pants always shrink a bit, so i go larger to be safe. It sounds like large would be best but medium would likely fit too. Do you have a thyme near by to try stuff on? Babies R Us has the ones I posted above on sale for $27 in the purple in all sizes so you could order from them. There are more "summery" ones in stock now, but I figure it'll be fall/winter before we know it.

@Mrs Hedgehog: it's crazy how close we are. I don't know if I am ready yet, there are things I still want to accomplish around here!! Thankfully both our parents are in town and DH has the summer off so I really am fine to have babe any time. I will say I am super excited to find out if its a he or a she!

Make sure everyone has made their predictions to their due dates in our other August thread and start chatting in the post partum thread after!

@redsmarties: is it your last week or day of work? Either way, that's awesome! It's so nice to be done!

  12. Mrs D

@redsmarties: @delight: Thanks for the sizing tip! I just ordered 3 pairs of PJ's (the set @delight: got, a set with capri drawstring pants and a night gown set) all in large. We'll see how they fit and I'll return one or two depending on how it goes! Also got a cute little taggies toy (to get my order over $75 for free shipping)...those taggies are the cutest toys ever!

@Alivoo01: How are you feeling? How is bedrest going? Do you have stuff to keep you busy?! Hopefully the rest will help your fluid levels...are you just chugging water?

I have two more weeks of work to get through, but other than that -- we're all in the home stretch, ladies! @redsmarties: So excited for you! You'll get to rest and finish preparing for the LO!

@.twist.: What a beautiful baby boy! I was so glad to see your post! Hope you and he, and hubby are snuggling right now! Congratulations, Mama! Can't wait to read the birth story!

@StrawberryBee: SERIOUSLY? WTF on the OB's comment, is right! Skin to skin is almost always recommended. I am so sorry you have to deal with that. I hope that you can stand your ground.

@delight: I am so glad you called as well. Always better to know! I'm hoping your LO hangs in there a little longer!

Guys, I feel totally spoiled. Saturday, my parents threw a beautiful baby shower for us! We got a lot of things that we were needing (baby monitor, carrier, diapers, wipes) and TONS of clothes! So excited! I feel spoiled because, DH's family is throwing us another one next weekend! Sheesh! Our LO is going to be ridiculously well dressed and have everything he needs. I can't help but worry that we're spoiled brats for getting multiple showers. Same thing happened for our wedding. Each family wanted to host something. I just hope both sides know how grateful we are (I can be kind of awkward when it comes to accepting gifts). Did anyone else have multiple showers?

@Mrs D: good work with the pjs! I love taggies. I got the taggies bouncer!

@greenebee: thanks! The longer babe cooks, the better. Although I'm starting to get a lot of hip pain at night and pressure "down below" so things are getting uncomfortable! That's so nice of your families to each throw a shower! Sounds fun! I had a small book club shower with about 15 of us, and in late September my SILs are hosting a family and friend shower. Well shower and "meet the baby" party.

Am I weird that I am not so keen on immediate skin to skin? I have already told DH that I want him to hold LO first until I am comfortable enough to hold her? I think I must be crazy...

  16. greenebee

    cherry / 189 posts

@Mrs D: I think whatever your gut feelings are telling you to do is right. That is the main thing that this pregnancy has taught me. Trust your instincts. Maybe you somehow know that it's in your best interest for DH to hold your LO while you take a moment to rest and process the birth. You're totally not crazy!

  17. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@Mrs D: Plus remember you could be too shaky to feel comfortable holding the baby right away. I say just go with the moment :). Whether it's you or your DH, it's all beneficial!

@Mrs D: definitely not crazy I was one of the last to hold DS after I had him. I was shaking pretty bad from my epidural/csection anesthesia that I legit thought I was having a seizure(lol), so I was terrified to hold him. my husband, IL's and mom all held him before I did....but I did also fall asleep for a little bit afterwards because I was exhausted/drained. do what feels comfortable to you

so...this is something I have been wondering about lately...maybe some of you second or more time around Moms can help me out here.

What do the first 8-12 hours post delivery look like 1) assuming everything is a-okay and 2) you deliver vaginally?

I just had my BF class Saturday, so I know they want you to feed in the first 2 hours but like...I guess I am kinda wondering other than stare at the new baby what does that time look like?

    -when do guests come visit?
-are you alone in the room with baby (or virtually alone minus some checks from nurses, etc)
    -do you sleep?
-when can you get up to freshen up? when will you want to get up?
    -when do you eat?

I am not someone who just sits still well, so I guess I am just trying to understand what that time will look like!?

@Mrs D: I am wondering this too. I also wonder about BF'ing/pumping right away since my insurance won't let me buy the pump until after the baby is added to the insurance policy which can't happen until after birth. Does the hospital have one I can use in the meanwhile if for some reason I can't nurse right away?

  21. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@Modern Daisy: Ya the hospitals have them for you to use while there and to rent if you want when you leave. I also bought a Medela harmony (manual single) as they are very reasonable $35 and it will fill any gaps between delivery and when I get mine through insurance. Also - I have had many moms suggest carrying this in your diaper bag for emergency engorgement situations!

