2nd time moms, are labor pains worse than Charlie horse leg cramps? I was rudely awakened with one this morning and screamed my lungs out... And then wondered if I couldn't handle that, how will I handle natural birth?
nectarine / 2019 posts
@Glitter: It's totally different. Charlie horses are horrible, and just hit you out of no where. Contractions sort of grow steadily painful allowing you to sort of build up your tolerance in most cases over time. Now the "ring of fire" that could be compared to a charlie horse I believe. Luckily it doesn't last long.
nectarine / 2019 posts
@Glitter: crowning. Right before the baby heads pops out.
My first birth I made no noise. I also wanted no one else to speak. It was pretty strange, until crowning. I looked at my husband and growled the F word lol
persimmon / 1281 posts
@junebugmama: lol! Are you one of these women who rarely use the F word, outside of labor?
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Glitter: totally different! Charlie horses blow, I get them in my feet, and calves all the time!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I have a somewhat bad mouth language wise, but during labour was very quiet, and no matter when I am usually very polite, please, thank-you, etc.
I am however many hours into this pushing, literally almost there and some hospital person pops their head in the room and asks if a group of paramedic students could come in and watch....I overhead it, and without hesitation said "f$&k no" and everyone near died laughing. Worst timing ever, had it been earlier in labour maybe, but also given what I do for work, there could have been a chance I had seen these students before, and I didn't want to go there. That was such a funny moment in all of the labour fun.

@Glitter: I had this same experience today! I've had little leg cramps here and there at night, but the Charlie this morning was strong! I gasped and whimpered and then just like you thought of labor and tried to breathe, stay in the moment, etc. Ha! Then felt like I must be such a wuss Nice to hear I'm not alone.
I guess we'll know soon enough...
persimmon / 1281 posts
@anandam: lol good that you thought of that DURING the pain. I was a total wuss and over the pain before I remembered to breathe. What NOT to do during labor. Seems like many May mamas plan on going natural. Interesting.

Night sweats? Going to be the death of me. Another reason to not sleep, come on!!!!
kiwi / 619 posts
@junebugmama: such a cute little oufit! I haven't picked a going home outfit. For DD, I had brought a bunch of clothes with us, and just ended up putting her in a green onesie type thing when we left. Everyone thought she was a boy as we were leaving. We were team green, so I had only brought neutral clothes rather than 1 potential outfit for boy and one for girl.
@Glitter: I had the worst intense leg cramps last pregnancy. Then I learned that if I flex my foot upwards when I can feel it coming on, it goes away. So I haven't had to deal with it this time, other than occasional bad foot cramps after aquafit.
@Beebug: hahaha, oh, so many lovely side effects of pregnancy. I have been noticing that i've been warmer than usual at night, but no sweating yet! Just a lot of snoring...which only happens when i'm pregnant...lucky DH.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@cookie_dough: Ugh, I have been on the snoring too for a few weeks now!
I was thinking last night how I remember from the day I had DD how instantly I forgot what being pregnant was on my body. Like bending over and how it's next near impossible now, to one day post DD born and I can bend again.....oh the glory....! I wrecked my knee even more on the weekend, so can't kneel down for now, so only way "over" is to bend (awful on already awful back) and the baby in the way makes that hard.....I'm falling apart!
I wrote my last day of work on the big calendar in my office today, people noticing as they come in and saying "whaaaaat". The push is definitely on to get lots done in the next couple weeks!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Beebug: Oh no, that sucks about your knee I can't do too much bending because my back really starts to hurt. I can't refill DD's humidifier anymore (have to fill it up in the bathtub since it's too big for our sinks) so every night i have to get DH to do it. I'm so jealous that your last week of work is so soon!
I have a doctor's appointment this aft! I wonder how I'm measuring this time. I was at a birthday party for a friend's LO this weekend, and no one there could believe that I wasn't due till May...they thought I had at most a week or two left to go. ugh.
cherry / 184 posts
@junebugmama: Oh goodness, that is adorable!!! Good find!
@Glitter: I am definitely not planning to go natural - I feel like the anomaly these days, especially in the Seattle community, where it's popular choice. It's just not for me. More power to everyone who has the mental wherewithal to handle it! I am certainly not knocking it!
@Beebug: I love seeing the "last day" reminder on my calendar, too - it's motivating and helping me wrap things up! I am going down to 3 days per week starting in April, and then last day is 4/30. Yay!!!
Is anyone else thirstier than they have ever been?! My constant obsession with drinking water is taking over my life. Yesterday, I had 20 glasses of water, and then 4 overnight, and am on glass 5 right now. It's crazy. When I'm not drinking, I feel parched. It's crazy! Would this be concerning to anyone, or is it just another lovely side effect of the third trimester?
kiwi / 619 posts
@gingerblonde: I'm not usually a very thirsty person, but I did notice over the weekend that I was thirstier than usual, especially at night. But I was also really sick at the end of last week and a bit over the weekend, so not sure if that had to do with it. The problem is that I'm already up sooooooooooo many times every night to pee, that I'm trying to limit what I drink at night. But this weekend I was just too thirsty and ended up drinking (and peeing) a lot more than usual!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@cookie_dough: I have an appt this aft, too! 2:30! My "two weeks" isn't until Thurs, but I couldn't fit it in later in week with what they had avail! Will be interested to see how I am measuring too! Ugh about comments on you though. It seriously is amazing how different pregnancy can look on everyone though, whatever shape you take for baby is best, this pregnancy look isn't forever
@gingerblonde: +1 on motivating! I feel like I have a fire under my butt to get stuff done!
I am always frantically thirsty it seems like, it's so annoying. I am finding my appetite is way down, and my thirst is through the roof. So weird.
@Glitter: re: natural birth. I have no idea what will end up happening, totally open minded on it, but based on how #1 know/felt the benefits of drugs and by no means opposed and will happily welcome anything that helps in that time!!
PS it's Monday, so that means 33w for me, holy crap!!

