July 2014 Mamas!

I got my glucose test results back yesterday and I failed BIG TIME. I should have been under 130 but came back at 179. I had a major freak out and spent most of the afternoon imagining worst case scenarios, but I was able to calm myself down today. Now I go in tomorrow morning for the 3 hour test. Really not looking forward to fasting that long -- thankfully, DH is tagging along to keep me company (and take me out to lunch!). I know that having GD isn't the end of the world, but I already feel like a failure. I have zero risk factors so I can't help but blame it on something I've done wrong/haven't done right. I guess I'll find out soon enough if all my worrying is warranted or I'm just crazy!

@HLK208: Sorry you're having to go through this! My doctor's office said 2 of my numbers would have to be out of range to be diagnosed with GD. I know different offices have different policies, but that seems pretty strict. Sorry again!

@BlueberryPie: good luck with your 3 hour! I didn't realize that fasting meant no tums. I live off of tums! So I think my numbers might have been thrown off because I took them? The second ingredient is sugar.

@BlueberryPie: sorry you're dealing with this, but absolutely don't feel like a failure! Gestational diabetes and the people diagnosed with it have never made sense to me- I have a crazy amount of people on my moms side with diabetes, and my bmi puts me as overweight, and I somehow managed not to get it. My sister in law is petite, has no family history, and was super healthy throughout her whole first pregnancy, and she did end up having GD. She wound up gaining 25 pounds, and had a perfect 7 lb little girl.
Getting GD really doesn't mean you've done something wrong or that you're unhealthy or anything- it's just hormones being wacky for some and not for others.

Obviously it still sucks, I just don't want you to feel responsible or anything, because I really don't think it works that way.

@HLK208: man how frustrating to get a borderline score!

@BlueberryPie: don't feel like a failure at all!! I really was shocked I passed it with how much bad stuff I've been eating. Good luck with your 3hr test!

@HLK208: Thanks! I hear you on the tums -- as soon as I drank the glucose liquid down this morning, my heartburn started raging. I have been dreaming of a tums ever since!

@lauraeabel: @runnerd: Thanks ladies! I think my hormones are getting the best of me and causing me to overreact to the situation. I know it can happen to anyone -- I guess I was just blindsided by it. We're in the final hour now and then I can get out of here and eat something!!! Thanks again for being awesome and supportive

@littleredhairedgrl: So happy you're in the 3rd trimester now!

Strangely enough I got my glucose test on a Friday and a call from the nurse that Monday morning saying I passed. They usually take *weeks* for blood work so I was surprised at the quick turnaround! Had an appt today -- 29w1d and measuring 30 wks, which isn't surprising since I've been measuring a little ahead the whole time. Starting appointments every 2 weeks -- seems crazy we are getting so close to meeting our LOs!

I passed my glucose screening and found out at my appt last Thursday. For those that "failed" it -- don't feel bad or like it's your fault! My midwife said on Thursday that she is often really surprised by who ends up with gestational diabetes and who doesn't (and probably, rightly should) end up with it. She said some of the skinniest, healthiest looking 18 year olds sometimes get it. It's just such a crap shoot. Also, I thought this was interesting -- she told me that she expects the diagnostic procedure I had (just blood work that they tested somehow -- not even sure how) will become more standard over the next few years instead of the glucose drink. She said they just need to do more diagnostics and studies with it. She told me she wouldn't want her kids drinking the glucose drink so she feels bad making patients do it (unless, like me, they opt out) but that it's just such a crap shoot who will have GD so it's the recommendation for everyone, including those with low or no risk factors.

I'm at 29+4 over here and excited to hit the 30 week mark this weekend. Baby girl is active as ever! I'm really big into herbs and just started my herbal tinctures that I took often with my son. I credit them to helping me have little to no swelling or pain through the end of the pregnancy (and I went 5 days overdue) with DS. It's a blend of oat straw, nettle, red raspberry leaf, and peppermint that I drink twice a day at this point. I was excited to start drinking it at 28 weeks because that meant that we are getting that much closer to meeting these sweet July babes!

@coopsmama: I'd love a no-drink gd test to be implemented! I passed my gd test too and was way under the numbers and almost wish I opted out. hated to have to subject my girl to so much sugar! (not to mention how gross it was!) what does the tincture do besides minimize swelling?

