I'll be able to take 16 weeks unpaid except my saved up leave which won't be much since I just started this job last January. We'll be okay without the pay, but it'll be tight especially with two in daycare after
@sunnday Our center doesn't take infants until 6 weeks and I think the ratio is 4:1. I think this topic is fascinated too. I do public health policy research and while this isn't my area, I'd love to really dig into it!

Venting about my "fun" afternoon.
Baby doc appointment at 4 p.m yesterday., I was anxious for this appointment since anatomy scan on the 11th (tech told me nothing, had an internal and never had one before this late). I arrive to appt at 3:42 (lol) and check in with reception. There are two receptionists there and one I love, the other is a bit of a dolt. Dolt put person on phone on hold to take my name and asked me to go sit. 4:15 rolls around and my doc is usually pretty on time, nurse comes to waiting room to get a patient and says "you are here, did you not check in?" Both receptionists look at me and an dolt was like "oh right, sorry". Ugh! So anyways, in I go. I had called after anatomy scan asking when results come in could I be called for a quick one liner "everything looks good" ahead of waiting until today. Never got a call, tried to have faith everything was okay. Doc comes in with me and looks onto computer and says anatomy scan results were never received. She leaves right away to get someone "on it" and carries on with our appt. found baby's HB quick and easy this time, had a good check in. She leaves while we wait for results to come in and turns out the internal was just to see where my placenta was as they couldn't see from regular ultrasound. Fine! Why can't the tech just say "I need to get a better look where your placenta is". It's not an answer or "result", but that simple line could keep someone a heck of a lot more calm! Baby has a "choroid plexus cyst" on her brain, doc said if any IPS testing had come back with any markers, plus this cyst it may be cause for concern, but on its own, hopefully it will self resolve by the time baby arrives. Anything Google says is positive, however it's all just still annoying how it all came through and still just learning there's a cyst of any kind on your growing baby is just something you can't help but think about. So anyways, doing another ultrasound Sept 12 (at my regular awesome u/s place, lol) to see if any progress on cyst.
Also, from my appointment, my belly button a hernia, I'm not even sure I am wording that correctly, she said we'll have to be careful as my intestines could be poking through that gap. I had my IUD surgically removed from just below there eons ago and it healed really badly, so it sounds like I am going to need some cosmetic work on my tummy when babies are all said and done....lovely!

@emilye519: Glad you are able to take 16 weeks. 4:1 ratio makes me feel like I'm not a good parent, lol. I so could not handle that!

@IRunForFun @sunnyday: Don't feel guilty, feel lucky! The more ladies in positions to advocate how positive having that time off, the better.
@sunnyday: I'm sorry yesterday was so crummy. Nothing is more frustrating than bad doctor visits that could totally be prevented! I'd never heard of a choroid plexus cyst before but work in an academic setting with access to the most up to date medical journals, so I did some research for you and agree that the outcome is almost always positive.

@babypugs: Thank-you!! I really....really appreciate the lookup on that! I work at a university and didn't even think to access journals!

@emilye519: I totally feel you! We will juuuuust get by, but it's gonna be a tough year to be without 3 months of pay, and then to add onto DD1's current daycare schedule AND put DD2 in at some point too... I'm going to try to stock pile diapers and supplies this year so I buy as little as possible next year!
@sunnyday: I am sorry your appt was so stressful and people weren't more helpful! And I hope for the most positive outcome too

Our daycare provider told us we can't to PT with my DS once I am off, because she has another Mom on mat leave, it's not business smart for her, so we either have to stay FT or pull him. Debating what we'll do, but I think pull him, but then find a nursery school or something a few mornings a week. Going to keep him FT the first few weeks and then have him home.

@babypugs: I am so sorry. That is a crummy afternoon. So glad that the choroid plexus cyst usually resolves itself. I had to have an internal this time, first ever, to get a better measurement of how close my placenta is to my cervix. I can't believe the tech didn't explain that to you.

@sunnyday: Sorry about the appointment. I asked about some minor pain around my belly button as well and was told it was a small hernia. They didn't mention any problems though.
For my maternity leave, I am really lucky. My branch of the military changed maternity leave to 84 days (12 weeks) from 42 days (6 weeks) last summer. I will also be able to take leave in addition. I probably won't because I am due to start a new assignment in late December/early January and I don't want to delay my start too much. Besides, our normal rotations occur during summer so there will be fewer people there. I also need to take vacation time for my ILs 50th anniversary.

