@MrsB2012: @Mrs D: @StrawberryBee: How do you ladies pump while feeding? I feel like I would get more sleep in if I did this. I've always thought about it, but thought the bottle wouldn't fit between the baby and my boobs.
@StrawberryBee: 8 hours?! OMG!! Super jelly!! yet that's flipping awesome!!!

@Alivoo01: question wasn't directed at me but the couple times I attempted to pump while feeding I put her in football hold on a pillow on the left and pumped the right. I'm curious how others accomplished it though!

@Alivoo01: I know, I couldn't believe it when I looked at the clock and our bf'ing timer!
I nearly always feed E in the football hold (it's the most comfortable for the two of us). I usually have a nursing tank on during the night. So this morning she actually gave me enough time to go downstairs and grab a shield/bottle setup and my Freestyle. I set her up on the side that was leaking less, and hooked the shield into my nursing tank on the other side. Then I just let them both have at it. My glider is comfy enough that I can have her in the boppy (hooked around my side) hands free. I don't even have to hold the bottle, because between the nursing tank and the suction it stays in place (though it was getting kinda heavy towards the end, so be careful you don't spill it all out).
Oh, and make sure you have a cap handy to secure the bottle when you're done pumping :).

So E and I went out this morning (apparently there's a tornado watch for the area...whoops!). I hit up DSW and got a pair of riding boots (these: http://www.dsw.com/shoe/me+too+dede+wide+calf+riding+boot?prodId=284251&productRef=SEARCH) and a pair of clarks black sneakers on clearance. Stopped by DD for my (decaf) iced coffee fix, and CVS to pick up some gripe water. I'm pretty sure her hysterics last night were due to gas, and if there's anything I can do to make her feel better I will :(.
Then we got a package from Amazon in the mail, so she now has a boppy noggin nest (I'm freaked out because I think I felt a flat part starting on the back of her head) and some toys and board books. Bless the person who gave us an Amazon gift card; it's so much more handy for me than BRU, which I feel is pretty overpriced unless you have a 20% off coupon.
I am also LOVING the Aden + Anais burpy bibs I got on a whim at Home Goods. Desperately wish I had picked up more; they are fabulous for snapping around E's neck and catching her spit up, but since that happens often and there's only two of them they end up in the wash a lot. I know everyone loves the gerber cloth diapers for bibs, but for me they're too small and slide off my shoulder too easily :/.
What is everyone's favorite item so far?

@Sapphiresun: @StrawberryBee: football hold makes sense!!! I'll have to do that! Does the pump noise bother your LO when nursing?

@Alivoo01: No. But my kid is a boob monster. Really, just a greedy little eater in general - bottle or boob. I'm not really sure anything could deter her.

SHE JUST ROLLED OVER! Sorry but that deserves the caps. 6 +5 and she rolled tummy to back for the first time! I tried to get it on video to show DH but she was too pissed about tummy time at that point to even try.
She looked shocked. I was shocked. I thought they didn't do that until later.

@Mrs Hedgehog: ahhh, congrats!! We're 8 weeks + and still haven't rolled over yet ;D
@Alivoo01: ha, same as @Sapphiresun:. Nothing distracts her from her milk once she latches.
Oh, DH fed her Saturday night from the bottle (it's been a week or two since we last did that) with me sitting right next to her and she didn't seem to care. As long as she gets her milk

@delight: @Alivoo01: It takes a little bit of coordination. I don't have one of the bras, I just put B on one side then I let her legs fall a bit so the bottle can fit between her body and my boobs. I cradle her with one arm and hold the pump with the other hand. It's really awkward, but I will admit, one time, I was doing it, I managed to text on my phone at the same time. haha I know you're impressed
@StrawberryBee: I Love DSW. I wish we had them in Canada! I found Ovol worked well for B when she gets gassy. She's been so fussy for about a week every night at 10pm. Like screaming hysterics that I've never seen. Then I realized that coordinated with the timing that we opened a bag of coffee beans from Costa Rica which I find quite strong and sometime give me a bit of a tummy ache. So I didn't have any coffee yesterday and last night she didn't have her fussy time. Hopefully it's just those particular beans and not all coffee.. I feel like a zombie without my morning coffee!
My favorite item is the Bloomin' Bath, it makes bath time so easy and comfortable for both of us. Also, my Aden and Anasis swaddle blankets. My favorite clothing item though... My grandma went to Australia like 4 years ago. She bought me baby pink Ugg boots. Real ones haha. I wasn't even married at the time but she got them for us. I put them on B all the time. So.Friggin.Cute!