  10. NorCalWayfarer

    nectarine / 2134 posts

@coopsmama: I'm hoping they'll have a new diagnostic test for GD by the time I get pregnant with LO #2 -- that glucose drink made me feel *awful* afterwards. Where did you get the herbal tinctures from and how did you know what combo to use? I'd love something to help with my swelling

@HLK208: Bummer on being borderline, did not know that about tums!

@BlueberryPie: I'm late to this convo so I'm glad you're all done with the testing! Sorry about the results, it's so random who gets it!

I'm super nervous about my test because I have not been eating well, hello Easter candy! I have mine this coming Thursday and the worst part of me is having my blood drawn. Ugh.

That's awesome that so many of you passed and that the third trimester is upon us! My due date is end of July so I always hit these milestones a few weeks after most of you, which means I always know what's coming up next!

We had our Newborns 101 Class this past Monday and my hubby changed his first diaper ever, on a doll, yay!

How is everyone doing? Is anybody else sort of freaking out because I am. I cannot believe July is nearly two months away. It seems like yesterday I was getting my first u/s and saw that tiny little blob on the screen...

    cherry / 105 posts

Well I got my 3 hour test results back earlier this week, and all my numbers were great! I'm super happy about the results, but a little frustrated with the testing itself -- the 1 hour seems so inconsistent and can cause so much worry. Thank you again to everyone for all your support!!!

@MK0180: I also can't believe how quickly July is approaching! Everything is becoming much more "real" and I feel like we're running out of time to prepare. It seems that as I check one item off our to-do list, I add ten more!

  14. NorCalWayfarer

    nectarine / 2134 posts

    @BlueberryPie: Good to hear!

@MK0180: Yes! I totally had my first freak out at 28 weeks bc we'd done NOTHING on the nursery yet and two of my friends had their babies a week early that week. But now we're making progress on the nursery, going to a birthing class this weekend, and getting shower invites sent out this week. Definitely feeling like it's getting "real" and that this baby will be here before we know it (10 more weeks, not that I'm counting )! Also, totally NOT looking forward to being 9 months pregnant in the July heat -- it's already in the 90s here this week

@BlueberryPie: Yay for passing! Great news! Also glad I'm not the only one with a million things to do - really thought I had a lot more time. Guess not...?

@NorCalWayfarer: We still don't have anything done with the nursery aside from moving things around. Hopefully painting this weekend or next. Maybe get the furniture - that wouldn't be a bad idea

BUT I cannot wait to meet the little man who loves to kick my ribs. 70 days to go (I dont countdown either - ) Hard to believe

    @BlueberryPie: yay! That's great news.

@MK0180: YES. All of my appointments are scheduled until I deliver

Yesterday, I walked a hilly two miles with the stroller and DS rode his bike (so I was either trying to keep up with him or helping him with the hills). I came home and had BH contractions that were super painful. They lasted 30-45 seconds and came every 3-4 minutes. UGH. I wanted to cry. I did cry actually. DH was at work so I still had to make the kids dinner and get them to bed...I seriously moaned the entire time. I drank water, laid on my left side but they were still coming hard and fast so I took a bath and all was good again.

Of course today, I have insane, low pressure (all normal) but just that walk totally pushed me over the edge.

    How is everyone else doing?

@blueberrypie congrats on passing, that's awesome!

@MK0180: time is flying, and we have so much to do! Between birthing classes and two week appointments starting, everything's starting to move really quickly. We are trying not to mess with the nursery until after our shower on the 27th, but I'm having a really hard time with it- I feel like by that point theres almost no time left!

@HLK208: sorry about the Braxton hicks =( that doesn't sound fun at all, especially with chasing after kiddos!

  18. Mrs. Cookie

    blogger / persimmon / 1225 posts

@HLK208: OH man, sorry to hear about your painful BH contractions!!

I also feel WAY WAY behind on everything, probably cause we still don't close on our house until the 8th! Can't wait to start on the nursery though!

I had my glucose test today but won't find out the results until Monday because they send the lab stuff out to KC. Really? there are no labs adequate in the Twin Cities?? haha OK whatever. But I'm in Chicago all weekend and I have my first shower and my maternity photo shoot so I'm not gonna think about it!

