@Mamasig: If you don't mind me asking, how was your C-Section experience? I have placenta previa (marginal) and I am scheduled for a possible C-Section on May 12, of course if the placenta moves then no C-Section. I am very open minded with it, but I hear all sorts of experiences and mostly aren't all that good. How was yours? Were you able to walk right away or how long did it take you to walk right or shower or do anything on your own, like driving? Thank you for your input
@Mae: wow! I never thought of abortion and even though I knew many girls in college and high school that did it, it never crossed my mind of "what would I do in their shoes" or if I should judge them for decision. Its incredible that you let your DH decide and now you are about to have the most beautiful decision that universe made for you

@Beebug: Lol about Mcdonalds on the way to your appointment! mmmmm...huge craving now. Sorry to hear about the varicose vein issues. You really aren't having an easy go of this pregnancy, between your DD being sick, your knee, your back, etc
@Mae: super interesting post! It is crazy to think about those split second decisions that can change everything. But I am definitely happy for you guys that you "left it up to the universe"
@iluvpink: I know you asked @Mamasig, but I thought I would chime in as well and give you a few tidbits about my c-section experience Mine was planned because DD was breech. I had it on a wednesday morning, and I think I was stuck lying in bed until the Thursday morning. But once I got up, I was able to shower right away. I think they say you are supposed to wait 6 weeks to drive, but my recovery was really fast and easy, I definitely didnt' wait the full six weeks. I THINK they just want to make sure that your range of movement is ok, in case you have to brake fast, etc? But i'm actually not even sure! I definitely had to have DH stay in the hospital with me the whole time (I was there 3 nights) because I couldn't really lift DD or do too much in terms of diaper changes, etc. Once you leave, they tell you not to lift anything heavier than your baby for...maybe about 6 weeks again? I totally started doing dishes and vacumming and all that way before the 6 weeks though...once again because I was feeling quite recovered before that. One thing that no one mentionned that worried me was this extremely sharp shooting pain in my abdomen whenever I would get up from lying down (so mostly in the middle of the night). It was sooo painful, but would just last a few seconds each time. But my doc said it was normal. It went away after a few weeks.

@cookie_dough: I told DH about the weight gain and the likely reason, he pretty much said the same thing... "dang, I'm craving it now" soooo guess what we had for dinner?! We're so bad.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: lol I stopped after my appointment today and got a donut and cheetos for lunch. then I felt bad and had a banana and cheese stick to round it out with a little fruit and protein at least. Pregnancy does not always breed good choices haha.
Had my 34 week appointment this morning, nothing really to report. All is well with baby and me. All my random discomfort is normal and I was instructed to just do whatever I feel like doing (or not doing) haha.

@cookie_dough: Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It really gives me an idea of what to look forward to. I always like to challenge my body, but I do understand that we all got our own pace of recovery. I will take into consideration everything you mentioned. Thank you again, lady

@mamasig: It is so frustrating not being able to eat what you want, when you want. Isn't that the best part about being pregnant?!?! At our hospital they take the GD stuff really seriously. It was SO depressing at the time, but really funny in retrospect, but when DD was born even though my sugars tested fine after giving birth they still had the diet restrictions in my chart. DD was born at night so when I woke up the next morning they brought the food menu. My husband and I were both starving and I pancakes sounded SOOO good. So I ordered them and they brought them up and when I took the top off the tray there was one lonely silver dollar sized pancake sitting there b/c they said that was all I could eat based on my restricted diet. I seriously almost started to cry.
@cookie_dough and @mamasig: Thanks for the c-section info. I'm glad it wasn't bad for either of you, that makes me feel much better. Really I'm just a big baby!!
@Beebug: I'm having some of the same problems. It feels like someone walked up and kicked me in the crotch. Also like the baby might just fall out at any moment. My doctor basically said the same thing as yours - totally common with second babies and there isn't much you can do except rest a bit when it starts to hurt a lot and have the baby As if all of the pain is just going to go away after popping the baby out and not be replaced by all kinds of other lady bits pain! (Maybe that is one benefit to having a c-section!!)
I'm also totally craving McDonalds right now.
@Mae: Glad your appointment went well!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Beebug: Mcdees twice in one day? now that sounds like pure heaven hahaha. I'm totally fine with admitting that I love love love me a big mac. mmmmmmmmm.
@Mae: yay for a good appointment! and for donuts and cheetos! I totally have food on the brain, now that I'm trying to resist all the delicious treats.