@sunnyday: My anatomy scan showed a choroid plexus cyst too. My doc said that if these cysts were in more than one area (so also in heart and/or gut) it would be considered soft markers, but one finding is considered completely normal and no follow up is necessary as the cyst is actually a part of development and therefore would be gone in a subsequent ultrasound. She said that paired with my SIPS results she could almost guarantee babe was chromosomally normal.
So I'm not panicked…but will live vicariously through you at your follow up ultrasound;)

I know I'm super late joining you guys, but I'm a worry wart and wanted to wait until after my anatomy scan to say hi. Had that yesterday and everything looked good, so I'm happy to join the January Due Date club :). Also according to my ultrasound yesterday I will be having another little girl.
Location: Canada
EDD: 1/28/17
How far along: 18 weeks 5 days
First child? Second
First doctor appointment: My next appointment is in 2 weeks!
Any symptoms so far?: Luckily out of the first trimester which was tough with a two year old. Feeling pretty good at almost 20 weeks.
Who have you told?: Anyone I speak to on a regular basis. I'm not a big Facebook or social media user so I won't be announcing beyond what I've done.

@afishermanswife: everything I have heard is positive/like what you said. Glad hearing something like "brain" and "cyst" has really turned out to be nothing but positive. The worst I read was 1-2% of babies have them, then 1-2% of those babies actually have problems, the rest self resolve. So there's "a chance" but overall seems positive. I am hoping for a much better u/s experience and hopefully no exciting news from the next one!

@sunnyday: So sorry about the frustrating appointment! I have heard a choroid plexus cysts before and like everyone else have heard they're common and typically resolve. Sorry if it caused you any extra anxiety!!
@Peasinapod: Welcome and congrats!!
I had my 20 week prenatal appointment today. The midwife said she reviewed the report from the anatomy scan and everything looked great and right on track. However, she was concerned that I haven't gained any weight at all in 6 weeks and I started on the lower end of the BMI scale. (I did gain between 5 and 6 pounds in the first tri.) I'm supposed to try to eat higher calorie foods, nuts, full fat dairy, avocados, etc. I really think it is due to stress so we are also talking about switching up my anxiety meds again.
Oh, and apparently because of my blood clotting disorder and the fact I'm on blood thinners I will be getting scans at MFM periodically. They hadn't mentioned that before, but I'm fine with it. I get to see baby more!!!

@Peasinapod: Welcome
I had my anatomy scan today. The technician didn't say anything negative, but I won't hear anything official until my next appointment in six weeks. I assume that if there is anything wrong, they will give me a call. We stayed Team Green and will find out in January. Baby is 12 ounces and measuring a little behind. I am 20+3, baby measured at 19+6.

@Peasinapod: yay! welcome and congrats! glad you are joining us!
@IRunForFun: eat eat eat! and yes to seeing baby more!
@Mrs. Toad: ugh I kinda hate when there are just zero comments and you don't really know what to think!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@IRunForFun: I wouldn't worry about not gaining weight. Baby is growing so that is all that matters. But on the other hand if that gives you free range to eat more avocado's go for it! Or you can just have some of the weight I am gaining.
@Mrs. Toad: no comments would bug me!
Ultrasound went better this morning. They got all the shots they needed. Doctor said we have a beautiful, picture perfect baby. I had the tech look and it looks like my placenta has moved up some. They said they could do the vaginal ultrasound and measure if I didn't want to have to come back. But I said I would feel better waiting till 27 weeks to make sure it is higher. Plus this way we can bring LO so she can see the baby.
persimmon / 1095 posts
@snowjewelz: @Smurfette: I did get the general comment that everything looked okay, but nothing specific. They did get all the pictures that they needed, even with some issues setting the heart (shadows from the ribs).
Glad you both have gotten all the pictures you need.
@IRunForFun: Enjoy all the food. I haven't gained much either, but the baby is doing well.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@Smurfette: I was worried, and then I thought if the midwife wasn't concerned I'd forget about it, and then she was concerned. I think mainly because I've been underweight before and started out pretty small. But hopefully things can move in the right direction! At least I'm not losing I guess? I need to make some guacamole!! Glad to hear baby looks perfect!!!
@Mrs. Toad: That's good that they at least said things looked good and they got all the photos. That is pretty much how the tech at my scan was. Didn't say much - actually didn't even say everything looked good. But 2 weeks later at my appt I got the all clear, I'm sure it'll be same for you!!
persimmon / 1095 posts
@IRunForFun: I'm not concerned. If anything is bad, they won't want to wait until mid October for my next appointment to tell me. Therefore, my assumption is no news is good news.
clementine / 770 posts
@IRunForFun: with my first I was really slow to gain weight. My ob didn't seem to care about weight gain it was my stomach measurements that worried her near the end. I had so many ultrasounds because my stomach measured small but baby was always the right size! I think some people just carry babies differently. It's the same for me where I started out pretty slim .
This time around I've gone with a midwife and she's actually left it up to me if I want to track my weight gain. She said normally it's not a very accurate predictor of how baby is growing.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Peasinapod: It's totally not! I gained "too much" weight last time (30+ lbs) but DD came out only 6 lbs 4 oz when they thought she was like 7+.

I had a regular check up appointment (19w1d) today and it was great to hear that little heartbeat! I'm SO READY for our anatomy scan in two weeks! I'm traveling for work this week and my husband next week, so hopefully that makes the time fly!

