@karenbme: Yikes, that’s way worse than here. Long lists at daycare centers are common, but definitely not to that extent.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed about the potential lead, and also am mourning the loss of our old provider. She’s literally watched my girls grow up. We’re also super close to the other family that goes there and I am so sad our kids will be separated.

Ugh, childcare is crazy (and crazy expensive!) around here too! We live in a tiny town and options are really limited. I’m super lucky I get to stay home with my kids (although I admittedly don’t feel “lucky” every day...! Haha)

I FINALLY got my NIPT results...she gave them to me over the phone (everything low risk!) but I asked her to send the gender in a message...knowing full well I wouldn’t be able to wait until DH got home to open it, but whatever. Haha

And...It’s a GIRL! I’m so excited! I called DH to tell him, otherwise you guys are the first to know Letting our boys “pop a balloon” like they insist on (I literally don’t know how they even know about that! Haha) and then we will tell everyone else. I’m shaking I’m so relieved that we have a healthy little girl on the way

@bees_knees: Big congratulations on a healthy baby, and a girl after 3 boys, how exciting!

Also, congratulations to everyone else getting great results on their NIPTs!
We only did the regular 12 week bloods and ultrasound so I won't find out baby's sex until my anatomy scan, I'm jealous you guys are already finding out!
I had my first braxton hicks this arvo. I can't believe they've started so early this time, it took me a few minutes to even realise what it was!

@Umberto: I got BH really early with my subsequent pregnancies, too! Only a few more weeks until your anatomy scan! I don't know how I waited until 20 weeks with DS1...we've done the nipt for all 3 other pregnancies. I'm the most impatient person in the world I have NO idea how some of you can be Team Green!

  12. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@Umberto: @bees_knees: wow that is super early BH! i have the opposite problem where even my second pregnancy i was basically having contractions for several days after my due date and didn't even feel them.

ok so i will preface this by saying that i am so sorry to you @Umberto: that you have been suffering through hyperemesis, it sounds absolutely awful. shout out to anyone else who is still experiencing nausea. but right now i am soooo hungry like all. the. time. my first two pregnancies i basically took the "i'm hungry and pregnant and i can eat whatever TF i want" approach. this worked out fine the first time, but second pregnancy i was very very tired the whole time which i partially attribute to crappy diet, and was still struggling to lose that last baby weight before i got pregnant this time. i have been trying SO HARD to be better this time and eat super healthy, but i just want to eat cookies so much. like, many of them. the two apples i just ate are really not cutting it.

@Umberto: ugh, sorry about the HG. I was never diagnosed, but with my second I was on anti nausea meds and sick until 24 weeks, and I had to be hospitalized for fluids even with that. It was awful, and I’m so sorry you’re suffering that! I hope it lets up at some point!

@bees_knees: congratulations on your little girl! And how wonderful to have a healthy report!

  14. karenbme

    persimmon / 1419 posts

@nwm: I totally see that. I’m also less nauseous and more hungry these days, and trying really hard not to gain too much (with the three consecutive losses/grief I’m up ~15lbs from my normal weight to start, which also means the doctor is on my weight like a hawk). My go to for sweet cravings has been a bowl of fresh berries with some whipped cream. Not cookies, but close. I also have a big bag of dove chocolate squares in my desk drawer at work, and eat two or three of those daily, but justify it because they’re only like 40 calories each, and out of sight out of mind most of the time. I don’t know if it’s all the right thing, but I’m hoping to walk a line between denial and total indulgence. 🤷‍♀️

  15. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@karenbme: oooh berries and whipped cream sound like a good combo of nutritious and delicious! definitely sounds like you are walking a good line, but exactly, that is the line i'm trying to walk too : ) the deli across from my office started carrying these pistachio nuts that are flavored like potato chips (barbecue, chile jalapeno, etc.) and that is a good snack for when i want something salty but want to at least get some protein/nutritional value. plus they come in small packages so you can't go too crazy : ) but sadly they are way too $$$ to be an everyday snack.

  16. karenbme

    persimmon / 1419 posts

@nwm: Yeah, the only drawback of berries and whipped cream is that the grocery store always puts pound cake next to the berries so I have to consciously choose not to buy it each time. Those nuts sound really good, too. I also like cheese and those pretzel and hummus packs that you can buy (also $$$) for salty/protein. Hate to admit it, but we have a family size bag of string cheeses in the fridge right now and I almost always have one with me for emergencies. The baby and I qualify for family size, right?

