@Alivoo01: Thanks for mentioning the infant insert! I forgot I was meaning to look in my manual about when to remove that and apparently you're not supposed to use it once baby is more than 11 pounds! Took it out today.

Ugh, our sleep the last few days has been horrendous. I'm a complete zombie.
I need to play catch up here, but for now, what do ya'll do about naps if you have errands to run? I like to keep us pretty busy because I go stir crazy at home all day. Do I need to stay home and have a super strict nap schedule?
clementine / 930 posts
@.twist.: S sleeps in the car usually on the way to our destination and that's about it. He sometimes will keep napping, but taking his car seat out of the car usually wakes him up. Luckily, it's a 30 minute drive into town for us, so he usually gets an hour or close to it. But otherwise, I try to make sure he gets a nap when we get home and I try not to run errands two days in a row.

@.twist.: I just take DS along with. He'll sleep in his car seat.

I've been reading along when A naps, but find it hard to type with one hand. She mostly naps on me ;).
We've been cloth diapering since A was 3 weeks old. I love it! we have a mix of prefolds and some bumgenius freetimes. I prefer the prefolds, but use the bumgenius at night. I need to buy/make some fleece liners for moisture wicking so I can use the prefolds at night. She's just starting to grow out of her newborn diaper covers It's bittersweet.
So far we've been using condoms when we DTD but I have an appointment for a paraguard on Nov. 5th. So over condoms...
We stopped swaddling at around three weeks. She just wasn't having it anymore. I kinda wish she loved it! It's so cute and seems so snuggly. We use sleep sacks now, and they are pretty great.
For the ladies who's babes sleep long stretches, what do you do about your supply? Did you just let it even out? If A sleep longer stretches I get SO engorged.
@JamieLee: I plan on the four gift (need, want, wear, read) for xmas too! I love the idea. I also use the ergo when shopping, A hates the car seat unless the car is moving. The ergo is my lifesaver. And your halloween costume is the best!!
@.twist.: If I have errands I just stick A in the ergo and she is out like a light. She loves that thing!

@JamieLee: Nice!! Now I kind of wish I had considered Grovias before going to BG's. Though they're working great for us so far.
Definitely not trim though! Here's a picture of her in them. Big fluffy butt.
@Alivoo01: heh, thanks! She was actually smiling at the camera for a while (I have to admit, it kind of freaks me out. Big circle of red lights staring at me? brrr!). She kept on smiling at us, as if to say, "hey guys, I'm uuupppppp! Come get me!"
And yeah, nothing like peeling your baby off of your skin while trying to keep him/her asleep.
Yay for 6 hours, that's awesome!! We've only gotten 8 once or twice, and now we're back to more like 4ish hours.
DH decided to defrost a bag of milk from the freezer just to see how long it took. I told him that was fine, but he was taking one of the night feeds if he was going to do that!
@JamieLee: Whoops, guess it's time for us to take out the infant insert too 0_o
@.twist.: We have no schedule. I'm probably not the best person to ask lol. If I need to go out, I wait until she's fed and then out we go. Works great, if I remember to bring a freaking pacifier with us!
@JessKas: Right around 2 months I no longer got super awful engorged if I went long stretches without feeding her. I think someone else mentioned that your supply tends to regulate itself at that time. Do you have a pump? If you wake up feeling awfully full you could pump it out (or hand express, but I've never tried that).
And as I continue to add to my PP wardrobe, just picked up this from Zulily today:
The folds separate so that you can feed without practically removing your shirt (Lawbee, I remember you had something similar?)
I also picked up two nursing bras. They probably won't fit -- I got two cup sizes -- but at that price I couldn't pass it up. It's hard to find bras in bigger sizes :/.