It's crazy how weight gain can differ so greatly and typically not really have an impact on baby/baby size. Everyone grows and measures so differently. 30lbs difference in my weight gain with #1 and #2 and only a 2oz birth weight difference between them. I am currently on track for the 30lbs heavier option with #3, lol...uh oh
Another wrench over here.....my DS has roseola, so dealt with nocturnal fever (and awake/restless awfulness) of like 103.1 to 103.5 Thur/Fri/Sat nights, then I got sick and was awake most of Sunday night, got some sleep last night . Daycare obviously didn't want him this morning and doctor said I needed bloodwork just in case for baby. Greater risks if I was in first tri, but still. Might need them to add additional look to something (I wasn't sure what but another ultrasound mentioned) that can be added on to my one already booked on the 12th to look at that cyst! Oye. I am home sick with my DS today and tomorrow (working from home pretty decently) and my DH will likely take Thursday.
Hope everyone had a good weekend, and any Mom's that had first days of school to go through today (my DD started JK!) you survived okay
pomelo / 5509 posts
@Peasinapod: I'm seeing a midwife as well. I'm guessing that her concern was more because I also said I wasn't able to eat much AND not gaining weight. I have bad anxiety and my meds got switched up on me right after the first tri and it totally took away my appetite.
@madger: You're a runner, right? When you exercise do you get round ligament pain? I'm trying to start back into a little more rigorous exercise than walking but get the worst RLP. It was really bad yesterday after a workout Sunday. Do you wear a support band at all when running?
@sunnyday: Ugh so sorry about the illness. That totally sucks! Hope you and DS feel better ASAP and that whatever test you need proves its nothing to worry about.
I just got the call scheduling my first ultrasound with maternal fetal medicine 2 weeks from tomorrow, so I'll be a little over 22 weeks. Excited to get to see baby again! I'm at the point where I'm feeling movement but it's not super consistent so I get a little worried if I don't feel it as much on a given day.
cherry / 178 posts
@IRunForFun: I don't currently, I did later in my pregnancy with my first. I ran with a belt starting around 24 weeks last time, and i'll pull it out sooner this time since I'm bigger earlier!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@sunnyday: Hope everyone is feeling better soon!
@IRunForFun: I used to press on my belly with LO all the time and DH would get so mad. But it would make her move. Since I started feeling this one, I don't seem to have this problem. Or I just lay flat down on my back and then I feel her right away.
I had an OB appointment this morning. Nothing exciting, they did a swap cause I think my GBS infection is back. Super fun times. She asked me if I was feeling the baby. I laughed said, Oh yes. She kept me up the other night, she was doing gymnastics in there.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@madger: I love anatomy scan too. I'm like no problem take your time I love having extended time to check out the baby!
@sunnyday: Stay healthy over there!!
Baby girl moves around sooo much it's nuts. I think she gets much more action as I move around so much more and there's so much more noise (mainly from DD1).
clementine / 770 posts
I have an anterior placenta this time so I'm not feeling nearly as much as with dd1. But that might be a good thing as I was very uncomfortable with the amount she moved.
I also am a runner! But haven't at all this pregnancy. Even too much walking causes me to feel pretty sore from RLP. I hadn't really considered a support band, do they actually make a big difference ? I was so much more active with my first pregnancy
pomelo / 5509 posts
@Smurfette: Oh I didn't realize GBS infections actually have symptoms? I've had like 4 yeast infections so far this pregnancy, it sucks!! With movement I usually feel baby in the morning before getting out of bed and then when I lay down at night, but since this is my first sometimes I feel like I'm not even 100% sure it's movement. I mean I think it must be but I still question it.
@Peasinapod: Yeah, I ran only for like the first 7 or 8 weeks of pregnancy and then stopped because of first tri ickiness. I tried to start up again around 11 or 12 weeks and it's just never been comfortable. I get bad ligament pain and it kills my bladder. I've been walking a lot but yeah, if I do too much of that I still get ligament pain. I've been hoping to at least incorporate some jogging intervals into my walks and have had good things about support belts from other running friends...deciding if it's worth the investment...Oh and I also have an anterior placenta!!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@IRunForFun: Well I am assuming it it that again. TMI, sometimes my discharge has a green tint. So the doctor said that it could still be lingering, or it could be something else. I guess I will just wait till they call me. I didn't have any symptoms before when I had two rounds of antibiotics.

@Smurfette: for some reason my daughter can do no wrong in my eyes. But this means when I'm having a tough time with her I suppress it until I see an adult I can take it out on... Not the best for my husband who gets a lot of out bursts over things which shouldn't result in outbursts ...

@Peasinapod: Yes. I've wanted to murder by husband many times by now. Sometimes it's valid but like the other night I really hated a noise he made when he was eating. And I have way less patience for the general public.

@Peasinapod: Short tempered yes. I feel my ups and downs are much more drastic these days, which may definitely be a bigger mental health thing versus blaming pregnancy. Some days I work through very easily and other nights I feel like I just can't snap out, gah! I say this knowing I need to sleep, yet here I am awake to try to push back bedtime to avoid 3 a.m. insomnia......insanity!