@iluvpink: no problem! Just let me know if you have any questions! I really didnt' want a c-section last time (I wanted a natural birth!!!) But in the end it went so smoothly. I'm kind of nervous about it this time (although it's not a guarantee that I'll have one) since recovery will be a lot harder while trying to chase a toddler around.

@Keds: Oh, what a tease with the pancake last time! I remember getting my first meal after my c-section, I guess it was around dinner time? I totally forget. But i was STARVING. All they brought me was some dry toast and maybe some jello or something? I was SO disappointed. that's pretty awesome that your hospital has a menu though... with ours, you get whatever is on your tray...and that's it. No choices whatsoever.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Keds: omg i would have cried haha. I have really been wanting a cold lunch meat sandwich, and jimmy johns delivers to the hospital. Totally planning a cold italian sub will be my first post-birth meal!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Keds: As a second time Mom (and first birth being vaginal) I often think about a c-section and how different it would be! No lady bits healing, though the trade off of incision healing. Thinking of a scheduled c-section specifically, like no contractions/labour, if it were an option, I would definitely half think about it, but not sure I would actually opt for it.
@cookie_dough: I have never had a big mac in my life!!! I am a Chicken McNugget person, I had that at lunch, and because I felt really bad getting it twice in one day I *just* had a plain cheeseburger and chocolate shake when DH got it for dinner, haha! He gets a big mac, but yah...I have just never had one!
For all now craving McD's, I am sorry....all I can offer are the coupons I have and make it a little cheaper?
I want a big tea from Tim Horton's so badly right now. It's so cold out, and I just got back to my desk after lunch, I should have stopped to get one, we have three where I work, but I don't want to walk.....hello lazy.
@Mae: balance is all that matters, haha!! It sounds silly, but I try to be that way, if I know I ate X amount of healthy, covered my suggested servings, blah blah, then I am all for eating crap food, so long as I got good stuff in, too!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@iluvpink: no problem! I feel like c sections get a bad rep so I'd love to give you a positive experience. It was scheduled because DS was estimates at over 9 pounds at 37 weeks. Based on my size and his, it is what we felt most comfortable with. I went in, they got started around 7:30 and he was out before 8. I felt tugging and pressure but no pain. DH got to hold him and then they cleaned him up. I held him on the way out and all in the recovery room.
I think I walked late that night or three next morning. It hurt at first but not horrible. The more you move, the better it is. I could have left the hospital on Friday but ended up staying longer because DS ran a fever.
I drove at 2 weeks. That was good for me because car rides were uncomfortable at first. Every day it got better. I only took pain meds a couple of days.
I definitely needed help in the beginning. My DH and mom were there to help.
The only thing I hate is my scar - it healed like a keloid scar. But I think that is just my skin. The doc said she can remove the scar tissue this time and hopefully it won't happen again.
Let me know if you have any other specific questions!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: yea. I've been known to just sit down with a bag of raw peas because I ate crap and then I feel like I need to cover the crap with green veggies.
Also re: mcDs… I've sort of hated it for the last decade or so? I was never a huge fan but I got a bit grossed out about it in college and stopped eating it entirely. Hadn't had it at ALL in probably 8 years. Totally ruined by pregnancy. I've had it like 4 times in the last 3 months.
kiwi / 619 posts
@Mae: I requested the exact same thing last time! ALL i wanted my entire pregnancy was a sandwich with a bunch of deli meat on it...mmmmmmmmmmmm. A friend brought us sandwiches at the hospital...which was really nice, but they were AWFUL. such a letdown! I'll be honest and say that I haven't really stuck to the deli meat rule this pregnancy...I've probably had some about once a week.
@Beebug: I'm at the timmies in our building every morning getting a tea! Gotta love "roll up the rim" season! I've been sticking to the apple cinamon tea, since I know it's caffeine free, but I'm getting kind of tired of it. The donuts with sprinkles were calling out my name while I was in line this morning. drooooooool.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@cookie_dough: Vanilla Dip is my favourite donut, I'm a child with the sprinkles, haha.
