@msmini, @mrsdaredevil - it made me TERRIFIED when I was pregnant with DD but I just figured God wouldn't give me more than I could handle, you know? Plus, my dad was born in '56 and I don't think c-sections were much of an option then.

I do know one woman whose pelvis separated on one labour... *shudder* and she went on to have two more...

Daredevil- I get what you mean a bit better now- it just seemed, especially with your rant post as well yesterday, that your DH might have his own version of what's best for you. I absolutely agree you need someone to speak up for you during the labour- perhaps explaining to midwives/nurses/ whoevers appropriate early on, that you'd like to be told when it's the last safe opportunity to have an epi, and you'll decide then, but you'd love to go without and don't want to be badgered about it otherwise?

@Mrsdaredevil: The other day when I was having the trouble with feeling like I had to pee all the time even after I peed, I noticed that it also felt good when I was walking around to hold my tummy up by clasping my hands under my belly and lifting it up a bit. Who knows what was going on that day....must have been a weird baby position....but had that feeling continued I was going to get a pregnancy belt. Do you feel more comfortable when you lift up on the belly from below? Because, in my opinion, that is what a pregnancy belt would do. Maybe I'm wrong. I've also used a 'back belt' before when I had a really bad back trouble and it made me feel secure in ballet class. I think it's the same as a pregnancy belt...at least similar.

    Cloth diaper report:

Just got 3 more diapers today (which I buy whenever someone gives me money for baby). I am least impressed with the AMP diapers, as they don't seem to have many ways to get good adjustments, and they didn't even come with a soaker pad (which I knew when I bought them, but I was expecting a 'better' diaper considering that they are giving me less!).

I'm interested to see if I'll end up liking or hating the ones that additionally have elastic adjustments (Fuzzibuns and Charlie Banana)...it seems handy for changing the size of the leg holes. The others I have that I like are Bum Genius, and Happy Heiny's. The ones I don't like are the Kushies....they are all plastic-like and weird on the outside....and stiff and large.

With any shower money this weekend we're going to order Lil' Joeys to complete our newborn stash. (Now I just really hope the baby isn't too big for the newborn diapers.....we took a bit of a gamble with getting that size, but I just didn't feel good about putting oversize diapers on a tiny new baby).

@marriedandlovingit: Ouch. I get those too--the cervix stinging and contraction pains. And just starting getting carpal tunnel in the mornings with crazy hand/finger swelling. Ick.

    @aunt pol: pelvis SEPARATED? Ouch!!
And I get that you can't make your husband *force* anything. However, I seriously don't want an epidural. I told him, I would go for demerol, or a pudendal block, or general anesthesia over and epidural. It just depends on *why* you don't want an epi if you want to make sure your DH stands by that/respects that. I need him there not because I'll be changing my mind, but because the hospital may not "remember" or let me know about those other options when the time comes.
I really like your post, and I whole heartedly agree that you can't always stick with your birth plan, but an epi is not the only kind of pain relief that exists. I think many women act like the epi is the only option. Understand that DH can't "force" me to go all natural just because initially I thought I would want that, but I really do want him to make sure if I need some pain relief that is NOT an epi. No matter what.

@cvbee: I look forward to your cloth diaper report when baby is here you're doing all the hard work!!

@duckduckkristen: Bummer. my band size is usually a S or XS, so those sizes never fit me. I'm just all disproportionately big.

@winniebee: hahah. Darn those internets! I haven't even been reading up about anything recently though--other that your thread, and HB, I'm not reading any articles or books about pregnancy right now.
So glad to hear you can have the shower at your sister's! I hope it's awesome!
Your MIL's birth story is scary and awesome (in the frightening way). EEEK!

@volksgirl64: Yay for getting the nursery together!
    HE HAD TEETH!!! Ack!

@Nskillet: Congrats on picking your pediatrician! Let us know what the nutritionist says. Good luck!