@StrawberryBee: How did you defrost your frozen milk? In warm water or in the fridge? I'm curious to see how long it takes to defrost frozen milk in the fridge!
I really like that top!!! It's a bit more than I'd like to spend though. I need to keep an eye out for something similar.
Anyone have tips on how to more effectively remove milk from the boobs while pumping? I'm sick and tired of getting clogged ducts during the day that by the end of the day, half of my boob is clogged and hard, and super painful!! To the point I can't point my arm down and want to cry! Fortunately, DS is great at removing the clog when he nurses, but that's not until hours later... Sorry I keep complaining about clogged ducts. I don't know why I constantly get them!! So effing frustrating. Sometimes, I get them even when DS is nursing... wtf?!
pomelo / 5326 posts
@.twist.: she will fall asleep in car and will usually sleep through my errands. Today we managed 1.5 hours sleeping in the mall. If she wakes up I have to feed her right away or she'll keep crying.
@JessKas: I think my supply is evening out. But I always pump in morning if she has slept 6+ hours.
@jamielee: what an adorable gnome!
@Alivoo01: I don't think I have had a clogged duct. However I do find massaging breast while pumping helps me get my milk out. When I defrost milk in warm water it hardly takes any time at all. If I just out in fridge it takes hours so I usually defrost over night.
@StrawberryBee: the wood cube I got from Costco is very similar to that target one. I love them!

@Alivoo01: In the fridge; it was 4 oz in a lansinoh bag. I want to say that we put it in at 10:30am and it was liquid by 5pm? I'd have to check with DH though, I'm terrible with remembering things.
It's more than I should be spending too, but I'm tired of looking frumpy.
As far as I know I haven't gotten a clogged duct, so I can't help there :(.
@delight: nice, I'll have to keep an eye out at BJs!
DSS is with us this weekend and has a cold, and keeps on holding E's hand to soothe her when she starts crying. I want to put E in a bubble ;_;.
Also, I was trying to find out if I could buy non refundable tickets to a lego event for DH and DSS as a Christmas present, but it's on a weekend we don't have the kids and after asking his mom if they had any plans for that weekend, his battery died and he's lost his charger. Sigh. I don't have her phone # (and I'm not exactly sure I want her to have mine).
Am being subjected to Sponge Bob again. HELP.

Wow - what a last couple of days we have had!
K went through what I think was a growth spurt Weds/Thurs and was terribly fussy between 6-9pm...I was quite worried she was developing a witching hour! Thankfully she was an angel last night for Grandma who babysat while DH and I went out for his birth day.
She has had three developmental milestones 1) I think she intentionally reached out and swatted something on her play mat yesterday 2) she is holding your gaze and intentionally smiling now - melts my heart and 3) she has really started "chirping" a lot these last 3-4 days. I just love all the changing that is happening!
She also has developed somewhat of a "routine" taking a 3 hour nap right our 3-6pm for the last 3 days. I really enjoy this consistency. Today it allowed me to workout and get dinner in the oven!
Last night she slept for 6 hours and holy hell my boobs were so engorged. I pumped when I woke up (5 hours into her sleep) because I was leaking everywhere. Our dog then had to get up which woke her up so I fed her what I pumped. I am hoping my supply evens out soon like some of you mentioned above. I'm intrigued to see what she does tonight.
So - also DH and I DTD...totally comfortable which has me concerned I am now "loose" - sorry for the TMI! However, the idea of using condoms is awful so we'll be waiting two more weeks until BC is effective! And my jog today...holy hell - hardest mile of my life. I have a 5K scheduled for Nov 17th...god help me!
I'm going to post a separate picture of K's amazing smiles...

OH and I LOVE the need/want/wear/read idea for Christmas...I think all the "needs" will be covered by Grandparents and other family...so maybe I'll get her a DayCare need...like a cute bag for her bottles or something.
Need: DayCare something
Want: Anywhere Chair (btw with all coupons/promos I had I got it for $5...Woohoo!)
Wear: She'll be in need of 6 mos stuff - I got next to nothing in this size. Lots of 3-6 and lots of 9 but no 6!
Read: I need to build her library a bit - so I'll work on this with Polar Express, Night Before Christmas and some of the Legends Books about Michigan (@JamieLee: do you have any of these? I just love them!)
clementine / 930 posts
@Mrs D: how did you get an anywhere chair for $5?!? So jealous! I really want to get one for S but I don't know if DH will go for it. And I have those Legends books on his Christmas Amazon wish list. My friend has the Sleeping Bear Dunes book for her daughter and it's such a sad story! I live close to the dunes so I want to get at one especially. There's a Leelanau book, which is the county we live in, but it was kind of weird...
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@JamieLee: It was a combo of rewards certificates (from buying our furniture), a 15% coupon code and a $25 off coupon that came in the mail! I was super pumped! K's monthly pictures will now be taken in it even though it is technically her "want" Christmas gift!
I need to read through those Legends books to see which ones I want. I remember the Dunes one being a sad story - I wonder what the Mackinac one and petoskey stone ones are like. Those are the two I would gravitate towards most as we always go to Mackinac during the summer and I literally cannot walk a beach without hunting for petoskey stones!
I know I want the M is for Mitten book too.