  19. littleredhairedgrl

    persimmon / 1135 posts

@HLK208: sorry about the bh contractions! maybe it was just your body's way of telling you it was tired and needed a rest. I noticed that the other day when I went to my dr appt I walked a little more than usual and when I got home I had more bh contractions. lying back down and drinking a lot of water helped me.

so glad to be at 29wk1d today! cervix still staying stable (tho very short) and just got a call from my OB saying that the ffn test we took on Wednesday came back negative! so were good for another 2 weeks which means my mini shower next weekend should go smoothly dh is also scheduling an at home mani/pedi for me so I can actually look presentable for the shower

can't believe we're all getting so close!

@HLK208: YES! I'm afraid he's going to bust out of my stomach like Alien! Hahah. Really not sure how he's going to make it another 9 weeks... I'm pretty sure he's trying to escape.

    kiwi / 545 posts

@HLK208: Yes! When he's up and wide awake he rolls all over the place and then kicks the ribs. A lot. It's pretty cool and freaky to see my stomach doing waves. I also get lightning crotch from time to time. That hurts!

  25. cookiemomster

    kiwi / 714 posts

@HLK208: yep! she's started having nightly dance parties, usually at 11 when I'm trying to sleep. She also enjoys kicking my bladder and occasionally my ribs, soooo that's been a good time. We saw Spider-Man 2 a few days ago and she was rolling around the entire time, which was very neat.

Anyone else started childbirth classes? We had our first or four last night, and all the stuff she went over was stuff I'd already learned about on HB!

@lauraeabel: We did a half-day yoga and massage for labor class this weekend. Our midwife said we didn't need to take the "traditional" class offered by the hospital and could just talk to her about the birth during our regular appointments. I also am pre-reading "The Birth Partner" and flagging relevant portions for DH to read (he won't read the entire thing). I'm thinking we'll probably also do an online video like BabyCenter (which is free) or The Best Birth (I read the book and hopefully DH will read the dad-relevant portions too).

I'm also signed up to take a breastfeeding class through our hospital.

    I'm playing catch-up!

    @BlueberryPie: yay for passing!!

@MK0180: May has made things seem real FOR SURE!

@princessandthebee: yea it always seems weird to me that a lab 5+hours away does my test results when there are bigger cities closer.

@littleredhairedgrl: woo, glad things are staying stable! that's so cool they have that test to predict labor, never had heard of it until you mentioned it.

@HLK208: LO's movement has really changed over the past week. I'm seeing it from the outside more too, and sometimes when I push on a spot I see moving he pushes back. that is so cool, and makes me feel like we are playing with each other lol

@lauraeabel: we decided to skip birth classes, and instead I've been doing lots of Google and YouTube research. May order a childbirth DVD as well.

@runnerd: Movement has totally changed in the last week for me too -- he's SO active now and I can totally feel him stretching out. It's so crazy.

Hey ladies - I have a question. I've been having mild cramps in lower abdomen the past few days. Is this normal for this time in pregnancy? It's a little worse this morning, and I definitely haven't had enough water today, so I am gonna drink a ton and see if that helps. Just wondering what y'all's experience has been!

And along the same lines, as soon as I hit 29 weeks, it's like a switch flipped and I feel bad in general - sleep is worse, carpal tunnel is getting horrible, feet swelling has started, tired and achy! Blah.

  31. HLK208

    pineapple / 12234 posts

@runnerd: I had cramping with my last pregnancy and my doctor said they were Braxton Hicks. He told me to take it easy, lay on my left side and put my feet up. I was sure I would go early but then I had to be induced at 40 weeks

I'm also feeling very BLAH and totally done. I'm tired, achy and for some odd reason I feel like I'm going to pass out often.

I just switched doctors at my 28 week appt. so glad I did! My first LO who is 18 months old was IUGR. At my 20 week, I asked the doctor what her plan would be to monitor this one for the same issues and she said that she would only go by fundal height- but my fundal height didn't tip anyone off to problems the last time! I wasn't happy, so I switched back to my old doctor who doesn't do deliveries anymore but said she would accept me for the prenatal care portion. She's already got me scheduled to go in for a growth scan ultrasound just to make sure everything is progressing right.

Also passed my glucose test but they said I'm Anemic.

@runnerd: Happy Mother's Day to you as well! I hope you've had a great day.

I am so bad about posting and staying updated in this thread. Life seems to be going way too fast. I can't believe I'm 8 weeks away from the due date - what?!?