@MrsB2012: hee, that's the beauty of the football hold, I almost always have the use of my hands :D. I just tuck her in there and fiddle with my phone. Then I feel guilty about doing that instead of gazing at her adoringly, but really, she's quite focused on what she's doing!
Oh, I hope it's not the Starbucks refrigerated coffee I've been drinking lately...I would hate to give my mocha up! She had a really bad attack last night; completely inconsolable, so I hope this works the next time it happens (actually, I hope it doesn't happen again, but that's wishful thinking ;)).
I love the look of the blooming bath! and pink baby uggs...The Cute!!

@Alivoo01: I use the football hold on K and a hands free bra on the other side. I can usually get 2oz no problem when I do this and the milk start flowing immediately - presumably since K helps me achieve quick let down! Its definitely an awkward set up! The noise doesn't bother K at all - but she too is a boob monster and a makes quite a few noises herself...
@Mrs Hedgehog: Yay! How awesome!!!
So I just gave K her second bottle (2.5oz this time) and I am still shocked how well she takes it from me with the boob right there. I was able to pump after and got 3.5oz total from both sides. Now I have 7.5oz in my freezer which is a huge sigh of relief for me as I now have enough to get me through our two events this weekend without having to feed her!
We are 4.5 weeks and I just have started getting more frequent smiles - and oh my god I die over them! They melt my heart! We've also had a few nights of a consistent sleep schedule (down at 10:30pm, up to eat from 2-3am, down again, up to eat again between 6-7am and if I dont have anything to do that day we take another nap at 7/8am). I think the answer has been getting her some solid naps during the day so she isn't overly tired. Next week I am going to see if she'll nap in her big girl crib - eeek!
I took K to my work yesterday. I had to go see the nurse to get my flu shot so I popped in with her for a quick visit. she did great! Such a relief. I also found out that I think I am getting a promotion when I start back up on Dec 2 - I really hope it comes through...fingers crossed!!!

@Mrs D: great job on the bottle! Liv has been taking the bottle well this week too which is a huge sign of relief for me. We have another wedding this weekend!
I came on to catch up but I see I'm not the only one slacking on our board hope everyone is enjoying lots of baby cuddles, smiles and some well-deserved sleep!
My favourite items are Aden & Anais blankets, Sandra Boynton books (and iPad Apps!) and my Quinny stroller. Don't know what I'd do without the bassinet attachment!
nectarine / 2530 posts
@Mrs D: ahh, I'm so jealous on your clean house! Our house isn't dirty, it's just a MESS, and it's driving me bonkers. On top of that I decided earlier this week to start the massive effort of reorganizing the attic space, and I'm barely halfway through so there's empty boxes everywhere. Apparently I've been hoarding empty boxes. It was back when we were thinking about moving, so every time I bought a specialty item I saved the box so that I'd have a perfect way to pack it up. Yeah, that's all gotta go.
We had our two month visit today and had to enter through the non well baby entrance; ugh. E was so happy in the first part of the appointment that I felt doubly guilty over what was coming up next. She's 23.25" long and weighs 11 lbs 6 oz.
They had me hold her when it was time to give the injections, and oh I felt so horrible! Got her calmed down relatively quickly with a bottle of milk, and she's been dozing ever since. DH has been cuddling with her.

