October 2016 moms!

Question for the second/third time moms...we're going to go with a changing pad on top of a dresser rather than a separate changing table. Do we need to buy one of those changing table topper attachements, or can we just put the changing pad directly on top of the dresser? Does it make a difference if it's a keekaroo-type changing pad which seems like it would be less slippery?

@kitkat We put the changing pad directly on the dresser and never had any problems. But then again, we never left her there/ walked away for anything. Plan to do the same thing again.

@jaguar Thought of your comment as I hobbled out to the kitchen for chocolate ice cream last night. The ice cream was frozen very solid, so I think I got an arm workout in

@Kitkat: We have our changing pad on a dresser and I just put one of those grippy shelf liners underneath it. I've never had an issue with it sliding, and honestly, once she turned two I started changing her on the floor. Now my changing pad is a place to store stuff until baby sister gets here.

@Kitkat: I'm unsafe and don't do anything but set it on top. I never walk away from the baby when they are on it, so I'm always there if something were to happen.

@mand4: @avivoca: @whiskers: thanks! I figured just putting it on top would be fine...just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be putting him in imminent danger

@Kitkat: same as the others, we just put it on top. It does move around when she's especially squirmy but overall no big issues.

I love reading all of the updates. Glad that everyone seems to be doing well and finally feeling movement, et cetera.

On Friday, I'm going for my GD test (1-hour glucose). Any tips? I've read that eating hard-boiled eggs before helps...?

After the appointment, I'm hoping to take the rest of the day (unofficially) off and do some nursery planning and/or a trip to Gap and Old Navy for some baby jammies and onesies. And I have a nursery crafting idea that needs to get started or will never happen. Without a name picked out and nothing bought or ready, I feel like I need to take some small steps to get things in order. Anyone else still completely unprepared?

    apricot / 325 posts

@Amorini: me! I'm completely unprepared! So far, baby has about 5 outfits that were gifts and no name. I ordered curtains for the nursery and work has been slow today, so I'm shopping for furniture online. My shower is scheduled, so that should hopefully get me motivated to get prepared...

@Kitkat: We do use a topper and my guy was pretty squirmy so I was glad I had it but sounds like others did just fine without it. There are some cheap options around $20 if you do decide you need one. Like lots of baby items, you can just wait for baby to arrive and then buy things as needed.

@Amorini: I read that it's best to eat a high protein (no carbs) breakfast before the 1-hour test. I had 2 eggs and a glass of milk, but I haven't gotten the results back yet. Good luck!

Oh, and I'm completely unprepared! No name, no pediatrician, no nursery (we don't even know yet if we'll be moving in August or September). I do have a pile (literally a pile) of handed down odds and ends, but that's it! I will have a small family shower next weekend, so hopefully someone will get us the pack-n-play that we plan on using as a bassinet! I figure as long as he's got a place to sleep by October, we'll be ok

@mand4: hahaha, had to giggle. ice-cream, yum!

Following on re: the GTT stuff. I have to do the 2 hour one soon... not looking forward to that.

@mand4: Wow, Iimpressed with the marathon! Good for you!!

@Kitkat: This time we have a dresser/changer and I am going to just the pad on top!!

@Amorini: I ate eggs before my DD GD test and passed 😉 Eat protein if you are going to eat no bread, carbs or sugar!

Today was moving day at work. We are doing extensive renovations, so all offices had to move from the first floor to the third floor. The movers only move furniture, so me and my 26.5 week belly schlepped my computer and boxes to my new space. I survived, but barely. The air was broken upstairs, so it was super warm. Picture of my "do not give a crap" outfit for today.

I get to do this again in two months. Joy.

Also, I haven't purchased much other than a few sleepers and some craft supplies. I need to finish a queen size quilt for my parents before starting on A's quilt. I have a couple of crafts for their room that I need to start on too. I feel so behind.

OB appt today, baby girl still breech (sigh) and face planting the uterus, no pics, just smoosh. Measures fine.

Gotta have my GTT in two weeks - just before 27 weeks - and then another OB appt after getting results back from that.

Gahhhh I'm so over this weekend/week! DD had a high fever Sunday and said her ear hurt, so Sunday was an all day sleep fest in our bed! Come Monday Dr confirms ear is red and gives her antibiotics, she seems fine all day but nap time and bed time are awful wakes in minutes
    Guessing from pressure?!
She was fine all day yesterday so we decided she can go to her sitters today as we have plans, well she wakes at 3:30 coughing in our bed she came woke at 8 and seems fine?! So I sent her!!!! Praying she has a great day! I hate when she isn't 100%

@Amorini: Yes, completely unprepared! We haven't bought a single thing yet and have barely touched on names. We have a few girl name options so far, but are having the worst time trying to think of boy names. DH is still dealing with sticker shock from the couple of times we've ventured into a baby store just to look around.

@whiskers: I feel like an underachiever. I had so much done for H by this time and A has literally nothing. I'm just so tired and DONE by the time H goes to bed and I can't sew until she settles down (my office is next to her room).

