I wonder if some people just don't get the glucose test. I just had my 25 week and there was no mention of it. My next appointment is for week 30 (should have been 29 but our schedules didn't align). No mention of glucose test for me.

@cvbee: Maybe you don't have any risk factors?
I woke up at 2am with sharp right upper abdominal pain--exactly where they tell you to go the ER if you're pregnant. So I did. They sent me to L&D (I freaked out for a moment because we're not a viability yet!). Baby is fine, gallbladder (in the right upper abdomen) is fine. So they sent me to the ER. The ER doc didn't seem to get that I was pregnant and kept trying to give me medicine for pain that I'm not supposed to take. Luckily I brought my own tylenol. Finally requested to be discharged after being in the hospital from 3am to noon. I have a new appointment with a doctor and my regular doctor's clinic (my reg. doctor is out of town today). I HATE ER doctors. I am so over it, but the pain isn't going away on its own, so I will go back. Hopefully this family prac. doctor is awesome like my regular family prac. doc.
(Not having a good day).

UPDATE: Baby and gallbladder fine (said that before). GI fine. Lungs fine. Possible that baby kicked me in the rib and caused some tissue damage. I get to go back to the ER tomorrow and they gave me some stronger meds (scary).
Basically, no emergency. And apparently baby is really big!

@pastemoo: Oh my gosh I'm so sorry to hear about what happened!! Are you feeling any better? How annoying! Is he really kicking that hard?? Good to hear that he is big and healthy : )

Hi girls, sorry for slow reply. @pastemoo, wow! Some footballer you have in there! Great to know there was nothing to worry about though.
Appara 28 weeks is standard for the glucose test here. And it seems like they don't bother with the straight one hour one, they skip straight to the two hour torture. I'm dreading it, to be honest, I always bring a glass of water to bed and tend to sip a little on and off during the night- I'm a snorer so get a v dry mouth. They've got their work cut out for them with me, I'm inclined to faint when there's blood flowing around!
Also they generally only do it if you have risk factors, high BMI being the main one. I'm a plus size mommy so it was a definite test for me. Fingers crossed I pass!
We bought the first few vests and babygros today... DH fell into a five minute fit of hysterical laughing when he saw what I got. I think it made it quite real, that we'll be bringing home two babies in about four months!

@aunt pol: Oh boy! You'll be ok though! Good luck on your test.
And... wow, really, he did cause that pain and do some damage. I'm a little scared what he'll be able to do when he's bigger!
nectarine / 2039 posts
@pastemoo: wow, that's quite a kick! I feel squirming and little pokes under my right rib cage all the time, and sometimes in the middle of my rib cage. I sure hope I don't get a kick like you had! Someone mentioned football....I'm thinking maybe get that kid into swimming......congrats on your little athlete. sorry about your pain

@aunt pol: maybe I won't have to get the torture test then. It sounds awful! The things we do for our babies!

Just got back from my 22 wk OB appt and all is well...and discussed results of anatomy scan. I'm not measuring big or small - right on - and baby's heartbeat is still doing well. Up 10 lbs total which I guess is good for my petite frame and I'm on pace to gain 25 lbs or so which I'm fine with. Hard to believe after my next appt it will be appts every 2 wks. All of a sudden this is going really fast!
Other than that, plugging away at our registry little by little and trying not to kill my husband who has been snoring lately and keeping me up : /
Oh, and I just officially had the first "stranger" ask me if I was pregnant. Oscar, our office's after hours cleaning guy asked me if I was having a baby. Brave man!

