@hilsy85: that's the saddest thing I've heard all day (re: AF). Also, I too drink out of my sons sippy cups to see what amount of effort is needed. They're not all easy!
@sorrycharlie: I'm terrible at these threads too, but I'm going to try! My guy doesn't like sippy cups or straw cups. We're offering them a bunch now, because he's started to refuse bottles for milk and we've got to figure something else out! He is *clueless* about the straw.
He's still not crawling the "classic" way (but is scooting a bit on all fours) and has got 0 teeth. The teeth thing is killing me! Where are they?!?!

@mrsjyw: I you too!
Little man was up soooo much last night. From around 2 am he was waking every half hour and at 4 am wouldn't go back to sleep! Ended up just getting him up at 5 am when I got up to get ready for work. I think he's still teething.

@hilsy85: were you worried about straws being too sharp? Am I just a paranoid momma?
I let her drink out of water bottles (the sport ones). We call them nipple waters. Should I not let her do that?
I'm off most of next week so I'm going to try to be serious about feeding and cups. Sigh.

@katsupgirl: I just make sure to watch him so he doesn't jab himself in the throat with it. He's pretty good about not doing that though, he mainly likes to chew on them. As for the straw in his straw cup, it's silicone so it's very soft-- can't hurt himself with it.

@hilsy85: thanks! I'm going to see how she does with a regular straw today. I really have to stop being so anxious!

Hey mamas --- just left LO with my parents as we fly to Europe this evening... It was so hard. I was nursing him and started sobbing, but felt better after. Rethinking this whole vacation thing but too late now - I know we will have a blast and LO is in the best of hands all week! So hard to leave him though........ Anyway - just wanted to share. Looking forward to quality time with DH on an awesome adventure with friends... Talk to u guys in a week. Happy 4th!

@hellobeeboston: have a great trip
Someone finally cracked a tooth!!! It's sharp!!!! Just a bit of it poking through, bottom, front! She was off her food a bit yesterday, but other than that, fairly normal.
She is probably going to go for her first boat ride today, touched her first bass (fish) this am, and had pancakes, a weekend of firsts at the cottage!
We see DH Monday (and it's Canada Day, my fave holiday of the year!) and then Wednesday too, then his 3w of being away is over Friday. Caaaan't wait. Our 2yr wedding anniv is the 9th, crazy how time flies....and that's only 2 yrs!
nectarine / 2280 posts
@Beebug: that's so much going on!! How'd she like touching the sea bass? I need to plan a boat ride for the summer.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@katsupgirl: She didn't get to touch him for long, he went back in the water!
Anyone LOs really taking to books lately? C just stares at her bookshelf after her bedtime bottle now with full expectation to be read to. Turns pages (cardboard type books and I stick a finger behind the page so she can get it, stares/seems engaged as I read.....reading books is beyond my favourite thing to do with her right now, so, so cool.
nectarine / 2280 posts
@Beebug: I think DD loves reading books. She gets super excited when I say "let's read a book". Her favorite book by far is moo baa la la la.
nectarine / 2834 posts
@Beebug: DD still eats all of her books as we read.
@hilsy85: AF came back on fathers day for me. I was so bummed.
@hellobeeboston: Have a great trip!
C is also a non-crawler. She's Not Even interested but today she started tolerating tummy time a bit more and is pushing up.
She's starting to pull herself up on me and on toys but thankfully not in the crib yet.
One new thing is that she is absolutely addicted to the boob. If she had her way, she'd nurse 24/7. Right now, she is in a deep sleep attached but the second I try to unlatch, she wakes and freaks out. Just a phase?
squash / 13764 posts
@hellobeeboston: hope you're having a great time!!
@Beebug: yay, a tooth! We are still toothless...
@Tidybee: it's always one phase or another!
Anyone making progress with 1st birthday party plans? DH doesn't seem into the idea of having an actual party so not sure what' we'll be doing...
nectarine / 2667 posts
@hilsy85: I've started privately considering the first birthday, but am having 2nd thoughts after mrs. Sketchbooks post a few days ago. I know my parents & sister are flying in and we've got family in the area, too so a get together of some kind is guaranteed. I guess I should talk with the husband, although I'll probably get a blank stare
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
@hilsy85: I've already started planning and making purchases here and there. We are just doing it at the house and doing mostly family and close friends with kids. Looking at 40 people/kids total. Planning on a nice big party, but kind of using it as an excuse for a get together too.
squash / 13764 posts
@mewtill: @LuLu Mom: those sound like fun plans!! Any ideas on themes yet?
honeydew / 7283 posts
I haven't done any real party planning, but like @mewtill: Mrs. Sketchbook's post kind of reinforced my feelings about a smaller more laid-back party with family.
nectarine / 2667 posts
@hilsy85: last night I brought up a theme to my husband. He looked at me and said, "Um, the theme is 'This is my 1st birthday.' Hang up a happy birthday sign" That was also his response for our wedding (the theme is: wedding)
I think we will maybe do a "colors" theme because we do happen to have a multi-colored happy birthday sign already & I'd like to make a multi-color, multi-layer cake with natural food dyes.
honeydew / 7283 posts
@mewtill: I just told DH about your husband's "theme". He agrees. Surprise, surprise