  22. GrapeCrush

    grapefruit / 4823 posts

@Mrs D: now I can answer some of those, but I did have DS via csection. This is what happened:
After I was stapled up and they were wheeling me into my room, DH was following behind with DS in his bassinet, we went back to my labor and delivery room. We got to be in there for an hour or more(this is more of a guess to me, since I was sort of out of it because of the epidural and anesthesia). My IL's were at the hospital and basically came in right away, my mom and brother came too to visit. Once I woke up(I had fallen asleep) I held DS and then we tried to BF. Then they took me to my recovery room and DS to the nursery for his tests. I had him at 8:30 at night, so I slept right after the took me to my room. Some of those things might depend on when you have you LO and hospital procedures. Again I had a csection, so the timeline would probably be slightly different. I was able to eat and shower the next day.

As soon as they tell you, you can shower, do it!! It was like the best shower ever lol

Well ladies, I'm getting induced this Friday!!! It's so surreal. The news hit me and the hubby like a ton of bricks. We're excited to meet DS, but we're also so not ready! My fluid levels improved today, but not enough so eviction notice has been posted!!

@Alivoo01: No WAY! Oh, that's so exciting! Surreal, but thrilling! Hooray for August baby #2!

AFM, things are WEIRD over here. I've had these funny pains/cramps today, and baby girl shifted positions and is SUPER active. Luckily, I have a midwife appointment tomorrow, so hopefully she can answer some questions for me. I'd be okay if baby came a bit early - but maybe not until I finish work on Friday!

@Alivoo01: how exciting! As for not being "ready" - just remember you are never totally ready no matter when they come...so try to relax and enjoy these next few days! No matter what you'll do great!

@sarbear: Thanks for the input...its so great to hear this real life feedback!

    @redsmarties: Sounds promising!

@Mrs D: Oh, s'mores. Do you have a campfire/fire pit? How delicious. I've eaten two ice cream sandwiches since getting home from work...and there's one more in there calling my name.

@redsmarties: I feel like things are going on for me too. Lots of movement, different positions, pressure, pain and my wacky spotting. I imagine our bodies will be going through a lot of changes in the next few weeks! Hopefully your midwife and my OB will let us know what's going on tomorrow!

@Mrs Hedgehog: It's seriously surreal that we're all in the home stretch now!! Not much longer for any of us!

@StrawberryBee: I'm sorry that you've had such bad experiences with doctors. The good thing is, from what I'm told, the nurses are the ones who run the show in L+D.

@greenebee: I had two showers. A friends/family one and a work shower. We got SO MUCH STUFF between the two. I'm still thanking people up and down. So grateful!

@Alivoo01: OMG OMG OMG!!!!! You must be experiencing so many different emotions right now! How many weeks will you be on Friday? I agree with Mrs. D that you can never be truly ready. At least you're getting a heads up and can take this week to let the news sink in and finish preparing whatever's left. And don't worry if you don't get it all done. As long as the baby has a milk, diapers, and a place to sleep you're in good shape. So excited for you!

@delight: Keep us posted on your appt tomorrow! Man, we've got a lot of action going on for July!

@Mrs D: @redsmarties: ATM I'm eating a brownie sundae and I know as soon as I'm done I'm going to want seconds! haha S'mores and ice cream sandwiches sound good too!

@redsmarties: @delight: actually this is my hidden talent - making crazy dessert with the contents in my pantry! I found I had some Hershey bars the other day which was the final piece! Take a graham cracker and make two equal squares on a plate - on one side out one marshmallow and on the other put a square or two if chocolate! In my microwave 15 seconds nukes the marshmallow enough...put the sides together and viola - happy preggo lady!

  39. Sapphiresun

@Mrs D: Good question! I'm totally confused on the timeline too. Like, if people are waiting around for hours for baby to be born, I kind of feel pressure to let them in ASAP, but not sure if I'll WANT to.

@Alivoo01: Oh wow! All the best to you for a happy healthy baby and an easy delivery.

@redsmarties: That's awesome. Cheeseburgers have been my only "craving" this entire time. I say this because I do like cheeseburgers in general, so it may be more of an "I have an excuse to eat them" than an actual craving. That pretzel one sounds delish.

Ok... who else has the Graco Pack n' Play with the reversible napper/changer? We assembled ours because we were thinking about using it instead of the crib for a little while because I thought it would be great just to be able to wheel it between rooms, and we didn't get our dresser/changer in time so we need a place to change the baby. Question 1) does it actually fit through any of your guys' doors?? 2) How the heck do you get the napper/changer part off???? Ours is seriously stuck. There's some references to two "buttons" that it just pops off but I can't find them for the life of me. Anybody smarter than me that has found these mystical buttons already?

  40. Mrs. Oatmeal

    blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts

@Mrs D: it's possible I just found marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate chips in my pantry. Then subsequently ate four s'mores. Possibly.
@Sapphiresun: yes to cheeseburgers. They're just so good. And I have that pack n play, but haven't opened it yet, so I will keep an eye out for the mystical buttons.
