Is anyone else having a hard time sleeping / getting comfortable at night? For the past week I've had the WORST insomnia ever. I normally have no problem sleeping and it's driving me crazy tossing & turning all night. I think I slept in three 2-hour spurts last night... barely! It's frustrating and I'm exhausted sitting here at work this morning. Not that there is anything anyone can do... but I just needed to vent. ugh! Of course all I can think about is if it's this bad at 24 weeks what the heck is the 3rd tri going to do to me?!!! ha!

@sarah.clarisse: Have you tried placing a pillow between your legs or using a pregnancy pillow? Placing one between my legs always helped me sleep a little better with DS. So far no sleeping problems related to this pregnancy, just related the toddler that still doesn't STTN

@sarah.clarisse: yes! I feel your pain I've started taking unisom because its the only way I can get any sleep. I still toss and turn sometimes depending on the night, but it's much better now. It always took me forever to fall asleep before pregnancy...now it's just ridiculous.

@anbanan15: I've tried a mountain of different pillow configurations, which up until this week were helping me sleep pretty well. I'm hoping it's a phase & will pass.
We were on vacation over the 4th of July and that's when the insomnia started. Starting tonight I'm going to get back into my routine of going to the gym in the evenings... hoping that wears me out to the point of passing out in bed!

@lilteacherbee: I was just thinking of giving it a few more days and then calling my midwife to ask about her thoughts on taking unisom. It's just cruel to not sleep BEFORE the baby is even here!

    cantaloupe / 6791 posts

@sarah.clarisse: exactly! I didn't take it the night before my last ultrasound because I didn't want it to effect LO and have him be sleepy (I love to see him jump around). I don't even know if it effects them that way, but I didn't take it just in case. Welllll I was anxious about the ultrasound anyway, so I literally slept in like intervals of 2 hours. I moved all around the house trying to get comfortable. It was awful! Felt like baby was here already!

@lilteacherbee: Just letting you know, my midwife had me stop taking the unisom for my nausea because it's an antihistamine and can start drying up milk production - in case you are going to BF. So I quit it and now my insomnia is back!

@Mrs. Pink: Not necessarily a salad for me - just kind of everytime I ate a full meal this past weekend I felt like my stomach was about to pop!

    @Mrs. J: GREAT score!

@sarah.clarisse: I have had some trouble with restless leg syndrome keeping me up for a bit. But I have found whenever I include a good amount of exercise in my day I sleep really well.

@sweetooth: I'm totally blaming most of my insomnia on restless leg syndrome. I would have it every once in a while before I was pregnant, but it's totally kicking my butt this week.
I read that exercise plus a warm bath before bed can help... so that's my goal this week!

@Ash: seriously?! Ahh well I guess I won't be taking it for much longer then. The funny part is I'm on summer break right now, just working part time. When school starts back in a month, I'll be spending 7 hours with 18 four year olds so I will NEED my sleep then!

So DH is at his school painting his classroom today. I decided I would do some DIY for Nathan's room. I went to the store today and they already had back to school stuff out (which oddly, makes me very giddy and excited!). It was hard, but I walked past the teacher stuff and picked up some cute stuff for the nursery. I always have to be doing some sort of artsy project and since I'm not ready to go full on teacher-crazy yet, I figured I'd be baby crafty instead haha. Maybe I'll post some pics tonight

@lilteacherbee: Completely understandable! I work 12hr shifts as a peds nurse - turns out to be an exhausting day!! I miss my unisom. Can;t wait to see your diy stuff!

As for the girls with restless leg, I use a heating pad on low/medium on my legs and it relaxes them enough for me to crash. I haaaaaaaate the feeling of being restless!

    apricot / 360 posts

@Mrs. J: I haven't tried the snoogle yet .I was trying not to buy additional pillows for the bed but I might give in! Currently I have a massive collection of regular pillows & a square euro pillow that I mound up into a sorta pyramid to lean on (so I don’t end up flat on my back) and use a king size pillow at my side. I’m a shortie so a king size pillow is essentially a full length body pillow for me!

Ladies… I’m finding it harder & harder to stay focused at work. I think it’s a combo of being tired and my mind racing with all sorts of baby related thoughts. Anyone else having this problem? I constantly browse the hellobee boards looking for past posts on topics that interest me.

I thought it would be fun if any other November moms were considering some of the same things as me… so a few questions and facts….

I am pretty sure I want to cloth diaper the little one. But, I don’t want to start shopping for my stash until we decide what our daycare options are. I’m afraid we won’t find a place we like that will do anything but disposables. Anyone else?

Currently I’m seeing a midwife group and have plans on birthing at their birth center. They also do home births, but the birth center is closer to the hospital if anything would require a transfer. I’m not really worried about coping with a med/free intervention-free birth (yet), but I am totally scared of recovery! I am freaked out that my body is gonna get beat up and I’m going to be feeling bad for a long time after. Is anyone else planning on going the non-hospital route?