@winniebee: Wooo hoooo!! every 2 weeks/ That actually sounds pretty awful.
@cvbee: thanks

So my 24 week appt is this wednesday! Pretty excited to see whats new with baby skillet. I still feel her quite low and not very high up for how ar along I am.
Has anyone has any rudeish comments made about registry items? My Mom made some weird jokes about the convertible car seat we reistered for (mostly about its price) apparently my aunt made some comments to her about the baby riding in a mercedes and "who registers for a car sat at that price" Its a britax car sat, but whats the big deal? If its out of your price range dont buy it? Am I being hormonal or is this rude?
nectarine / 2039 posts
@Nskillet: people can be so critical. My Mom, oppositely, gets critical when people register for cheap stuff. She says that when you register for gifts you should be dreaming big. The cheap stuff you can buy for yourself on any given day. Everyone's got an opinion.
persimmon / 1099 posts
Thanks Cvbee. I mean, the car seat is 230ish bucks which I know is a little pricey but it isnt 500 bucks. I just felt like my Mom was trying to guilt me into a different choice to appease someone else and it really upset me. I dont ge what purpose sharing their "laugh" at my expense did. My mother also said she justified it by saying my baby would be spoiled which I think made things worse for me

@pastemoo: Crazy! Sounds your baby is putting your ribs through the wringer!
@aunt pol: I hope you survive your glucose test! It is so much fun to buy stuff for the babies! Love it!
@winniebee: That's so much fun to have a stranger acknowledge your pregnancy! I kind of loved it this weekend when we were out for breakfast, and I was waiting in a bathroom line-up, and the little old ladies kept offering to let me budge! I kind of like the attempted special treatment, even if I don't take them up on it.
@Nskillet: Ugh - the registry criticism is so freaking rude! If you don't want to buy it, buy something else, but don't be judging me on my taste/preferences. I am sure there will be some behind my back sniping when people note the $750 stroller ...
kiwi / 525 posts
@Nskillet: don't ever ever feel bad about a quality car seat. It keeps your baby alive if you're unfortunate enough to have an accident. No way should you listen to anyone saying anything about price for safety! Had a (kind of) related discussion with my SIL last year- she couldn't understand why I wouldn't just buy the cheapest tires for my car. Em, they keep me on the road. ?! Quality first!
persimmon / 1099 posts
Thanks to everyone who replied I'm feeling much better. @Aunt Pol you're so right!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Nskillet: That's annoying. If you don't like registry items or think they are expensive, don't buy them! It's not as if carseats are particularly cheap anyways!
@MsMini: The old ladies offering you cutting rights is so sweet!
Yesterday was a big day - DH felt the baby move from the outside too! His face was priceless : )
In icky news, today brings a lovely hemorrhoid and all the joys that come with it....
persimmon / 1099 posts
Boo hemmroids! I have been so stopped up this week and last I feel like I'm bound to get one myself I hope you feel better soon!!
persimmon / 1134 posts
@winniebee: welcome to the hemorrhoid club. It's a sucky club, but at least we aren't alone. I was def hoping to avoid them, but it didn't happen.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@Nskillet: @jennylynn: I SO do not have the constipation problem. Pretty regular in fact. This is probably way TMI, but this morning had a difficult BM and now am having issues, including bloody stool. Have a call into my OBGYN even though I know it's a hemorrhoid. What do you do to treat them??
persimmon / 1099 posts
Yeah straining will cause them. It's why I've been so nervous to get one. Do you know if its internal or external? I'm not sure of how to treat it but do know tucks and preparation H and sitting on a donut can help with pain. you have my sympathy lady!
kiwi / 525 posts
Lots and lots of water and fibre and gentle exercise, girls! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I might get through without experiencing this horror - my bowels tend to the diarrhoea side of things, and pregnancy/preg vits have them behaving like normal bowels. So far. I have heard they're horrible, sympathy to everyone afflicted! Is this the spin off point for a thread about all the things we explain to our ungrateful teens that we had to go through to have them?
persimmon / 1134 posts
@winniebee: If they are severe enough and cause a lot of discomfort, you can have them surgically removed. Otherwise, it's just pain management for when they "flare up". I know lots of people have them and they don't even bother them. They make suppositories for them , ointments, and soaks, but I don't have any personal experience with them and hope I never have to! I've heard that a hot soak really helps, like a hot tub. But of course that'll have to wait until post pregnancy. Maybe a warm bath would provide some relief also???
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
So I just talked to my nurse and she thinks it is more likely that I have a small rectal tear...she prescribed Tucks wipes, hydrocordizone ointment, and rectal suppositories. Ewww! She wants to make sure it doesn't get worse because I do NOT want a rectal fissure. Lordie.
@aunt pol: I can totally see myself telling DS - look what you made me go through - when he is being a bratty 13 year old : )
persimmon / 1134 posts
@winniebee: blood is pretty common, especially if they are external and irritated. And this is gross, but the brighter red the blood, the closer they are to outside world. Nothing to be super concerned about unless it's a lot of blood. Always good to let your doc know though. I hate making those calls, when you already know what they're going to say! Makes me feel like an annoying patient.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@jennylynn: Ugh I know! But I am glad I called on this one b/c I really wouldn't have done anything to treat this. This one is apparently very close to the outside world!