Mrsdaredevil: "This is what my body was made for" Yes! I'm scared, but also... I maybe am a little weird. When I am in control of pain, I like it. I loved just having local for getting my wisdom teeth out. I like when I can really feel what is going on when I'm at a doctor's office--it helps me get through it. I think I would get anxious with an epi...
I want to move around, too!

@MsMini: Oh no! I 'm glad your contractions were relieved by resting again. Good luck and take it easy!

So... all kinds of "fun" pains today. Carpal tunnel in the morning (with hints of it while driving), abdominal pain, rib pain, BH pain. Oh my goodness. So "over" it, but also not ready!

  7. cvbee

    nectarine / 2039 posts

@pastemoo: carpal tunnel while driving eh? I get BH every time I drive. My weird symptom today: had some sight problems while teaching dance today....like, I saw weird bright spots....noticed first while taking attendance and I couldn't quite see my writing properly....then it got worse, but by the time I was done teaching it was over. Weird! (I was getting worried about not being able to drive!)

  8. pastemoo

    cantaloupe / 6146 posts

@cvbee: The carpal tunnel is mostly just in the night/morning and a strong burning numbness--during driving it's just a hassle that goes away if I keep switching which hand is on the wheel (I actually usually drive with both hands on the wheel so it's a little odd).
Huh? I get bright spots all the time. Yesterday, I got this eerie trailing white shadow behind anything that I saw moving. My clinic says you can get all kinds of issues with pregnancy that otherwise would really be disturbing.
Were you well hydrated during the class?

  9. cvbee

    nectarine / 2039 posts

@pastemoo: hmm, so you think it might be related to hydration? interesting. I didn't feel thirsty, but I actually didn't drink any of my water during the class, and plus, I am not very good about drinking enough water even though I have been trying to be better about it for pregnancy. (But it was just little kids today so it wasn't like I was working out or anything). Super strange, but so glad the vision came back to normal.
Every time I get a new pregnancy symptom/complaint I automatically think "oh no, I'm going to have to deal with this for the next ____ weeks". But most of the issues seem to be things that just pass, thankfully.

@pastemoo: a month and a half is a long time!

OB appointment update - According to their scale, I gained 7 lbs from my last appointment and am at 192. I wanted to cry. When I told my doctor that on my bathroom scale I've only gained 25 lbs and came in at 181 that morning, she said you can retain a lot of water during the day, which might account for some of it.
But, I've decided to keep track of what I'm eating each day to make me feel more accountable to eat healthy and avoid sweets.
It's definitely a "sad panda" kind of day - and the rainy, gloomy weather isn't helping.
In happier news, it looks like I've still got a girl growing inside me. She's currently head down and taking up all the available space. Pretty much every measurement showed her in the 95th percentile and she's already weighing in between 5 and 6 lbs. Crazy! But, being 5'11" and DH 6'6", I really wasn't expecting anything less.
The u/s tech wasn't able to find the band of tissue that they had seen on the 20 week u/s, so my OB says it's probably a non-issue at this point.
AND . . . she has hair - the u/s tech pointed it out to us. That was really strange.

  13. volksgirl64

@Goldilocks1107 - I have an appt. this afternoon and judging from my ankles last night (or lack there of) I am in for a rude awakening at weigh in. I think I need to either look into a low sodium diet or have my appts. first thing in the morning!

I get torn between not caring about weight (this will probably be our last so why not live it up a little) and worrying about it.

We took a long walk last night to get ice cream (I figure they balance each other out) and I thought I'd be in a lot of pain, back & ankles, but it really wasn't too bad! Maybe we can do that more often.

DD's party is this weekend and we have a lot of cleaning to do but it should be a fun time and after that it's just waiting until May!

  14. winniebee

    hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts

@Goldilocks1107: Their scales are always wrong, I swear!!! Keeping track of eating is a good idea, but try not to beat yourself up over it and go by how you look/feel. That's awesome news on your ultrasound - big baby! I'm not even a week behind you, and hoping for 4 lbs at my ultrasound next week! But then DH is 5'6 and I'm 5'2.