  17. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@karenbme: lol, absolutely yes. i routinely just steal my 3yo's string cheeses out of the fridge, luckily he doesn't notice

So my NIPT results came back as inconclusive... which just means that there wasn’t enough fetal DNA to get results, not that there’s definitely something wrong. They’re going to draw a new sample at my appointment on Wednesday, and then we’ll be in limbo again for another 1-2 weeks. I just want to know if I need to prepare for another loss. Being in limbo like this is so frustrating.

@karenbme: I’m really sorry. That’s so frustrating. Do you have any other appointments or ultrasounds in the meantime?

  20. karenbme

    persimmon / 1419 posts

@rattles: I have a regular 12 week appointment on Wednesday, but it should just be pee in a cup listen to the heartbeat, schedule the next one. I have no reason to believe anything is going wrong except for history, I just fet like maybe I’d be able to stop holding my breath if this came back good. I’m wondering if I should schedule a nuchal translucency screen just to be on the safe side because I’ll probably be close to 14 weeks by the time the new results come back.

  21. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@karenbme: ergh, that is so frustrating!! the interwebs make it look like you are very likely to be able to get a more conclusive result on re-testing and there's no reason to think it means anything (could just be because it was drawn on the earlier side of the window?), but it's so frustrating to have to wait that much longer to get confirmation. sorry

  22. rattles

    grapefruit / 4903 posts

@karenbme: I’m glad the results came back more quickly than they’d guessed, and hopefully that’d be the case this time too. Still, I wouldn’t blame you for asking for an NT scan.

@nwm: I realized I never answered you about whether we were finding out the sex. We haven’t decided. DH would like to wait again, but I think I’d like to clear out the handmedowns we won’t need and decide how we want to assign the bedrooms. Our girls share right now, but we’d like to split them because it’s been two years and they still don’t go to bed well together. We have a guest room one could move into, but then the baby would have to bunk up with a sibling, and I’d like to start thinking through the logistics. He’s said he’ll defer to me, but I also know he feels strongly about being TG and can’t decide whether to veto. I’m trying to wield my power benevolently They’re supposed to give my OB the results but not give them to us until/unless we ask.

  23. bees_knees

    persimmon / 1064 posts

@karenbme: ughhh that stinks! Do you remember what they used to draw it? It has to be a 21 gauge needle, not a butterfly (when I drew blood I hated drawing with a butterfly anyways, but some people exclusively use them unless they’re told not to 🤷‍♀️) Darn it, I know how much peace of mind your results will bring you, bummer you have to retest! How many weeks are you? You can do the NT scan up until 13+6 if I remember correctly.

  24. LemonJack

    persimmon / 1130 posts

@karenbme: I’m sorry you have to go through the whole process again. That has to be so frustrating and stressful!

  25. karenbme

    persimmon / 1419 posts

@nwm: Yeah, I just worry that I’ll be the 1 in 3 who doesn’t get a result on the redraw and I’ll miss the window for an NT scan. As mentioned, I’m not at my ideal weight, which can impact it, but I was 11 weeks for the first draw, so not super early.

@bees_knees: I have no idea what kind of needle they used (or even how to tell the difference tbh). I’ll be 12+5 at the redraw so even if it comes back in a week again I would miss the window for NT if it weren’t already scheduled, plus the baby has been measuring a little bit ahead so I’d want to make sure to do it late next week or right after Memorial Day.

    grape / 75 posts

@bees_knees: Totally agree with you, I'm way too impatient to be team green, I don't know how other people do it! My OB offered the NIPT but at $485 we just couldn't justify the cost purely to know the sex.

@nwm: Contractions without even knowing it? Sounds like you were living the dream!!
I know what you mean re: trying to eat well! My OB gave me her blessing to eat whatever made me feel ok, but I'm trying to be careful anyway because I'm already overweight to begin with.

@rattles: Even if you weren't officially HG, it sounds like you understand those feelings of misery! Are you as bad this time, too?
It's already improved for me so much in recent weeks. I tried cutting back on some medication but regretted it very quickly, definitely not ready for that yet!