papaya / 10343 posts
@cookie_dough: I'm just way too paranoid for that. Like if someone else is doing it I'm like "oh yea that's fine." But I feel like if I don't follow all the rules perfectly and anything went wrong (even if it was clearly unrelated) I'd blame myself. Just not worth the anxiety I'd cause myself over it haha.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Mae: I've been eating deli meat this whole pregnancy. Doc said it was totally ok. I lived off of sandwiches for months!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Mae: I did feel a bit nauseous a few months ago, after eating a sandwich (although I'm sure it was unrelated since I was feeling nauseous a lot), but that did get me a bit paranoid and I stopped for a little bit. But I did start eating them again recently. I make DH a sandwich for lunch, and it's soooo much easier for me to just make one for myself in the morning rather than make somethign different, so about once a week or every two weeks I will give in. I do feel guilty every time though!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Keds: I know. It's like a cruel joke! My husband says cheat a little if I want. But I'm a rule follower. I told him he'd better bring me a big old cake to the hospital!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Mamasig: Ok good, i'm not the only one who indulges in delicious deli meat
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I do deli meat when we give some to DD, for some reason can't help myself as I cut hers up, but when DH offers to make an extra sandwich for lunch for me with it, I definitely don't have it. I break all sorts of other rules, so I find it funny when I get hung up on certain things.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Mamasig: @cookie_dough: Yea again, RATIONALLY I know its no big deal and I'd tell any pregnant friend "cheating" to go for it. But I just am so prone to guilt/anxiety about this sort of thing it's not worth it to me. Especially at this point since I've made it 34.5 weeks and have less than 6 to go (hopefully!). But I'm going to be super excited about my sub in the hospital
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: lol on sub in the hospital. I remember the hospital meals and being such a snot with them. Thankfully my Mom brought in home meals for us for the time we were there, aside from the juice and packaged stuff, hospital food wasn't my thing, and I am really not that picky ever, but it just did nothing for me post-baby!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: They explicitly told us on our tour that all the local food places WILL deliver to the hospital lol. There is also a cafeteria with some food that can be brought up to the rooms. I'm not planning on eating much "hospital food"
ETA: My hospital is the Ohio State University hospital located next to campus. So LOTS of food and food delivery options there. If it was a suburban hospital I'd prob not make anyone go to the effort of driving out for food haha.
apricot / 365 posts
@Mamasig: @Beebug: @cookie_dough: @Mae: I swear to God the deli meat prohibition is a recent thing and didn't exist when I was pregnant with DD in 2005. Since that was my first pregnancy, I followed the rules religiously, didn't have a bite of sushi and never slept on my back. Don't remember avoiding deli meats at all. So I pretty much ignore that rule.
cherry / 184 posts
@Mamasig: @whodat: I'm with you ladies on the deli meat.
I'm probably kind of a pregnant-lady criminal, but I definitely have eaten deli meat, have had caffeine fairly regularly, etc. Have avoided the obvious no-nos and sushi.. but those risks seem greater to me than the others. I read "Expecting Better" early in pregnancy, and though initially skeptical, it actually made a lot of sense to me, and the risk of occasional deli meat and a cup of coffee didn't seem extraordinary. But it's such a personal thing, just like everything about pregnancy - my BFF is pregnant right now as well and she's very, very cautious about those sorts of things.
@Mae: I bet it will be the best damn sandwich of your life!!! I am also already considering what sort of feast I will ask for after delivery.
papaya / 10343 posts
@gingerblonde: See my doc did not say to avoid caffeine! Probably more proof that all these "rules" are just shots in the dark lol. My doc said 1-3 cups/day were just fine. I stick to 1 cup/day of coffee, and have throughout my pregnancy, and feel fine about that.
cherry / 184 posts
@Mae: Oh good! That's interesting - I think you're right about that. I have absolutely had a cup a day throughout - I don't think I'd have made it through work these past few months otherwise. I got a little flack from some people at work and some of my girlfriends, but hey - I feel fine about it, and it doesn't sound like it's the consensus of the medical community anyhow!
papaya / 10343 posts
@gingerblonde: right. I asked my doc about it specifically since I am such a coffee drinker. She said evidence shows some effect with HEAVY drinkers, like 6+ cups/day. So she feels comfortable telling people 1-3. I decided to take the conservative approach on that and do 1/day (although on Christmas I did have a second cup, because merry christmas to me-- and I was sad to not partake in mimosas with my fam).
apricot / 365 posts
@gingerblonde: @Mae: I started out in my first trimester drinking zero coffee, because coffee = BARF, then as I started feeling better I started having 1 cup a day, and now I am guilty of drinking 2 cups on most days. I justify it by the fact that I gave it up entirely in the first tri, so it all evens out to 1 cup a day, right?
Last weekend me and DH had coffee with his friend and pregnant wife (due 10 days before me), and I ordered a large regular coffee, and she ordered a small decaf and made SURE to tell the waiter it HAD to be decaf. Of course that made me feel like I was poisoning my baby....
papaya / 10343 posts
@whodat: lolz whatever. I mean everyone has to do what they are comfortable with! I went to the movies with some girls (some I knew, some I didn't) last week and one of them asked if I missed wine (yes) and was like "I guess that's a dumb question. But really I think giving up coffee would be way harder for me." And I was like "you don't have to give up coffee, I have a cup every single day and it's fine." and she just gave me this… look. haha. Oh well!
cherry / 130 posts
@Keds: what a tease! I would have def cried about the pancakes too. Did your DH at least get a decent breakfast?