@volksgirl64: Have a blast at the party this weekend - is your daughter turning 2, or 3?

I'm also torn about the weight gain thing now that I'm basically totally immobile. Pre-bed rest, I'd gained 19 lbs. I feel like now I'm just going to pack it on. I previously had cut out a few snacks during the day (just wasn't as hungry) but I can really put away a meal. And last night, I was feeling sorry for myself so had a brownie and ice cream - normaly I wouldn't think twice about it, but those extra 600 calories are going to add up if I can't burn em off. DH just keeps telling me that I'll get off all the weight in no time and to keep feeding the baby.

  15. Goldilocks1107

    clementine / 878 posts

@winniebee: The OB was also 35 minutes late for our appointment. So DH and I were just sitting in the room stewing (and me beating myself up about the scale issue). By the time we were done, the receptionists were gone (because it was after 5pm) so we couldn't make our remaining appointments (2 bi-weeklies and then the weekly ones).
I'm hoping my food journal will help me avoid the cookies and treats that seem to magically appear around me. Might as well make those calories the most nutritious they can be!
But . . . I think we still deserve the odd treat here and there because what we're doing is hard work (and sometime a sympathy brownie is definitely a requirement!).

@volksgirl64: We're really spinning our tires on a name. We've kept coming back to the same one for months now but neither of us have the guts to confirm its the one. I'm getting antsy because I want to DIY some name/initial projects too!

@Goldilocks1107: That's so cool they pointed out hair and that your LO is growing like a champ! It'll be interesting to see how her birth weight compares to the estimates! I'd go by your home scale for sure, much more consistency with time of day you're weighing yourself etc.

@volksgirl64: Have fun with your DD's birthday! I hope you find some time to relax too.

Wow. I'm really struggling with the reply feature... really not liking how you have to go back and forth between pages. Am I just technologically-inept?

Has anyone had their LO's percentiles drop? At our growth scan a month ago she was measuring 50th, but at my appointment earlier this week she was 30th. The OB wasn't worried because she was gaining weight etc. but I'm worrying I'm not giving her enough room in there.

    persimmon / 1099 posts

@Goldilocks1107: for the record I had a huge 7lb weight gain and then the following week was down 8lbs by their scale. The doctor told me one of their scales were broken and they had issues with other moms having weights all over the place. I know it's impossible not to keep track of the number but my baby is also 95th percentile already and that plays a huge part!

So turns out my instinct was right about my not diabetic friendly instructions for my nonstress tests. My dietician thanked me for calling and then called my OB to change their instructions about sugary drinks/food before the NSTs. I'm relieved!

Today my back/hips are just killing me. It's so weird. Last week I was feeling fine and this week I am just so uncomfortable. My hip/leg is killing me my back is killing me I can't get comfortable in bed and I'm really feeling the 3rd trimester aches and pains. DH has convinced himself this baby is coming in April now. Maybe he is right?

@Nskillet: Way to watch out for the other GD mamas out there!
I just took a walk around the building and thought I was going to pee - first time that's happened! I think LO is sitting really low and pushing against my bladder. I had to do Kegels as I walked to prevent an accident!

    @winniebee - DD just turned 3 on Monday, it's unbelievable that I have a 3-year old!

@lags - I went back and forth on it for forever. I like the name but I worry about if she'll like the name or if I'll still like it when it's time to deliver or even if she'll look like the name once I see her! And I'm not telling people because I don't want them to make comments that would give me pause since I've already been so wishy-washy about it.

@Goldilocks1107: don't beat yourself up about the weight! you were very trim before getting pregnant, I am sure you will bounce right back! A girl I used to work with went from 110 to 200 lbs during her first pregnancy (she had Toxemia) and now she is bone thin as ever! She is also very tall and slender like you.

@LAGS: Yep, the same thing has happened to us. Our DD (can I call her that yet?) went from 49th percentile to 35th percentile. Doctor was not worried about it at all. She said it's totally normal for them to have growth spurts and fluctuate in size. We are expecting her to be pretty small anyways.