Just got back from my appointment. I gained 7 lbs in 3 weeks So they told me that I should really be watching what I eat. I was, however, measuring right on track, which the doc said was a better indication of the baby's size. There was a cupcake sitting on my desk when i got back (left by a co-worker). I ate it as my "last hurrah" before really buckling down! DH is running a half marathon in less than a month and won't be eating any junk until then, so hopefully it will be easier since we'll be in it together.

@Beebug: I think I maybe have night sweats too? Every night for the last week or so I've woken up at 2 or 3am soooo hot. Even when my husband swears it is cold. I've been getting up and turning on the fan so I can get back to sleep. And your poor knee! My cousin is 1 week farther along than me and her husband said she has given up picking up anything off the floor lol. I can still pick stuff up pretty easily but I have a hard time getting up from seated on the floor. I have to rock up to my knees and then use both hands. It is super attractive.
@gingerblonde: literally 20?! That seems like a lot! lol. I am definitely thirstier than usual, drinking more than usual (I'd say 1.5-2x my norm) and also waking up thirsty in the middle of the night. But I'm not up to 20 yet Although for as much as I'm drinking I'm actually peeing less than I was a few weeks ago so I wonder if my body does need even more? I'm certainly not over-hydrating, even drinking a lot.
@iluvpink: yay! Welcome! I'll update the calendar to include you soon. Are you having a boy, girl, or team green? And do you have a name picked out?
cherry / 184 posts
@iluvpink: Welcome!!
@Mae: Literally 20. I know that seems like it must be an exaggeration, it isn't. My husband was like "are you sure you shouldn't call your doctor? this can't possibly be normal!" Maybe I will call after all...
papaya / 10343 posts
@gingerblonde: lol I mean, pregnancy is weird man. I bet it is just a normal-weird thing and not a concerning-weird thing. But I might still call just to ask and make sure they don't want to check you out.