@Mrs D: cute smiles!and that's a great sleep stretch!! I had to pump at about 5/6 hours for the first couple weeks that she slept that long. Now I just pump after her First AM feed around 7. She usually goes back to sleep til 8:30 so I pump during that time. By that point my right boob hasn't been tapped in 11 hours (I feed just left over night) but it's not uncomfy anymore and I still get 5 oz.
Liv had her 2 month shots on Friday. DH took the day off which was so nice! She was all smiles at the appointment, except for the needles but she only cried a minute. I didn't give her Tylonel because she seemed totally fine after, just sleepy.
Does anyone else's LO's always hold their arms like this for pictures? It always looks like she is going to pound someone!

@delight: Hmmm...I wonder if I could transition to feeding on one side only at night to pump in the AM?! K always eats like 20 mins on the first side and only 6-8 mins on the second side. Maybe she could get enough from the first side?
And yes, K always has her "dukes up" as I call it. She even likes to swing her left hook at people sometimes when they hold her!

Yikes I'm so behind!
@Mrs D: A nap around dinner time sounds fabulous! Unfortunately that's my little guys fussy time. At least it has been for the past week or so.
@delight: Haha Liv is too cute! Even when she's about to go at it fisticuffs!
@.twist.: I don't let naps stop me from going out/running errands. He'll usually just nap on the go. I know it's not as great of a sleep, but it's better than nothing.
What's everyone doing for baby's first Halloween? We'll probably dress him up and stay home and pass out candy. Oh and take tons of pictures of course!
pomelo / 5326 posts
@Mrs D: Liv always falls asleep during overnight feeds, sometimes after only 10 mins so I just feed the left boob to make sure she gets the hind milk at some point overnight. Plus my right nipple still hurts so it gives it a break. Then I find come morning I can pump a good bottle or two's worth. She eats a ton from like 5-9 pm that overnight I don't find she really eats much at all. It sounds like K eats for longer at her overnight feedings so I don't know if one side would work for you? You'd have to experiment, and hopefully not throw off your supply!
@skipper2010: we are dressing her up and going to our neighbours and then to our family's houses. I could only find a
3-6m size so I think she'll be swimming in it! I also want to carve a pumpkin and take pictures of her in it! I can't wait to see all our August babes in their costumes!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@delight: I'm going to test it out tomorrow during the day since I can feed her often if one is not enough...I'd love to only have to nurse on one side so I could pump the other and build my stash. I am pretty much already panicked about pumping when I go back to work (there is no way I'll get in 3 pumping sessions at work) so I need all the stash built up I can manage!