No bday party here, just my parents probably for dinner and let her muck up a cake!
I secretly (lol not so secret now) hope we are preggo and can announce around her bday and MAYBE then we'll do something more, even an open house (we will be in new house then!)/bday party or something so people can see our new place to disguise it, lol.
That would be too perfect.....so let's be real, it ain't happening!
DH is home tomorrow, the 3w is nearly over. Happy 4th to you American ladies, hope you are having a great day today....and long weekend too I hope! (Do you get tomorrow if working?)
Had a Nov Mama friend from neighbourhood come over today, the girls were hilarious playing together, I love watching them.

no bday party plans here either, we'll probably just get her a little cupcake and take some pics.
L hasn't started crawling forward yet, but she great at going backwards. to be honest, i am glad because that means i don't have to do a lot of baby proofing yet we have a walker for her that she absolutely loves, she will follow us wherever we go. she is really into having the freedom to move around on her own. we try to feed her 3 times a day, usually just purees and yogurt, and little bits of solid food here and there. she seems to really like eating, but still gags every once in awhile. we are struggling a bit with constipation though
prunes have been helpful and she seems to like eating them. still just two bottom teeth, and they are so cute. we're going away with my family next week and the house we are renting has a pool! i'm so excited to take her in, we got a little baby float for her. still no mama yet, only dadadadada.
how are everyone's LOs doing?
@Beebug: can't believe you are soon to be TTC! that is so exciting. there was a period when i was declaring ONE AND DONE, but its funny how selective my memory is. all i remember is LO being small and squishy and milk drunk faces, and i'm like...awww...i miss those days. when i know that i was so miserable! i wouldn't mind too much if i got preggo, but we probably won't start trying until next summer.

@SleepyMonkey: I wish walker's were legal here, I would love to buy one, I feel like C would love it! Getting old one's used is pretty impossible too, most online places (facebook swaps, online classifieds) don't allow them to be sold! That is so awesome L loves it so much! C was only going backwards not that long ago, she will be all over before you know it, we definitely had to get on with baby proofing here

Oh wow, you guys are thinking about birthday parties already! I think we probably will do one, not too many people, but a celebration - I love what some of the bloggers have done with their weekly/monthly photos, and would love to have a reason to display them all together. It is amazing how old they're getting. I'm sorting through hundreds of photos I printed to put them in albums (I'm very behind!), and looking at the photos even from 5 or 6 months old J looks so much younger.
J is crawling like crazy, and fast too. We have to watch him like a hawk when we set him loose in the living room - luckily he still likes playing in his crib when we put toys in there, so we're able to have him play there when we need to do something besides chase him around. He's having 2 meals a day so far, but we're thinking about the third meal - the other day we gave him bits of watermelon, peach and plum for dinner and he loved it, but I think it was too close to his before-bed milk because he didn't have very much of that. He loves purees still, and does not like eggs. Too much texture I think! Our attempt at scrambled egg this morning was not met with enthusiasm.
I hope everyone in the US has a wonderful 4th!

@SleepyMonkey: no idea, just know they're illegal and if caught at border crossing, it's not pretty, lol.
grapefruit / 4291 posts
@SleepyMonkey: There has been some terribles accidents with babies in walkers falling down stairs in New Zealand so whilst they're not illegal here they're certainly not recommended! I've also heard they're not particularly good development-wise.

@Beebug: ah ok...actually i think i vaguely remember my SIL telling me about something this (she is canadian). @Kemma: good thing we don't have any stairs in our apartment!