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@sarah.clarisse: a lot of us are gonna cloth diaper so you won't be alone there - me included! And although I am planning a hospital birth, I see a midwife and plan to have a med-free birth. I've been reading about hypnobirthing and water births, mainly.
As for daycares not doing cloth, I'll never understand. They're just like sposies! Grrrrr

ETA: recovery should be easier due to avoiding meds.

@Mrs. J: how do you use it? I can't seem to get comfy with mine!

  19. FarmWifeGina

    pear / 1571 posts

@sarah.clarisse: Ha, yeah, so I've slept pretty much flat on my back (although the mound of pillows grows as the pregnancy progresses) for both of my pregnancies and will probably continue to with this one. The feedback I've gotten from my caregivers is that your body will tell you when it's not a good idea- you'll feel dizzy and lightheaded from too much compression on that major blood vessel. So far I've never had any such symptoms, and so I continue to sleep in the manner most conducive to sound sleep for me. Anyways, just throwin' it out there. I hate it when I see moms who feel oh, so guilty about sleeping comfortably.

Anyways, yes, I've mainly cloth diapered my first two kids and plan to continue with Cricket. It's addicting- I love seeing my clean diapers flapping out on the clothesline.
And I'm also planning an out-of-hospital birth! My first baby was born at home, my second was an unmedicated hospital birth, and now I'm going back home for this birth. I've loved both of my birth experiences, but the doctor who delivered my second baby at the "local" (50 miles away) hospital is no longer there and I really don't want to go 100 miles to the next hospital to deliver with a doctor I like (birth centers are unheard of here), so yeah, I'll stay home this time. Birthing at home this far from the hospital is NOT a decision I take lightly or I encourage anyone else to make without a lot of thought and research into the subject, but I've done my research and with my history and the capabilities of my super super midwife, it's a decision we're comfortable with, so, yeah.
As far as recovery- I didn't tear with my first birth and felt pretty much back to normal within 2 weeks. Didn't tear with my second either and that time I was feeling back to normal physically, literally, within 2 days. Then I had some pretty dreadful PPD in the following months, but that's another story. This time I'm hoping for a fast recovery again and am planning to have my placenta encapsulated to hopefully help with any PPD issues.

@Ash: @sarah.clarisse: I am also going to EBF/pump, cloth diaper, and I am planning a hospital birth with a midwife that is hopefully med-free. We just signed up for Bradley classes and I have Ina May to read as well.

@Ash: I sleep with it under my head, behind my back, and through my legs. I recently put a pillow on top under my head, and I am liking that.

  21. Maysprout

@sarah.clarisse: We cloth diapered with our first and will with our second as well since we have all the stuff. We have some of the fancier cloth diapers but they were too big for LO the first couple weeks/months so we just used old school prefolds, a snappi http://snappibaby.com/products/snappi-diaper-fastener (they're expensive for what they are but make things so easy, I got mine off amazon) and a couple covers. You could do that with pretty minimal investment to start out with, especially if you catch the covers on sale or get them used. I did have 2 newborn covers, which since LO was small was really nice for the first couple months.

    pomelo / 5132 posts

@Maysprout: we are going to do kissaluvs fitteds with covers until baby is big enough for the bum genius.

Also, DH felt the baby move for the first time! Big kicks!

  23. Maysprout

    grapefruit / 4800 posts

@Mrs. J: Nice. I never used fitteds so I don't know much about them. Do you have to fold them at all or do they velcro on or do you just pull them up like underroos?

  24. shellio

    pear / 1614 posts

@sarah.clarisse: We used CD with our first son and will use them again for this LO. Hope you find a daycare that will use them! I would say wait till you find a daycare to start your stash - CD is great but finding an affordable and reliable care provider is more important, IMO. We use pre-folds and covers and have been very happy with them, although at the toddler stage rinsing the poop out has become a little old. We've also done some elimination communication and actually DS doesn't wear diapers at home anymore since about 17 mos old.

I have a body pillow, I love sleeping on my stomach and really missed it when I started getting too big before, around 7 mos. Right now I still can (barely) but am much more comfortable with the pillow.

@Maysprout: They snap, and our covers velcro.

Some of the covers I ordered came in the mail today--they are so preciously little!!

@Mrs. J: @Maysprout: We're using covers and fitteds too, mostly. I got a bunch of fitteds from GMD that are closureless (debating whether I'll want to add velcro, or use snappis) and a few Tots Bots Bamboozles (velcro), Swaddlebees (snaps), and Thirsties (velcro). I went a little crazy, lol.

@sarah.clarisse: We are cloth diapering as well. I've done a lot of research and have decided to stock up on Bum Genius 4.0 snaps (we'll use disposables until he fits into them; they go from 8-35 lbs). I'm excited to do cloth!

My town doesn't have a free-standing birth center, which is what my first choice would be, but I'll be giving birth with nurse midwives at the hospital. They're very supportive of med-free births and of avoiding unnecessary interventions. Each birthing suite has a big tub, too, so I'm excited.