I've probably missed some posts; had a hell of a day. I managed to get E down for the night (in her RnP) relatively early for her. She slept through until 8am. Awesome, right? Except that for 2-3 of those hours I spent hanging over the toilet, wretchedly ill. I'm going to call it food poisoning because it finally stopped around 3/4 in the afternoon (so like, 10 hours of being violently nauseous), but dear god. I flashed back to first trimester morning sickness, though it was never that bad.
And I have no idea what caused it. DH thinks it's the sweet tea I got. I'm just glad that it doesn't sound like something I could give to E (visions of her sick with the stomach flu made me want to cry).
@skipper2010: We're going out with some friends on Halloween (they have a two year old). I think she'll actually fit into the lamb outfit without it looking too huge. Hope the weather is nice!
@Mrs D: I'm also panicking about having enough of a supply when I go back to work. This Friday is my first day back. I snuck in a mini fridge into my office (with my bosses' permission) on Sunday ;).
nectarine / 2220 posts
@.twist.: I usually go out to run errands right after a feeding and she just sleeps in her car seat. She's not bothered at all by being moved and will usually sleep within 5 minutes of getting in the car seat and then stays asleep while I do errands and often quite a while after we get home. If she's asleep there I just let her sleep until she wakes up on her own.
In baby weirdness - does anybody else's kid like to snap your bra while they eat? N likes to pull on the space between my boobs and pull it back and let go. I assume the " thump" noise it makes is interesting to her or something?? Kind of annoying but can you even really attempt to get a baby this young to be taught not to do something?

@Alivoo01: A mini mic in the foscam takes out the static? I wish I'd known that. After looking all over the internet for fixes, I gave up and bought an audio monitor as well.
@MrsHedgehog: oo, mine is a squirmer too. How did crib transition go? I'm trying to work up the courage to try.
@Mrs D: Ugh, I don't know about Christmas yet. Maybe that will be a November job. Likely it will just be something small...maybe to commemorate first Christmas? It's not like she'll remember or be aware. Mine does the frantic crying mid-feed too sometimes. I wonder if the milk isn't coming out fast enough. So I take her off, distract her with something and try again an hour later. So far, it works.
@StrawberryBee: Dude pulled off your cover? I'm glad he had the sense to be embarrased. What a nut! The big circle of lights on the foscam creep me out too! Especially if there's a power outage and it resets to be looking straighy down at me in the glider while I'm nursing her in the middle of the night.
@JamieLee: That gnome costume is awesome. I bought Paige a ladybug sleeper. I'm going to put her in it and take her to work on Halloween (they are having a potluck).
@.twist.: I usually do an afternoon nap in the ergo during errands. It gets me out of the house and it's a guaranteed longer nap.
@Mrs D: What a cutie! Paige started smiling last week; it's so much fun!
@delight: Ah ha! Gonna pound someone. Too cute!
@StrawberryBee: Ugh, that sounds awful. I hope you feel better.
AFM, Paige just went through the 6-week growth spurt. And that was no fun, up every 1-1.5 hours all night from last Monday nighy to Friday night. But then I got my reward! Paige has been sleeping 4-5 hours at her longest stretch and then following with 3 hours. It's so nice! And she's much better as far as crying goes, more able to be soothed when we're out, it's soooooooo much better. I hope it lasts!

@skipper2010: We're going to dress DS up and take him trick or treating! One of my really good friends has TONS of nieces and nephews and her family treats me like one of their own so we're going with them! I'm excited! I just hope the costume fits him since he's small and he'll tolerate wearing it. Ha!
@StrawberryBee: Oh no!!! Glad it has passed now, but that totally sucks. No one's got time to be sick, especially now with a baby!!
@Sapphiresun: DS likes to put his hand on my boob or grabs the middle section of my bra while feeding. And he likes to tuck his hand into my shirt to place his hand on my boob while sleeping if I'm holding him. Funny yet cute.
@Grace: Yup on the mini mic and woohoo for long stretches of uninterrupted sleep!!

I need to catch up!
Talking about naps - B doesn't usually nap during the day. She'll nap in the morning, but not after that. Occasionally she will, but most often not. It kinda sucks :S I'd like to get her on a napping routine. She will however, go out cold as soon as she's in her carrier, which is handy as it makes shopping easy
She's been so fussy lately. I haven't gotten anything done today as she's been crying pretty much non stopped all day. I'm not sure if "purple crying" is a thing anywhere else, but they like to educate on it in our region. If you google it there's a good resource page. Kind of shows you that sometimes babies are just fussy, it can peak around 2 months and there's just not much you can do. Anyways, some others had mentioned fussy babies so just wanted to throw that page out there incase it helps anyone else.
It was my goal lately to have B in bed earlier, she wasn't going to bed until 11/12. The night before last I had her asleep by 930 and then last night 945. It's been really nice. I would like to have her asleep by 9 so that DH and I can spend some time together. I've gone to bed with her early though so haven't gotten to enjoy adult time yet We're getting a new roof so they start work at 830 so it's just as well to go to bed earlier as there's no sleeping in for a few days