I will chime in on the 'name talk' issues. I thought we were all settled on name, but out of nowhere yesterday evening DH told me that he doesn't like the way that the middle name flows with the first and last. (We were going to do middle name named after him). But he didn't have a name suggestion to replace it! So last night when I woke up to pee I couldn't get back to sleep because all I could think about were possible middle names. It was driving me crazy and this morning I told DH about this and he accused me of 'guilt tripping' him. As the day progressed, I think I settled on a middle name (that we had talked about once) and I sure hope he goes for it because I can't stand this up-in-the-air business with the name. (New middle name will be my maiden name....someone once suggested that I name my son my maiden name, and I like that it would carry on my family name a bit in a way).

@Goldilocks1107: I have to get better about not leaving the house without using the washroom first. I actually had an accident yesterday when I walked to the mailbox and back with my dog.......made it all the way to my driveway and then lost it. Then I cried. Then I took a shower. Luckily I was home.

Today is my birthday. Had a half day of teaching. Now I'm trying to clean the house for my weekend guests (Mom and best friend). Tonight we're going to actually get the new vehicle.....biggest birthday present ever, literally. (But a present I'll be paying for for a long time).

  27. winniebee

    hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts

    @cvbee: Happy birthday!

@LAGS: We did - we were smack in the middle at our anatomy scan and I was never measuring small...but then at our fetal survey while in the hospital, out of the blue, he was 15% percentile (with the caveat that the high risk clinic at the hospital is really conservative). The doctor isn't terribly concerned, but now we have to go for routine ultrasounds to monitor his growth. We'll find out what his new stats are on Tuesday.

We are totally undecided on a name. We have two combos that we like, but neither feels right yet....but no other names feel right either!

  28. Rainbow Sprinkles

@cvbee: I think it is really cool you are using your maiden. I can't wait to have a boy because I want to name his first name my maiden name. It's Lawrence... I think that's such a posh name for a boy!

  29. Rainbow Sprinkles

    eggplant / 11287 posts

@winniebee: you will know for sure when you see him for the first time!
That is what I am counting on before we settle 100% on a name.

    I forgot to add:
It's DH's and my anniversary in three days. He took the whole week off work, but we don't have the money to go stay anywhere since I haven't been working since 20 weeks. I posted a thread about this, but does anyone have any creative ideas for things we could do together or something I could give him?

@Goldilocks1107: Way to hold it in! I'll admit, I sneezed a week or so ago and had some leakage. DH still hasn't let me live it down.

@volksgirl64: That's a good idea. Its already hard enough choosing a name let alone having the peanut gallery chime in with their two cents.

@Mrsdaredevil: Thanks for this! Hearing that others have been experiencing something similar and their OBs not getting to worried about it is reassuring.

@cvbee: Happy Birthday! Sounds like you'll have quite the B-da weekend! I think your middle name thing is a really nice idea! My Mom carried on her maiden name with my brother's first name and I always thought that was special. The going home outfit you bought didn't have the old middle initial did it?

@winniebee: Good luck Tuesday. I guess its a lot more common than I realized. Regardless, it definitely helps knowing they'll keep checking in on them. Do your belly measurements measure small too, or just from the US?

  32. winniebee

    hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts

@LAGS: I have been measuring "on" the whole pregnancy and never got an estimate of LO's weight until last week at our fetal survey while in the hospital. Since he came out on the low end, they are going to start monitoring his growth with ultrasounds. How many growth scans have you had now?

@Goldilocks1107: I gained 7 pounds, too! I am so sick of going to the clinic. Got my tour of the hospital. I'm skipping my internal exams, and the next class. I don't want to sit through another dumb class with less info than a book AND over an hour drive to get home.

Whatever--your body knows itself better than any doctors or nurses will know it. Your body will do the right thing for you because you have been taking care of it all this time. Don't stress.