@sarah.clarisse: We cloth diapered with DS up until more recently and will be going back to cloth with this baby. We have mostly pockets. Bum Genius 4.0 and Rump-a-Roos make up the most if our stash. We also have a good amount of Ragababe AIO's and then I went a little crazy wanting to try everything I could

I will giving birth in our Women's and Babies hospital (which I guess is like a birthing center). I see a midwife with my OB/GYN practice (it's just her and 2 OB/GYN's). Last time DS was delivered by my OB/GYN since she was on vaca and I was induced. This time she *should* be delivering unless I go early an she is on vaca again haha. I really like the OB/GYN though...he thinks he is a comic (the other OB/GYN now so much. She' not as personable).

Is anyone planning on doing a maternity photo shoot? I'm torn.

  30. MrsTiz

    cantaloupe / 6800 posts

@Mrs. J: I was ALL for it, but my wedding photographer, who I swore would be my lifelong photographer, moved to TX! Her sister who helped her with my wedding is still in town, so I might see if she would? If I can't get her to do it I won't have one because their prices are like 1/8 of everywhere else and it's not worth the money to me. I'll just make DH snap some pictures of me haha!

@sarah.clarisse: a big fat YES on the not being able to focus. I am so unproductive lately. A mix of being pregnant, obsessing over baby things and it's been raining for like a month so I just stare out my window all day. I cant get a thing done on time!

Another thing, I signed up for our breastfeeding class and the birthing classes. Birthing classes start at the end of August!

  31. anbanan15

    grapefruit / 4681 posts

@Mrs. J: We were against doing them. Bump pics of myself aren't really my thing (I didn't take any really with DS) and DH wasn't into doing a maternity shoot either. We ended up doing one in the end only because it came with a photography package my mom got us as a shower gift...maternity shoot, NB shoot, and 3 more sessions during the first year. At the end of the year she does a triplicate "watch me grow" type of frame. We also got a large album, similar to a wedding album, with pictures during those shoots and there are a few (like 2-3) of the maternity pictures in there because the photog insisted we would want them some day, but that is ALL we have of them. I feel like we are obligated to do the same for this pregnancy (my mom is also getting us the package again, so since it's included....now to talk DH into it again. Ha!).

@Mrs. J: Regardless of how I use it, I always wake up on my back (which I'm trying to avoid).

@Mrs. J: I don't plan on it but things could change. I don't feel like mine would be very attractive! But I am looking into a birth photographer.

I've bought BG 4.0s and for the newborn stage, I'm thinking about doing prefolds with covers.

  33. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@Mrs. J: Nope, definitely not. I like taking bump pics of myself just to see how I'm growing, but I definitely don't need an entire photo shoot devoted to pregnant me. I'm not usually a fan of pictures of myself and it'll just stress me out. Plus, in the last couple years we got e-pics done and wedding pics and I feel like it would be a little narcissistic of me to want more pics of myself.

But we're definitely doing newborn photos! And DH and I will be in a few of them.

  34. FarmWifeGina

    pear / 1571 posts

@Mrs. J: Probably not. I kind of wish, but I would have pretty high expectations for a shoot like that and that would require a better photographer than there is around here. And that's partly my pride talking because I'm a photographer trying to corner the maternity/birth/newborn part of the market and I would feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot, business-wise, if I hired another local photographer to do them for me. Although, I honestly only know of one who's work I really like and who I would trust. But when comes down to it, I probably need to spend that money on a birth tub and not on pictures, so that's what I'll do.

  35. mrsmacandcheese

@sarah.clarisse: We're CDing and the whole daycare + diapers thing is another one I'm shoving my head in the sand for, right now. I don't think any of the daycares around here would be down with cloth diapers, but I could be wrong!

I have no option other than a hospital birth -- there are no midwives close enough to us! But I'm aiming for a drug-free hospital birth.

I don't think we're going to get newborn pics -- again, nobody really nearby AND our post-baby budget is so, so so tight -- but I might try to DIY some!

I am definitely feeling baby move for real -- I got Mr. D to put his hand where she was thumping around and he FREAKED OUT because she was rolling around and changing position underneath him. It was really cool to see him so thrilled by it! I've been going nuts buying baby clothes, too... can't wait to move, get her room painted and get started on the nursery. It's all feeling very real!

Ok, question..i'm trying to decide what to do for this weeks chalkboard. 24 weeks doesn't have a definite fruit, some places say corn, some say grapefruit, others say cantaloupe and somewhere else said eggplant! So I'm thinking i'll just say something about viability instead? Would you word it:
Jack has hit viability this week
Jack is now viable outside of the womb
    Jack reached viability this week
    or something else??

  38. Ash

@Ash: I know! I hate how one week it's a tall skinny fruit and the next it's a short round one..my MIL is going to go insane over them. She calls me all the time and says "a bell pepper is smaller than an onion!" or whatever the previous week said haha

@MrsTiz: Bahahahaha, that's what my mom does too! This week baby is the size of a carrot and next week a papaya... most carrots I've seen are longer than a papaya. I get so confused!