@Sapphiresun: lucky! E always wakes up now when we go out to run errands. And gets super fussy as a result. There may or may not have been screaming in Michael's today.
She hasn't found my bra straps yet, but she does like to dig her baby nails into my boob. She also grabs onto my hair and necklace and won't let go ;).
@Grace: not me on the bf'ing cover, I think that was Delight :). And ha, I can only imagine how freaky it would be to have it reset and swoop the room with its big glowing eyeball.
Thanks :). And yay for sleep!
@Alivoo01: Thanks! I do feel better now, and no recurrence this morning.
@MrsB2012: I've never heard of purple crying, I'll have to look into it. E has been very fussy the last couple of days. We get the happy laughs and coos and smiles, and then all of a sudden -- unhappy!

Catch up time!
Things have been pretty busy since I've been back to work, not a lot of time for anything. I take her with me and that's kind of nice, except when I can't set her down, then it stinks. Oh and then there's the part where she will not take a bottle or pacifier from me, others can give them to her, so I have to bf at work
Today has been a no nap stuck to my boob kinda day, I'd love to get her to sleep. Swaddling hasn't worked, sleep sack hasn't worked, nor has just a swaddle blanket. At least she's been smiley and laughing when she comes up for air.
The other day I was commenting on a thread about not rolling over yet, she hadn't. I decided to put her down for some tummy time and low and behold she rolled over! Now to work on sttn in her own bed. We've started a nasty habit of sleeping in between Mommy and Daddy, I know it isn't going to end well. It is nice to get a few hours of sleep though.

@MrsB2012: We have the same napping child, I think! The only real nap she will take is the morning one amd I strongly suspect it's because I convince her that it's not daytime yet.