  27. Umberto

    grape / 75 posts

@karenbme: I'm sorry your results were inconclusive. That must feel really unnerving when you've had losses before and just want confirmation that things are going smoothly this time.

  28. bees_knees

    persimmon / 1064 posts

@karenbme: yeah I think I would schedule the NT scan too, just to be on the safe side. A butterfly has tubing from the needle in your arm to the collection tube, while I regular 21 gauge needle looks like a regular syringe. You can google pictures if you want to make sure they’re using the right type of collection method. I was going to post some here, but I know some people have an aversion to things like that! Anyways, it apparently makes a real difference, so just be sure they aren’t using the right needle!

@Umberto: I don’t have HG, but my nausea is out of control. I’ve been sick with all pregnancies, but this is the worst of them all. Not sure if it’s because it’s a girl or because I have 3 little boys to chase around! I’m 11+5, and my nausea didn’t subside until 18-20 weeks with my other pregnancies, so I’m not optimistic about it being over any time soon!

  29. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@karenbme: i totally hear you, i definitely think it makes sense to schedule an NT scan if that's what would put you most at ease. my practice has us do both anyway because they don't overlap 100% on what they find (and actually the NT can find more i think).

@rattles: yeah, i know what you mean about clearing out the hand-me-downs and logistics planning--that was a big part of what i wanted to know this time around too, i think it would annoy me to sort of have to hold onto everything and not know what we were doing, at least by the third trimester! that does sound very benevolent of you truth be told, with our first i badly wanted to know and my DH didn't so i just found out and didn't tell him (like, he knew that i knew, but i kept the sex itself a secret). i figured if i'm carrying around the baby i have a right to know when i want to know! he gave in and found out at the anatomy scan

@Umberto: ha, yeah i guess it was pretty lucky! when they started me on pitocin, though--then i definitely felt them

  30. bees_knees

    persimmon / 1064 posts

@nwm: hoooow were you able to keep the sex a secret from your DH?! That’s incredible.

You guys, I swear I already feel little baby movements! I’m only 11+5 (although baby measured 5 days ahead at my last US) but I’ve been feeling them all week. Maybe it’s because it’s my fourth so I know what they feel like?! I don’t know, seems crazy early. But it’s in the right place and feels exactly like early movement, so...I’m calling it! Haha. It’s seriously the best feeling. Every time I deliver a baby, I get sad for a couple weeks afterwards because I miss the baby kicks so much!

@bees_knees: @nwm: Thanks, ladies. This info helps. I’m definitely going to call on Monday to see if I can schedule the NT. I also learned via the lab’s portal that they shipped my sample all the way from northern VT to southern CA for testing, which seems like it would take some time especially since I had my draw on a Friday. I read that another brand of test needs to be processed within 3 days, so I’m wondering if that impacted the sample quality, too.

OK. I have some questions about the genetic testing at the 12(ish) week appointments.

This is my fourth kiddo, but I have never done genetic screenings before. Previously, we have always done the 12 week "NT" (nuchal translucency) ultrasound, and then found out gender at another ultrasound around 15 weeks.

So, I called my insurance and they said they cover the Sequential screening no problem, and it's only $230 out of pocket even if it wasn't covered. They said that the MaternitT21 test is only covered if certain criteria is met (and I know being 35 or older is one of them, which I am not), so I would need to discuss it with my doctor. It's about $2500 out of pocket.

So, I called the OB office where I have my ultrasound and "genetic screening consultation" appointment this Tuesday, and asked if I was getting the sequential or not, and brought up the "NIPT" that I keep hearing you ladies talk about. The gal on the phone at my office told me that there, the NIPT is the MaternityT21 test, which is only offered if provider deems it necessary. Otherwise, I will get the sequential screen.

Here's the thing. The sequential thing doesn't test for sex. The sex is an additional draw on top of it, which isn't covered by insurance (according to the OB office), and is several hundred dollars (if not more) out of pocket. MaternityT21 (which they say is the NIPT) DOES reveal sex but I may not qualify.

SO. Can you ladies PLEASE tell this genetic screening newbie which test you took, and how you got to that point? Was it suggested by your provider? Did your insurance cover it? Did you pay out of pocket? If you found out sex, what test did you take? Is NIPT indeed the MaternityT21 screening (because to me, one sounds like a generic term and one is a specific "brand").