Anyways, just the norm over here. Today was a great day and DH took care of DS this morning so I could sleep in. On the pregnancy front -- has anyone been struggling with pregnancy insomnia?! I never had this with my first pregnancy but this go around, if I wake up in the night at all (minus quick pee trips :)) I'm pretty much awake for several hours. It's driving me crazy and I've been feeling so tired because of it. I know there are definitely worse things on the pregnancy front that could happen so I'm not complaining TOO much... but maybe just a little.

I bought some more sleepers for Marlowe today so we have covered for the newborn and 3 month sizes at this point, I think. I have a shower coming up in June that some ladies at our church are throwing us, which is sweet, but since it's a second baby I'm not expecting anything too major so am enjoying shopping a bit myself. Even DH got in the spirit of things and picked out a girly sleeper for our girl! I want to order some headbands this week. Does anyone else have a shower coming up soon?

Anyway, random post. But just some thoughts running through my mind.

    Hi guys,

Also sorry for being MIA lately. Have been somewhat occupied with travel back and forth to Ireland to visit the family, plus we took a fab last break in France a few weeks back - a very nice last holiday for just the two of us!

It's hitting 40 degrees celcius here most days, which is a little more difficult to deal with when you can't see your toes anymore!! Plus baby seems determined to bruise every square inch of my insides

All seems to be going well. Passed the glucose and urine tests recently, baby and mum appear to be growing and gaining weight at an appropriate speed.

Had initially been diagnosed with a low-lying placenta, which appears to have completely resolved itself. Plus we have managed to remain team green thus far - no mean feat here as the cultural norm is very much to find out. The ultrasound technician and our OB get quite a kick out of our repeated requests not to be told!

Have been somewhat in denial about how fast time is moving, and I have yet to buy a single item for the baba. We have been very fortunate in recent weeks though as we have been given next to new hand me downs of a cot/ crib, dresser, buggy/stroller combo with bassinet and car seat, a baby carrier, and a moses basket... plus a load of never worn onsies which is fab! We'll barely need to spend a cent - which suits me fine as the kid will grow out of most of the stuff so quickly. The expat community here has been very generous and supportive, which has been lovely as it is hard sometimes to be far away from family and friends.

I am trying hard to keep myself as healthy as possible - which is a challenge when some days the most I want to do is shovel a bowl of cereal down before collapsing into bed! Have been walking, swimming and doing squats 4 or 5 days out of 7 since hitting the third trimester, which I hope to keep up. It's likely a cultural thing, but my Ob was horrified to hear I was swimming!, as she is paranoid about the risk of infection... I gently told her I planned to keep it up and that the pool at our school is maintained to very high standards - interesting though!

Anyway, that's enough of an essay for now. I've caught up on this thread in the past few days - thrilled to hear how everyone is getting on. Now that it's all starting to feel so real I know I'll be in and out a lot more.

@runnerd: Happy mothers day to you too mommy to be! I'm with ya, feeling miserable most of the time. It really just got worse recently for me too.

I can barely stand for longer than 30 minutes without my feet killing me and my back is so sore, and my sleep is getting progressively worse.

    Update:
I passed my glucose test, such a relief! My low-lying placenta has moved out of the way (yay) and my fibroid is not causing any issues!

We worked on our new house all weekend and my body is literally hating on me today so I'm taking a day of rest before going back it. Exciting news, we have the changing table, crib, and glider all put together now and paint on the walls!

Love reading everyone's updates, keep em coming!

    Question for everyone about movement:

Am I the only person who doesn't have a heavy kicker on their hands? My anterior placenta made it so I had to wait extra long to feel anything and then only recently have others been able to feel him move through my belly.

I know every baby and every pregnancy is different but I can't relate to the comments about constant movement or painful kicks yet and it just makes me slightly nervous. I feel a lot of pressure in both my ribs and by my bladder when he is stretching out but very few somersault type movements.

Is my little guy just a calm, laid-back fellow? I don't worry when I don't feel him because he usually sticks to his movement routines and my OB said whatever is happening at 28 weeks is your new normal.

Just wondering if anyone else has a more mellow baby like me or if this is abnormal? FWIW I'm 29 weeks and 4 days.

@princessandthebee: I too have anterior placenta and sometimes can't feel too much, but other times feel a ton! your lo is also getting bigger and running out of space for big kicks so they're prob more mellow now. I know mine have been more mellow. tho I can always feel hiccups