@delight: ha! I've totally been feeling guilty about slacking. But it does seem like we're not the only ones.
L has been sleeping a little better lately so my HB time hasn't been as frequent. I've also had a ton of guests over lately for some reason and I've been doing a lot of baking with pumpkin. It makes my house smell so amazing.
I'm starting to try and get L on a bit of a real schedule. He's currently napping right now, in his crib, and if feels so weird to have "me time". I can actually organize things and bake and clean and it's just... Weird! Kind of normal feeling! Haha
Hope everyone is doing well! L turned 3 months yesterday! I seriously cannot believe it!

I've been a major slacker, it's just so hard to post with a wiggly baby glued to me!
Let's see - my baby girl turned 2 yesterday, and Charlie turned 2 months. All 3 got shots yesterday
Charlie did alright, but had a slight reaction, very warm/sweaty all night, cried and only slept an hour. She's up to 10lbs on the nose and 21.5" long. She's doing wonderfully, getting a little less cranky everyday! She was a superstar at work this week, hardly crying at all.
I kind of feel like I'm losing my milk, I'm going to look up lactation cookies, and mothers milk tea, my boobs just feel really empty today. Sort of weird.
That's about it for us.
nectarine / 2220 posts
@.twist.: jealous of your schedule. Gives me hope that the light at the end of the tunnel is the three month mark, and we might really only have 3 weeks of craziness to go!
@StbHisMrs: I worry that I'm losing my milk as well, but I heard that at this point, the breasts are just more efficient so they don't get the same obvious engorgement. I've tried pumping a couple of her feedings just to SEE that there's enough and can still get 4oz at a feeding with the pump. LO is pooping frequently and averaging 7.2 oz/week gain so things must still be ok?
pomelo / 5326 posts
@.twist.: I can't believe L is three months already. Doesn't that just seem crazy?
@StbHisMrs: too bad about C's reaction. Poor little girl. L has her shots this week. I'm anxious just thinking about it!
We had another wedding last night and were gone from 4-1130pm. My mom babysat and L didn't sleep a wink. Yikes! Apparently she was fussy but drank 4 bottles! Hungry little bear. As soon as I sat down with her in her room at midnight she fell right asleep on my chest, must have been soooooo tired. Then she slept til 8am!! Holy crap 8 hours! I should keep her up to midnight every night! Haha. I'm sure she was just milk drunk.
I actually want to start her bedtime earlier, like 730/8. Is anyone else doing this? She's a gem all day but is so fussy in the evenings and I think she is just over tired. I try to keep her up in the evenings and it's not really working for me. I just don't know what to do with her in the evenings. Can you girls share your evening schedules? She is usually only awake for an 1-1.5 hours at the most during the day before having a nap. So when 6:00 hits I try to keep her up for a few hours but I guess I shouldn't be doing this. I need a hand book!

@StbHisMrs: @Sapphiresun: funny, I was just telling DH that I was worried the mini pill was affecting my supply because I don't feel super full any more. I pumped this morning (after 7 hours) and only got 2oz out of my left side. Barely :(. Not sure what to think.
@delight: e had her shots on Thursday and so far has been okay. They were warm with red bumps for a few days. I'm also curious on sleep schedules, we have a midnight bedtime too .
E is two months, 11 lbs 6 oz and 23.25" long. Still no rolling over, but I have to admit I've slacked on tummy time these last few days. She was super fussy with gas last night. Tons of spitting up!

@delight B has a routine, it works well, but my goal is to have her asleep by 10.. That will take a while to get into I think though.
Around 9 I get her in her jammies and feed her in my bedroom with just the lamp on.
95% of the time, at 10pm on the button, she has an absolute colicy fit. I take her in her room and rock her until she eventually falls asleep. Lots of times I'll read her a book while she's half sleeping.
I take her back yo my room and then she eats, usually for about half hour. I change her diaper then she feeds for about another 10 mins. I swaddle her up and put her in her cradle that's beside my bed.
This week I've had her in bed by about 11, last week it was 12. It kind of depends how long she has her fit for though. I found if I drink coffee it's realllllly bad, if I don't have any coffee then occasionally we've gotten lucky and she doesn't have one, but usually she will still have a shorter fit.
It's not much of a routine, but it works for us. I bathe her in the mornings cuz she LOVES her bath. She used to wake up once a night, then when she was maybe a month old, I put a sheep skin thingy upside down under her sheet in her cradle. Ever since that day she's slept through the night.
I got a new carrier finally. It's by Olives and Applesauce. Just a lady from the states who made it based on what she wanted. It's like a beco but has a few more features. I absolutely love it. We go for a 5.5km hike about 3 times a week and then just a 3km hike the other days, it was so comfy for the bigger hike yesterday. Plus when we saw a moose ( we see this one quite often) it got spooked and started running at the dogs to scare them off, so I ran towards the car and B stayed nice and cozied up on my chest and didn't even really wake up. That's a sign of a good carrier haha.
@delight That's so awesome you got out for an evening! That's awesome you can leave her for a few hours like that now!
Happy Thanksgiving weekend to my fellow Canadian Bees!