Since we are going there, haha, this actually happened a couple months before I got pregnant (morning after wedding to be exact and up the suck factor), but I had a bunch of clotted hemorrhoids that were so painful I couldn't sit. Went to the dr and had to have to have the clots surgically removed. So gross and embarrassing. Hope none of you have to deal with that ever!

I had my GD screening yesterday. Just waiting to find out if I passed now. The drink really wasn't as bad as I expected, it just burned my throat a little.
kiwi / 525 posts
@jennylynn: did you pass the glucose test ok? Hope you did. How's everyone doing otherwise? Bums healed up? You're all very quiet the last week!
kiwi / 525 posts
@jennylynn: good woman! That's brilliant. Mine is 12th march- fingers crossed I get through it too!
kiwi / 525 posts
@Nskillet: do you guys not have a choice for the drink? We use a regular Lucozade here- think its similar to your Gatorade? At least I like the taste of that. And after a full night without even a sip of water I'll be delighted with it. Once I don't faint I'll be happy!
Sorry, just realised I was assuming it was the taste of the drink you were not looking forward to- I keep blocking out the big purpose of the thing itself!

No glucose test for me. (I think) I feel a bit left out from what all the May ladies are doing.
This week for me, the big thing is major baby movement. I was poking back the baby all weekend and it was a little creepy and strange and fun all at the same time. There is a little baby in there!!!! Ahhhh!!!!!
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
@cvbee: CUUUUUTE!!
For the hemorrhoids... anyone treating with food? (high fiber foods like prunes, apples, etc) I think my mom got them, and just treated with Tucks wipes. So far I haven't gotten any, but know I'm prone, so I am eating prunes every day. Actually, I'm lucky that I already like them.
So... things are going peachy over here. My glucose test is the 24th. The rib pains are insane, but hey, it'll be worth it for baby.
At work a whole bunch of people asked "are you pregnant? is it a boy?" LOL! But a really sad one--a woman was telling me about her c-section and I said "congratulations!" and she said "oh, she died." I was so sad and felt bad for bringing it up. It was like 8 years ago, I think. She does have another daughter (would have been the older sister), and she is really healthy and a teenager now.

I posted on WB, but I ended up failing the 1 hour portion of the 2 hour glucose test. My OB is sending me to gestational diabetes education and I will follow the diet just to be cautious.
I am also experiencing edema, and my BP is starting to climb so I am doing baseline bloodwork for PIH. So not a great appointment today. On the bright side all looked well in my last ultrasound, baby wise.
We are making progress on our renos, we are hoping to be done end of March, so we will put together the nursery end of March to beginning of April. I feel like that is cutting it close, but I am sure it will be fine.
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
@MsMini: Sorry! My friend actually had GD and it wasn't so bad. The diet blew, but she managed and her second pregnancy she didn't have GD. so even if you have it, it's not so bad. AND apparently only 30% of those who test high on the 1 hour test are shown to have diabetes on the overnight fasting test.
grapefruit / 4056 posts
@pastemoo: It was the fasting test, here they just do it for 2 hours though, I passed the fasting value, and the 2 hour value, but failed the 1 hour value. Usually they only consider it GD if you fail 2/3 values, but my OB is super cautious, and I was borderline on the 2 hour value.