@delight: Oh my gosh, those little dukes up are so cute.
@Grace: That growth spurt is a killer, but the sleep must feel awesome.
@MrsB2012: It's my goal to get N to bed earlier as well. She naps in the early evening, because I like to think that going to bed at 7 or 8 is actually "bedtime" and hope she'll actually sleep a stretch, but she wakes up around 11, and then stays up until almost 1am before she goes to bed for the night. I hate when people ask me what time she goes down for the night, and then get that judgey face when I say 1am.
@StbHisMrs: So nice that your work lets you bring her with you. I have a hard time getting N to sleep in her own bed as well. My husband works really long days so he sleeps in the guest room so I don't wake him up all night getting up, so it just became easier for her to sleep in the bed with me. I knew it was going to be a nightmare to break the habit later, but it was survival mode when I started it. Good for her on the rolling over though!
As for us, N still is terrible at tummy time. I'm starting to get a little nervous about it. Her neck is strong because I spend a lot of time at least making her support her own head when she's being held. But she still spends tummy time either falling asleep or crying but not lifting anything or attempting to roll over. She's 11.5 weeks now and has only ever rolled over once in bed 4 weeks ago, and I'm pretty sure that was just accidental. And if she starts crying on tummy time, it's not like you just flip her back and she stops. If she gets upset about it, it'll take me 30 minutes to calm her again, so I do tend to save that activity for when I have the energy for a meltdown... Anybody else still really struggling with tummy time?
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@Sapphiresun: DS did this last night!! I normally put him to bed around 9pm or later and he'll wake up every 3 hours to feed but go back to sleep. However, since starting daycare he's been sleepy earlier so I put him to bed at 8. He woke up at 1:30 to feed (woohoo for fluke long stretch of sleep), but decided to stay awake all together until 3am. Then he just laid in bed and cried and cried and cried till I picked him up. Sigh.
As for tummy time, DS isn't a fan either. He'll just lay there or go to sleep also, and doesn't show signs of rolling over. He rolled over once when he was just a few weeks old. He'll be 14 weeks this Friday. I should ask daycare if he's more active there or is showing more signs of rolling!
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
@Sapphiresun: You know, it's a double-edged sword. If N went to bed at 8, she might be up to eat at 2. Your way you might get your longest stretch of sleep in the middle of the night.
nectarine / 2466 posts
@Sapphiresun: Ah, don't let the judgie people get to you. It must be nice to have a few hours in the evening while babe sleeps. Eventually maybe try and put her down at 1245 then 1230 etc until she just gets up for a snack and then goes back to bed. I've found that's the easiest thing with B is just gradually making the time a little earlier.
B used to love tummy time, now she tolerates it for a brief stay and then fusses. I'm not too worried. She rolled over quite a few times when she was a NB like at 1 week.. now she hasn't rolled over in forever. They'll get there. Spending time on your chest counts as tummy time too, so if she likes that, then just do that.
I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this.. I was looking through my beside dresser and I found my pregnancy test from B. I don't know what to do with it. When I was first pregnant I didn't want to throw it out and jinx anything.. then I just kind of kept on that thought.. "if I throw it away, it's like I'm throwing away my baby.." haha Now I have my baby in my arms and I still can't bring myself to throw it out. I threw out all my internet cheapies but have my FRER. Anyone else a little crazy like me? haha
PS I got the new iphone 5s.. the camera on that thing is amazing! The pictures are so clear! I love it! I've taken like 20 pics of B in 2 days haha
nectarine / 2530 posts
@Sapphiresun: We have the exact same sleep schedule, so no worries! 'Nap' at 7/8, up at 11 and then she stays up until midnight or 1am. It's not forever; in fact, I have a feeling that I'll start enforcing going to sleep earlier now that I'm going back to work and don't have the luxury of rolling back into bed.
E also hates tummy time. I put her on her tummy and she typically cries. Am I supposed to leave her there crying until she gets frustrated enough that she rolls over? She hasn't rolled over yet, and she's 11 weeks old. I'm not really that concerned because her head control is pretty good. She even does 'baby crunches' now!
And she's started swiveling her head to see the tv. Argh.
@MrsB2012: take a picture of the FRER? that's what I did with mine. Granted, I had about twenty of them *cough*.
And ooh, I want the 5S! Just not sure if I want to spend the money on it when my 4S is perfectly fine (not up for renewal until December anyway). What color did you get? I'm not usually a gold person, but I'm really digging that color.

@MrsB2012: so funny about the test. I didn't keep mine but have pictures of all 10 tests I took... They don't even talk to you until you're 12 weeks here so I tested a LOT to make sure it was still positive. I've debated whether it's cool or gross to put a photo of it in our "yearbook" that I usually make but it's probably safe to toss the actual test. And I'm kind of morbidly curious if a year old pee stick wouldn't be like seriously smelly by now?
@StrawberryBee: I'm glad someone else has the same crazy schedule. I'm off for a year so I don't have a major motivation to make sure we're good to go in the mornin for the day but just wonder if her rockstar sleep schedule is the best thing for her.
And mine watches tv too.

@Sapphiresun: I'm voting for cool :). Don't worry, I'm sure their schedules will work out in time. I'm curious to see if she'll sttn tonight; we're on a three day streak.
And I forgot to mention that e and I went to home goods today, and I finally found the perfect rug for her room! It's the right shade of pink and super plush and machine washable (a must with five animals and an allergic husband). It actually made it through the washer and dryer great. I'm hoping she likes tummy time a little better now that she has three layers between her and the laminate floor.

L is distracted by the tv and loves to watch it. I feel like a bad mom sometimes but she really likes sitting on our lap and watching it. Especially Jeopardy! I think the blue screen engages her. She gets distracted when feeding too and lately she'll just stop eating and look up and coo/smile at me. I LOVE it. Except at bedtime when she should be falling asleep.
Are any if the babes out there grasping toys or swatting at the toys over their playmat? L isn't quite there yet at 10 weeks. She loves when I show her toys and follows them well with her eyes but she hasn't tried to purposefully grab, hold or touch them. I can't wait for her to "play" with toys and also to hear her laugh.