Guys, dh and I left N alone with her grandparents last night while we went for dinner and to a friend's going away party. I fed the baby at 5, and was gone from 6-1030. We thought there was a chance might miss two feedings so I left three three oz bottles and told my parents to start with one between 7-8pm and then add an oz at a time until she seems done from the extra. I expected maybe she's eat a full one and an oz or two from the second if she was still hungry, and then if the party was really fun and we weren't going to be home until late she'd have another 3-5 oz at 11.
My parents texted me at 8:30 to say that she'd gotten hungry At 7 and eaten two bottles (6oz) and was still upset and hungry so they tried to soohe her till 8 then broke down and gave her the whole third bottle. And she seemed fine then. So a total of 9 oz in 2.5 hours. I then arrived home at 1030 and breastfed her. (I'd pumped and dumped 4 oz while we were out for my own comfort just before they called).
But I freaking out. There's no way I'm producing 9oz for her in one feeding on any regular basis! And even if I could that seems like a lot?!? When I pump I'm more around 3-4 oz every three hours so I'm totally concerned that I'm starving her or something. Diapers are plentiful and she's gaining an average of 7.2 oz/week this month but it just makes me worries to see her eat that much. If you've actually followed my novel... What do you think? Just being a piggy because the bottle was so easy? Missed her mommy and was eating her feelings? Haha.
If anybody pumps more regularly, how much expressed milk does your baby eat at a typical meal?

@delight: I'd love K to have an earlier bedtime, but she goes to sleep at 11 on the dot. I don't want to risk changing it, because she's sleeping 5-6 hours in a row at 11, so I'm worried that an earlier bedtime might change that. We'll see. I guess experimenting is the only way to go!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@delight: quick response while K is eating! I start her bedtime routine at 9pm. For now (5.5 weeks) I am changing her, running her w the purple j&j lotion, putting her in her jammies and feeding her. We feed in the bedroom, lights off, sound machine on - once she is done I swaddle her, rock her for a few minutes (mostly to avoid spit ups) then lay her down usually by 10.
I am planning to start working on her taking her last nap in her crib. I def think you should encourage her to nap after 6pm as I have read that babies really can be a mess if they get over tired. When she is established in her crib at night - hopefully by 8 weeks - ill follow the same routine only add in a bath most nights, a book and likely nurse her in her room as opposed to our room. Ill hope to have her down by 7/8pm for this routine! DH and I decided tonight we'd like to be back to just us in the master by 8/9weeks!

So my weekend was fantastic! Both the Baby Shower and Baptism went extremely well! Baby K gave a solid B performance at the shower and an A performance at the baptism!
I had the craziest experience after the shower. I fed K at 9:30 before leaving for the shower and took two bottles with me. Did I bother to think about the fact that I would be crazy engorged by the time I got home - no! I was literally wincing when I got home at 4PM!!!!! K was like literally being squirted in the face by my boobs - I felt so bad as she was starving but clearly overwhelmed...note to self - dont leave home without a pump!!!!
Here is Ms K in her special baptism gown (purchased by my IL's in Ireland and worn by K's aunt for her baptism 35 years ago).