My appointment is on Tuesday and I kind of want to know what to expect and if I have my hopes up for finding gender if I am not over 35?

  34. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@Beebeeholiday: first of all, kudos on being under 35, lol. i am jealous here is my understanding: the NIPT is a generic term for genetic testing done through a blood test that generally screens for three specific genetic abnormalities, and can also tell you gender. MaterniT21 is one brand (Panorama is another, and there are a few), and it happens to be the one that my office uses as well. My practice recommends it as standard for everyone, but basically advises everyone to call their insurance to see what's going to be covered. Since my last pregnancy and this one I was over 35, it was automatically covered. For my first, I called insurance and got a somewhat ambiguous answer, but I felt like I really wanted to do it, so I did and it was covered anyway for mysterious reasons. I think typically insurance will cover it if you are over 35, or if you have one of several specific risk factors.

Actually, randomly the MaterniT21 is "out of network" for me, so did cost me $240, which is annoying but obviously way better than $2500!

Hope that's helpful--and hope your doc can help you figure out a way to get it done !

  35. nwm

    clementine / 830 posts

@bees_knees: @karenbme: ha, you know, looking back it does seem crazy but at the time it didn't seem that hard? the key was that i just actively referred to the baby using gendered pronouns and switched them (like i would say "i think i feel her kicking!" or "i hope he's doing ok") so that if i slipped and used the correct pronouns without thinking, he wouldn't know if that was it or not.

but i'm glad he knows this time : )

  36. bees_knees

    persimmon / 1064 posts

@Beebeeholiday: You are right, NIPT is the type of test, MaterniT21 is one of the many companies that performs this type of test. I would suggest calling MaterniT21 and asking if they have a cash pay rate (I'm pretty sure they didn't when I called them in 2017 with my last pregnancy).

I did the Panorama, which is offered through my OB's office. I am not 35, so it was not covered by insurance, but Panorama has a cash pay rate of $249. I'm not sure if that is the rate they contracted with my OB? When I called Panorama in 2017, their cash pay rate was around $150. They were going to send my provider the kit, and then I would get it drawn and receive a bill. I can't remember the details for sure. I ended up having a different NIPT drawn.

If you're sure you want to get some sort of genetic screening, and the MaterniT21 doesn't have a cash pay rate I would get the NT scan, since that has to be done before 13+6. By the time you had an alternative company (like Panorama) send you a kit, you got it drawn, sent to the lab, results sent back to you, etc. I would think you'd be close to 15 weeks anyways, if gender is the result you're most anxious about But def talk to your doctor about your options!

  37. Beebeeholiday

    olive / 74 posts

@bees_knees: Oh, gender certainly isn't the thing I am most anxious about, but I was just hoping to know if I was doing genetic screening anyway. After previous losses and just having a family friend go through a Trisomy 18 tragedy, I really truly care more about the risk factors for chromosomal issues. HOWEVER, I *really* want to know the sex.

I haven't called Sequenom, which is the lab that does MaterniT21, but maybe I should to find out about cash out of pocket. My OB office said it was over $2,000.

@nwm: Thanks for the feedback! I will see what the OB recommends as far as which test I take. I am not sure if she can get it "past" insurance if I am not 35 yet. We will see what happens.

If all else fails, I will do the NT scan (tomorrow), sequential screen (tomorrow), and just order Sneak Peek to find out the sex.

How is everyone feeling? Some of us are out of the first trimester!

Morning sickness never really set in for me, and I am very, very grateful for that. I felt pretty sick with my previous pregnancies (all three girls), so I am wondering if this one is a boy.

I am still working out 5x a week and don't really feel limited in any capacity yet. I feel very lucky.

I gave away all my maternity clothes so I think it's time I stock up on a few things (at least pants, because my jeans are starting to leave indents on my belly from being so tight). Who has maternity pants they love?

@Beebeeholiday: My last two pregnancies I was under 35 and I had NIPT covered because of findings during ultrasounds. Now that I am over 35 it is covered without findings. I actually googled Maternt21 and my carrier's name and found their page on what is covered and when.

My morning sickness is mostly gone (I just get sick when I wake up) and wish I had time to exercise because I feel so out of shape. I feel like I never fully recovered from my last birth (less than a year ago).