@winniebee: Don't worry too much about the weight while on bedrest. It's only a few weeks to go (what... 4 more for you now?)

@LAGS: We don't get any growth scans--and I'm tiny and DH is average, so I bet our baby is well under 50%.

@Nskillet: glad to hear they changed the sugary food recommendation!

    @cvbee: Happy birthday!

We're still not talking about names again, and I'm OK with that.

I feel like such a big ball of negativity. I am so over pregnancy--well, still.

@Mrsdaredevil: Ooooh! Anniversary? Any free museums near you? And then you can have a picnic? What area do you live in? All the good free stuff to do really differs by location. I love a botanical garden picnic and .... what # anniversary is it? Make something homemade.

@pastemoo: I am over it too! Come on baby! We still have so much left to do, but at this point who cares? I obviously do not want to go into labor yet with 4 and a half weeks left, but I will welcome when I am 40 weeks! I will be so happy when we meet our son and I am no longer pregnant.

I'm watching college softball on TV right now. While those days are over bc I am an old-ass now (bummer), I played slowpitch the past couple of years. I miss getting out there! My husband and I agreed that we probably won't be able to play until the fall. It's those small things that make me realize how much our life is going to change. I only hope our son takes after my love of sports!

Who else is eating more these days? I thought we were supposed to slow down at this point? I cannot stay out of the kitchen lol

@LAGS: Ha, no, the name outfit just has the first name. And when I bought it I was totally willing to accept that we might change the name (or at that point that the boy prediction might be wrong), but it looks like we're still safe.

@pastemoo: an hour drive from your class?! That's crazy! I wouldn't do it either.

@marriedandlovingit: I am definitely snacking a ton....and eating 'bad' foods too. Now that I've confessed, I should get back on track; thanks for listening. (Catholic kid here).

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. We got the Edge home and are feeling super relieved. DH admitted that it was starting to stress him out that the baby might come before we had a vehicle to legally take him home with. I am so tired from all that driving to get it. (Though I did score on getting to go out to a bigger city for birthday dinner....had a delicious tandoori salmon spring salad with Naan garlic bread....and just had some cake for dessert.) My most 'real' (non-work) shower is tomorrow.....can't wait! Goodnight all!

@pastemoo - I just weighed in yesterday and I gained 7 pounds too! I was horrified! I know that half of it is water retention because I don't have a left ankle anymore but still, that's a lot.

We ate out a lot this week so I think a lot of it is salt. I want to cut back on the salt for sure and hopefully the next appt will go better.

@Mrsdaredevil: that's really sweet! You can do hometown dates, go to movies, and get baby stuff done!

@pastemoo: Yeah trying not to worry about it but I've eaten like a pig the past few days. All i have to look forward to. They will keep me on rest until 36-37 wks so 4-5 more wks (will be 32 wks tomorrow). I think we will feel more comfortable with me adding in more time on my feet and sitting up more after 34 wks (my sister delivered her first at 34 wks with a great result). So my next milestone is 34 wks. I can do it.

weeks....@marriedandlovingit: my appetite for meals is insane. I can eat so much in one sitting. Ha my husband and I are washed up athletes too...

Thanks for all the support on the weight issue ladies - it seems to pop up periodically as a sore spot for most of us (probably moreso now that we're close to the end).
I focused on eating better yesterday and clocked in around 2300 calories. Which I think is about where I'm supposed to be if we need 300 more calories toward the end of our pregnancies . . .
@Mrsdaredevil: Congrats on the anniversary! How about: making a special dinner together (including dessert!), seeing if there's any live music going on in your area with no/small cover charge, checking out a cute town near you that you can window shop for antiques or check out the local attractions and eat at a little cafe?

@winniebee: ahha, My appetite is FINALLY more than before. I've decided that if I am going to gain this weight anyway, I get a treat every day or two. Might as well enjoy gaining the weight. I will go back to the gym after, and I know you will, too. We can be virtual gym buddies.