@Sapphiresun: "eating her feelings" lol. E will sometimes take a whole 5 oz bottle with DH if I'm out too long. 9 does seem like a lot, but I'm thinking it was just a fluke. I wouldn't worry about her not getting enough; as long as she's gaining she's probably fine. Remember they're better at getting milk out of us than the pump.
clementine / 930 posts
I have been so bad at posting! I'm all caught up on reading but couldn't possibly respond to everyone.
Here's what I remember people asking/talking about.
Weight loss: I'm down about 40 lbs from right before S was born. I only gained like 12 lbs when I was pregnant so I'm happy about that but that was all gone by about four weeks pp so I haven't lost anything more in five weeks. I was overweight to begin with so I would like to lose more, but I'm so hungry all the time, I'm just not losing.
Sleep: S usually sleeps 7-8 hours for his first stretch and then 2 for the second. He had two nine hour stretches in a row last weekend though. I was convinced something was wrong with him. He doesn't really sleep during the day though. There have been days when he doesn't really nap at all the whole day, other than little ten or fifteen minute catnaps.
Bedtime routine: non existent.
Rolling over: he rolled over at about four weeks but doesn't do it consistently. Luckily we did get a video of it!
We had our first road trip downstate last weekend. It was so stressful. He didn't sleep at all the whole way down and we had to stop a ton because he was not a happy camper. We left the house at 11:30 and didn't get there until 8:30. It's normally a 4.5 hour drive...while we were downstate we went out for out anniversary and left S with my dad. He did great and it was so nice to go out to dinner. We even played a little blackjack at the casino! The trip home was better. He slept for two hours so we made it in less time.
We brought him to a wedding this past weekend. He did really well. We forgot to bring formula though so I spent most of the time nursing him. We still supplement with formula, usually 4-8 ounces a day, and I find it easier to give him a bottle when we're out and about because I'm still not too comfortable nursing in public. But it was like trial by fire this time! Busy hotel lobby + nursing baby = momma feels like she can nurse anywhere now!
I go to a weekly breastfeeding support group where they have a scale so I can make sure he's gaining weight, especially since I would like to get off formula all together. It's today so I will have to see how he did this week. He gained 7 ozs the first week and then only 1 the next week, so I'm hoping for a good gain this week. We had his two month check up last week and the doctor was happy with his weight gain. I just worry so much about my supply. I eat oatmeal with flax and brewers yeast most mornings and I take mothers milk plus special blend every day, but I still feel like I'm not making enough milk.
Other than that, he did good with his shots. He turned so red and held his breath, I felt so bad for him. He acted like he was having some muscle pain from them, but otherwise, he was just extra sleepy the next day. He weighed 11 lbs even at the appointment, so he's gained 2 lbs 8 ozs since birth. His weight and height are low percentile a but his head circumference is the 99th! He's got a big noggin!
Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying baby snuggles and good sleep. I'm going to try to keep up with this board a little better!

@.twist.: crazy to think our boys are 3 months old now....
@StbHisMrs: My supply seems to fluctuate. Sometimes, I'll pump 6-7oz in one sitting and the next, barely 3oz even though my boobs feel full! So weird!!
@delight: DS takes a nap at 6 until whenever he feels like waking up. I usually give him a bath around 8 then a bottle at 8:30 to top off his tank, swaddle and turn on his mobile to signal bedtime around 9:30ish.
TMI but, I'm 13 weeks PP and still have random discharge (not bloody). Any one else have this?
I also started work today. Didn't think I'd crying dropping him off, but the longer I hung around with him at dropoff, the more upset I got. Didn't help he was all smiles as I left...