Ugh - I just deleted my entire post
I've been so out of the loop, but I'm finally all caught up. I think I read like 15 pages over the past week or so. It is so good to hear what everyone else has been up to.
I failed my 3 hr glucose test a few weeks ago. It isn't suprising b/c I had Gestational Diabetes with my 1st as well, but I was hoping that wouldn't be the case this time. I'm on insulin overnight, but I've had a really hard time getting my fasting numbers under control in the morning, even with the insulin which has been frustrating. I'm not normally big on sweets, but this time around it seems like that is all I want to eat b/c I can't have them.
I also just had my latest dr's appointment. I'm measuring right on schedule or a bit ahead. They scheduled me for an ultrasound on April 11th to see how big the baby actually is. If he/she is big, they want to talk about inducing me at 39 weeks. I'm not super excited about this a) since we have done absolutely nothing to get ready for this baby and I don't even know when I'm going to stop working, and b) I am absolutely terrified of having a c-section. I don't deal well with hospitals/blood/etc. normally, and the idea of having surgery while awake completely freaks me out. Hopefully I'll just go into labor early on my own and won't have to worry about it at all.
I can't believe how close we're all getting!!

@iluvpink: welcome!!
I had my appt today, need to take my 33w pic today, too!
Weighed 178lbs, so up 1lb from last time, like then I was just up 1lb too. I figured, and likely only a pound because I ate McDonalds on the way to the appt, lol.
Bp good, baby HB sounded great, measuring 32w, so a wee but behind again, but not of any concern. I had a good cry/vent session on life and got some advice there. I checked before my appt, but I have been feeling mega pressure, blood circ in my lady bits, and when I looked (ew!) I looked like I had been beaten down there. I don't mean to joke or be insensitive in that regard, but black and blue with purple veins everywhere, I asked about them today, varicose veins. Need to get horizontal more, and ice them! I lol'ed at that! I asked about the sleeve I'm wearing on my knee and already had feeling if low circulation in my legs and she thinks my disc bulge in my back could be acting up, pinching nerves/restricting blood flow, but if my foot doesn't look different from the other (that doesn't have the knee sleeve on) not to worry, and I can sleep with it on. I feel like a wreck writing all of that, lol. I saw my baby doc from when I was preggo with DD, she had her baby's appt right before me! Baby was 9lbs 9oz, and 14lbs and change today! Almost a pound a week! Gave a good reminder in newborn cries too, oh my heart.
I think that's it? That's definitely enough!

@Beebug: Oh no so sorry to hear about your knee and the veins! That sounds so awful. Awesome that you were able to get some advice, hopefully it helps.
@iluvpink: Welcome! It isn't too late to join at all
@cookie_dough: Aww try not to be too hard on yourself for the weight. I myself am wanting sweets all.the.time. So sweet to come back to a cupcake...I'd be so excited!
@Keds: Oh no! That absolutely stinks about the insulin. I wish I had a suggestion for helping your blood sugar. Hopefully your baby will be measuring just fine and you won't have to induced.
@gingerblonde: Holy mackeral Andies! I am impressed with myself if I drink four glasses a day. I only drink water but apparently I am just not a big drinker. If I drank 20 I think I'd have to move into the bathroom. I go so often during the day as it is. Thankfully I haven't had to go during the night yet *knock on wood*
I had my 34 week appointment today. I was measuring right on track. The midwife, however, said she couldn't determine position so I go in for an ultrasound for my 36 week appointment to see. Hopefully Puff will be head down! Other than everything went well. I've gotten some light stretch marks on the right side of my belly. I'm not overly sad since I love my giant belly. I only got three with R and they are very red but I have faith they will fade as time goes on.