How are you all doing ladies? What's going on with your cuties?
L has learned how to sit up and lie down on his own--now when i go get him from naps, he's sitting up looking at me. It's so cute! He is also SO close to crawling--I think he'll get there in the next few days.
He is also starting to throw tantrums (if you follow me on IG you'll see the latest--I didn't give him more cheese when he wanted it!). Not sure how to deal with them at this age. Anyone else dealing with this?
coconut / 8681 posts
@hilsy85: Yes!!! E throws tantrums too! They usually involve food too. If I'm feeding him banana with his oatmeal for breakfast, for example, and he wants his oatmeal he'll start screaming until I give it to him. Gah. I didn't know tantrums were supposed to start already???
squash / 13764 posts
@Running Elley: I know! A lot of ours are food or toy related...I feel bad but it's also so silly that sometimes I laugh!
coconut / 8681 posts
@hilsy85: I usually look him in the eye and tell him calmly that we don't scream at mommy but I have no clue if its effective!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
@Running Elley: @hilsy85: N just screams until he gets what he wants. He apparently screamed at DH for hours after they had lunch with me. I got home and he passed right out. Guess little man just wanted his mommy.

We are teething like crazy. That first tooth is realllllly pushing up and the other front bottom is visible, but still under gum. Her cries all day just sounded painful, it was awful.
Mine and DHs two year anniv today and after all that time he was away, plus my stuff yesterday I am eating dins alone on the front porch, got in a stupid argument and I don't even know how to face it right now.
C's baptism is Sunday, insane how time has flown and it's here. DHs fam is around as of tomorrow, I will see MIL for 2nd time since the insanity here when C was born, my plan of attack is to lay low and kill with kindness when applicable. I'm nervous, really nervous.
She is crawling everywhere, pulling up on anything, and even pulling up (?!) on flat walls, she really just uses them for balance I guess? I hate it, just don't want her to be growing up this fast. I got her one of those push walker things today (used) but she is definitely not ready for it, just wanted to play w/ spinny things on the front of it! Sleep is hell right now, her am wakings are awful, but perhaps now explained with those teethies!!!!
nectarine / 2667 posts
@Beebug: our guy just started teething for real - I can feel the sharp bits & it feels like 2 coming up. He seems so miserable; I wish they'd pop all the way up!
@hilsy85: yep, he throws tantrums when we walk away. He just kinda shouts a bunch. It's getting a little better now that he's started to crawl and can follow us. But that also means he's getting into things he shouldn't & isn't enjoying the "I won't let you stick that plug in your mouth." talks
grapefruit / 4291 posts
@MrsRcCar: I went out for dinner with my coffee group the other week, A was asleep at 1900, I left at 1915, she woke up at 1930 and was NOT impressed to find DH in charge! DH practically threw A at me when I got home at 2315 and she then woke every two hours just to check I was still close by
Unfortunately I think the tantrums are par for the course and result from the fact that they know what they want but just don't know how to communicate it or deal with the frustration of not getting it.
@Beebug: happy anniversary!
squash / 13764 posts
@Beebug: happy anniversary! Sorry you guys are fighting, hope it cleared up in time to have some nice together time yest evening! Exciting about her baptism, do you have a dress for her? Baptism dresses are always so pretty!
@mewtill: ha they're all doing it then--makes me feel better!
@MrsRcCar: oh yes L is definitely a mama's boy as well--but sometimes he wants more cheese even more than he wants his mama, lol.
@Kemma: I definitely agree on the source of the tantrums--unfortunately I would guess we're in for a long road, since it will be a while til LO can really communicate what he wants/deal with not getting what he wants! I thought I had at least til he turned 1.5/2 to worry about that stuff!
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
@hilsy85: We have tantrums too, usually involving food or me saying no and redirecting her away from stuff.
E has mastered the army crawl (and working on regular) she's everywhere & FAST! She just started to pull herself up on her own, and is getting quick...but she hasn't figured out how to get down when she's bored. We've had quite a few tears from her attempts. We have her 9 month check up today (and Celiacs disease test) and I'm hoping we have finally doubled her birth weight...fingers crossed!!
honeydew / 7283 posts
M is finally crawling after 2 weeks of rocking on all fours (she was SO frustrated!). She's going everywhere and getting into everything. We're in baby-proofing mode and wondering why we didn't do it sooner! She just got her 4 top teeth for a total of six.
Definitely agreeing with you guys on the tantrums, although it's harder for me to figure out what they're related to. Mostly it seems like she's just crying because nobody is playing with her for a second. I just wish she could entertain herself for 30 seconds so I could go to the bathroom! Even if she can see me but I'm not directly engaged with her it's scream city.