Ok time to play catch-up!
@MrsB2012: I don't know when we'll move her out of our room. She's still sleeping in the PNP next to our bed, and I love having her so close. It makes me sad to think of her not being there, but I know we'll have to move her eventually. Maybe around 3-4 months?
@delight: I think we're planning to just use condoms until I am done breastfeeding (hopefully 1 year) then I'll get back on the pill. I am too nervous about supply/getting pregnant again to take the mini pill. I don't think we will have anymore kids (my DH has kids already from a previous marriage) so my DH will eventually get a vasectomy, but i don't want to do something so permanent yet just in case we change our mind.
M usually goes to sleep between 8 and 8:30. I love having an hour or two to spend with DH alone. Plus she is usually super fussy by then--I can't imagine keeping her up any later! We usually start her bath around 7:45. We do bath, lotion, pjs, swaddle, nurse.
@redsmarties: M's shots went really well. She just cried for a little while and she never had a fever or any other adverse effects.
@.twist.: M actually really likes tummy time, but she usually only puts up with it for 5 minutes at a time. I usually try and do it in the morning when she's her happiest.
@Mrs D: I lost 25lbs quickly after delivery, but I still have 7lbs to lose to get back to pre-preg weight. I'd also love to lose an additional 5lbs, but not sure how realistic that is. Love that picture of K--beautiful gown!!
@Alivoo01: I've been good about taking my pre-natals, but only because I leave them on my night stand so I see the bottle before bed every night. Oh, and I still have random discharge too--I think (hope) it's normal!
@StrawberryBee: I am obsessed with burpy bibs! We have five and still constantly do laundry. We could buy a dozen more and it still wouldn't be too much! The Foscam is probably my favorite purchase, though. I love being able to check in on her from my phone. Our girls have similar stats! At her two month appt she was 11lbs 7oz and 22.75 inches.
@Mrs Hedgehog: Yayy! M rolled over a couple days shy of 2 months. She was so proud of herself. She kept doing it over and over again, so I have a lot of videos of it.
@Sapphiresun: I think it's highly unlikely that she's eating that much at each feeding. It was probably just a fluke. The milk probably came out faster than she's used to so she just had a little pig-out session!
The past three nights M has slept from 8-4:30/5, then she nurses and goes back down for another couple of hours. It has been glorious! I hope it continues. She has also found her hands and is constantly trying to shove both of them in her mouth. It's pretty hilarious!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@lawbee11: DS found his hands this past week and is an avid hand sucker. No thumb, but he will ball up this hand and suck on the part between his thumb and pointer finger. That's hilarious M tries to put BOTH of her hands in her mouth though!
Another question for you ladies - is your LO swaddled when they sleep? If so, when do you plan on swaddle weaning? DS is mover when he sleeps, arms flail around and legs go up and down. Not sure when or if I even can get him swaddle weaned!
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Alivoo01: um, it's insane that our little guys are 3 months. I'm seriously in awe. Does C have an adjusted age? How are you finding he measures up to other 3 month old milestones? Also, for the discharge, I still get some weird discharge that is not bloody. I've never had so many weird situations down there before! Haha
As for swaddling, we do swaddle for naps and night. I will wean him slowly (one arm at a time) once he learns to roll over.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Alivoo01: M refuses to take a pacifier, so I actually really hope she finds her thumb soon. M is still swaddled for nighttime sleep. We aren't planning to wean until we have to, so when she starts rolling. She does not like it at all, but she sleeps sooo much better with it on. I am ashamed to say she still takes a majority of her naps in the snugabunny bouncer, so she's not swaddled for those.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@lawbee11: I've only recently started putting him in his crib for naps. And not every nap either. He totally had a nap in his bouncer the last 2 days.
I have been reading sleep books and articles like mad. I'm so worried I'm creating bad sleep habits (ie: sleeping in the bouncer) that are going to come back to bite me in the ass later. I stress so much over our sleep. Ugh.

How did I get so far behind? I could have sworn I'd posted more recently...
@StrawberryBee: my favourite item is the ergo. P falls asleep almost immediately, which is amazing considering the fuss she makes when I put her in it. It's a lifesaver for grocery shopping, plus any way I can get an uninterrupted walk in makes me feel much more sane! I wish I didn't have to be constantly moving though. It would be awesome if I could wear her around the house.
@Mrs Hedgehog: Yea for rolling over! That's super fun!
@Mrs D: Fingers crossed for your promotion!
And that's as far as I've gotten during this wakeup. Cross your fingers that she gives me a few hours!