@Keds: I have GD too. I started my diet about a week ago. My fasting numbers are good but I'm still trying to figure out my lunches and when I eat out. I hate when I'm over my target! Luckily, it hasn't been much. But I still get sad that I just can't eat what I want when I want. I've also felt so good this pregnancy that having GD totally sucks.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Keds: oh and I forgot to mention that I'll get weekly ultrasounds starting at 32 weeks to check on the baby. I had a c section last time because DS was so big and it really wasn't bad. I had a great experience and will be having a repeat c section.
nectarine / 2019 posts
@iluvpink: welcome!
@Keds: Sorry about the GD
Well had my 33 week appt yesterday. I've gained so much weight at this point in comparison to what I gained with J2! I'm trying not to stress about it, but I feel like a cow!
I had an appt 3 weeks ago where I was measuring right on track and this appt I'm not measuring 2 weeks ahead. They are planning a sizing ultrasound in another 3 weeks. Since J2 was albs at 36wks I assume if I go full term, this one has the potential to be much larger. I won't let them induce me for size, but gosh it still certainly scares me lol.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Keds: ugh, sucks so bad, sorry At least we're almost done?
@Beebug: You have the worst lady bits luck! First the mirena and now this? Although I don't think it is that uncommon bc my hair stylist was telling me last time I was in how her BFF got a varicose vein down there and it was really uncomfortable, but it went away post-birth. Ugh. I've been a lot more sensitive/sore-ish down there but I figure just hormones/increased blood flow/whatever. Not serious enough to be worried about I don't think.
@cheesetomywhine: yay for measuring on track, and for getting to see your LO again I'm always so torn on the u/s issue. Like I'm glad I haven't needed one in 10 weeks now and I know I should be happy if I don't need any more at all because that means everything is good. But I still sort of miss seeing our DD. At my last 2 appointments they were able to feel her head clearly (sitting on my bladder lol) so I think she's positioned well and I'll prob only need an u/s if my bp goes high or I start measuring off or something? I dunno.
@iluvpink: No prob! I'll add you to the calendar next time I update it!
So, I had a weird thought this morning that didn't seem worth starting a whole thread for but I needed to share somewhere. I was reading that "did being pregnant change your views on abortion" thread and I almost typed my pre-pregnancy standard answer ("I've never found myself unexpectedly pregnant so who am I to judge") when I realized that I DID find myself unexpectedly pregnant. We never for a second considered abortion but when we had our birth control "mishap" (that led to this pregnancy) we did discuss that morning if I should go get Plan B. We sort of weighed the pros/cons because we were not planning on TTC for another year, and we knew that Plan B doesn't abort an implanted egg, but just prevents implanting if it has not yet occurred. I ended up leaving it up to my husband entirely, I told him I felt like the odds of us getting pregnant from this one time were pretty slim and I was ok rolling the dice but I also didn't want to push him into anything and I was fully willing to take the pill if he was more comfortable with that. He thought about it while he got ready for work and opted to "let the universe decide."
So now thinking back on all this, now that we're so attached to our LO, it really freaks me out. Like this happened in the morning so I would've taken the pill within about 2-3 hours of the incident, which means almost certainly the egg would have not implanted yet and this LO would not have existed. And I know that's sort of the point of it, and also that if we'd not had a "mishap" she'd also have not existed. But I'm just feeling so weird that we came SO CLOSE to causing her not to have ever existed, and that ultimately I left that decision up to my husband and didn't even try to persuade against that (not that I "knew her" then of course). I don't know-- basically just rambling too early in the morning! But I think I'd just not yet thought through all this before and I'm left with like, that feeling you get when you *almost* get in a car accident and realize how bad it could've been and how lucky you are that one stupid thing kept you safe or something.

Pregnancy is certainly getting even more glorious for most of us as time goes on, eh ladies? Weight gain, uncomfort, GD, diet restrictions, varicose veins. We are almost done, which really is just the beginning, but hopefully most of our issues will pass once our little ones are on the outside. Surely other things will follow, insane hormones, night sweats, phantom movement, long healing times, etc, but it will all pass with time and our LOs will be in our arms!!
@Mae: Interesting reading your post. Your experience definitely would impact your standard answer and I'm sure it's a little mind boggling to reflect on it all especially so close to your EDD and meeting your little girl. While I am definitely glad for you guys your DH let the universe decide, and crazy that the "incident" led to your LO! I read the thread, but didn't post, I don't really know where my head is with it all, but try to believe everything happens for a reason with everything in life.
Yes on varicose vein, doc literally said "the only remedy for this is having a baby", lol. In the meantime lady bits can have a bag of peas, haha.
I had the best snuggle in bed with DD this am, she is a little suck lately, but I love it.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: lol right. Pregnancy is definitely taking its toll on us at this point! Also, phantom movement? That sounds creepy!
And yes, I think being so close to meeting her is definitely having an effect. Like obviously when I wound up pregnant we were like "woah, weird" and were happy about it. But she was still theoretical. She feels very much like a real person and a part of our family at this point and it just freaks me out we almost made her not exist… and never would've even known what we missed out on.
apricot / 309 posts
@Beebug: totally forgot about the phantom movement! That was so freaky and I'm dreading the night sweats but at least it feels like you are shedding some water weight!
I have a bit too catch up on it seems