@cookie_dough: ooh! one more questions, were you gassy? I hear that can happen. If so, how did you manage? and I am sure it will be a bit harder this time around dealing with your toddler and a LO....but I am sure you will do just fine
@Beebug: I told DH one of the first things I want to eat once baby is here is cold cuts! I am dying for it!!! AHHHHHH
@gingerblonde: I am with you in the coffee department. I have it once or twice a week. I love it! I figure if they say one cup a day its okay then one cup once or twice a week cant be that bad right?
kiwi / 619 posts
@iluvpink: hmmmmmm...good question! I'm trying to remember. I don't THINK I was overly gassy, but I may have just blocked out that memory! I remember the worst part while still in the hospital was the first time they make you pee. Once they take the catheter out, they make you pee in a container to prove that you were able to pee enough, otherwise they threaten to put the catheter back in (which I guess would be really unpleasant when you aren't numb down there?) It took me a long time to be able to pee, and I was sooooooooooo worried about them sticking the catheter back in! But everything was fine, so all my worrying was for nothing!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I was SUPER gassy after my IUD removal, omg....and the random one shoulder pain? How is all that connected? So weird to me.
I really want a glass of wine lately. I am going to dinner with some girlfriends and acquaintances tomorrow night and I so wish it was somewhere where I could have a decent glass of wine (@cookie_dough: Swiss Chalet, LOL) so I should book a dinner date with someone else soon and get myself some winneeee. One glass I will definitely let myself have, and enjoy every sip. I don't even drink that often not pregnant, but I am just craving holding a glass and sipping!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Beebug: I let myself have a teeny bit of wine when DH had I were on our staycation last weekend. The funny thing is that he ordered red wine, and I hate red wine, but felt that I needed to have a tiny bit anyways. Ouh, swiss chalet...we are strictly a st-hubert family (not sure if you have those where you are?) DH is weirdly obsessed with St-hubert and refuses to eat at swiss chalet because "it's just not the same". I find them pretty much the same I do enjoy dipping my fries in that delicious gravy. mmmmmmmm. more food to drool over.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@cookie_dough: I have heard of St-Hubert, probably too French for my nick of the woods I loveee Swiss Chalet sauce, I keep the packets of it at home too!!
Just looked on their site, closest one to me is in your city, they are in QC and NB too, but not this way. Maybe we will have to stop at one in NB or QC on our drive this summer, DH and I were talking about that, we are insane. Two under two driving across the country? We usually drive straight through, those days are over, this will be at least two nights!
nectarine / 2019 posts
@cookie_dough: I've been eating deli too. Sometimes I will put it in the microwave, just to make myself feel better lol
I also eat a ton of soft serve, which I would have never done my last pregnancy. I'm certainly less paranoid this time around.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@junebugmama: mmm soft serve, I suppose McDonald's shakes count as soft serve....I have definitely broken that one.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: @junebugmama: Also looking forward to soft serve and wine! I have a thing for DQ Twist cones with sprinkles. Mmmmm..
On the wine thing, I probably WOULD have a half glass occasionally because I think there is really good support that it is not harmful-- except my husband doesn't drink. I don't think he'd say NO if I said I was going to do it, but he's not a big fan of drinking generally and I think it would get me a "sigh" and it's just not worth it But just a few more weeks! I should be making a list of all the stuff i'm eating/drinking…. mmm
coffee bean / 39 posts
@iluvpink: I think that was even sadder. I don't think my husband got to eat at all. I was like, um so I just had a baby so this is my pancake. Sorry buddy, you're out of luck.
@mae: yum - I miss Jimmy John's! I used to live in Chicago and had Jimmy John's all the time. We don't have them in California so I always get one when I am back in the midwest.
My dr. said 1-3 cups of coffee is fine too, so I've tried to limit myself to 1 cup a day and not everyday. Maybe it is b/c we're in Northern California, but she also said that some wine is fine too, so I've definitely had some sips/small glasses here and there.
@junebugmama: I had no idea soft serve was off limits. Now that sounds really good too!
cherry / 184 posts
Wow, no soft serve either? Gosh, I am a criminal! I have had more DQ blizzards in this pregnancy than in my entire life added together (which wasn't many, never been a big dessert person, but milkshakes and ice cream treats have sounded great for the past 8 months).