Anyone else having trouble sleeping? I fall asleep OK but every night bw 2-4 I wake up and then can't get back to sleep for an hour or two. I don't understand bc I'm soooo tired now.

@Maysprout: Yes, I've had that s whole pregnancy! I think I'mI'm used to it now! sorry

@Maysprout: Yes, sleep has been an issue on and off the entire pregnancy for me. I have waves that are better than others, but unfortunately am in a very sleep-deprived spot right now! On Sunday night I stayed up the ENTIRE night - didn't fall asleep once! Last night I woke up from about 3am-6am for no apparent reason. Ugh. I feel ya.

I've done nothing for this baby either (aside from ordering a new $11 rechargeable battery for our video baby monitor which still resides in my 4 year old's room). At first I was waiting for the anatomy scan to be over. Now I'm waiting for 4th of July sales. Not sure what my excuse will be next week....

Is anybody else having terrible charlie horses in their legs while they sleep? I woke up yelping this morning at 4:30 and even woke up my husband. I remember this from last time. With my pregnancy with my son, I remember they got so bad I woke up in tears. Is there anything I can do to help with these?

  24. Miss Ariel

    nectarine / 2210 posts

@Shantuck: I get them. I think a way of lessening them is eating more potassium, like bananas. Once they are there the best way to lessen the pain is pushing my foot against the beds footboard. But they are still pretty miserable.

  25. Maysprout

    grapefruit / 4800 posts

@Shantuck: any 4th of July sales you have your eye on? I have a few bigger things I want to get, they're more just to get the house set up better than for the baby.

  26. FaithFertility

    eggplant / 11861 posts

@Shantuck: Not this time yet, but definitely with DD, I was told eat a banana before bed?

  27. Shantuck

    pear / 1767 posts

@Maysprout: Nothing in particular. I have a Pinterest board of nursery stuff with some things from Bed Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn Teen, Rugs USA, One Kings Lane, etc. Hoping to pick up some of those things on a sale.

Does anybody know if Ingrid & Isabel ever has any sales? I need to order a dress for a friend's wedding and an anniversary party for my parents and I've been eyeing one there but can't rationalize paying full price for something I'll wear only twice.

@FaithFertility: Poor thing! I hope she feels better soon. x

I know I sound like a broken record but I really do feel frustrated about the baby's positioning. If shes not moving now when there's room, what are the odds she'll move later?

@Shantuck: I got awful leg cramps when pregnant with DD. What I found that worked for me was to soak for 10 minutes in an Epsom salt bath in the evenings, do the "legs up the wall" yoga post for a few minutes before bed and having prenatal massage. I'm sticking to this routine again and haven't experienced any cramping yet.

  30. Amorini

    persimmon / 1132 posts

@Shantuck: For leg cramps (as well as migraines and a few other hormone-related things), an OBGYN from my past highly recommended this magnesium-calcium source: https://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-Ultra-Night-Tablets/dp/B000GFSV0K

Pre-pregnancy, I took 1 in AM and 2 in PM as directed. During pregnancy, I was told to reduce that to only 2 in PM. I can't remember why but I started taking just take 1 in PM and I only get leg cramps if I forget to take one.

According to that OBGYN, regular Epsom salt baths have the same effect which is getting your Mg-Ca levels up.

@Shantuck: @delight: I had them with DD, too! I took magnesium and calcium at the direction of my midwife and ate lots of bananas (which I really don't like, lol). Good luck!

So, my SIL told her parents (who told us on Sunday) that she, her husband, and her kids were thinking about coming to visit this weekend. We hadn't heard anything about it, so I figured it wasn't happening. Then she texted my husband last night (he's travelling for work) asking him to call her today about our plans for this weekend and I'm having a hard time not seeing red and unleashing pregnant rage on her. If she thinks she can give us two days notice that she will be here and I know she expects to be entertained, she has another thing coming. I'm helping my parents move tomorrow/Saturday and T has a bike race on Sunday, plus it's a holiday weekend and we had plans anyway once she failed to call us last Sunday, so entertaining/cooking/cleaning for her, her husband (who is a sweet guy), and her two preteens is just not what I want to do.

@FaithFertility: I'm trying to be nice, but I don't like being a last-minute hostess. If she had told us Sunday, I would have been able to clean up like I want to, but if she comes now, I'll have to speed clean and not feel great about the state of my house (toy/laundry explosion right now).

@avivoca: yeah, "sorry, but we are busy" sounds like the way to go.

My husband turned up our ac probably thinking I wouldn't notice. I have been sweating all morning and am pissed. Also caused me to wake up a lot more last night. 😡

  37. TapDancer

    cherry / 246 posts

@whiskers: Ugh, same thing happening here! I commute home in the hot sun/hot car which is miserable and then come home to a hotter-than-it-needs-to-be-house - so uncomfortable and takes this pregnant body forever to cool down. We have a Nest thermostat, so my new trick is to adjust the temperature down when I'm about 15 minutes away - hehe! DH is accommodating, it's just he can survive in a lot higher temps than I can right now!

  38. TFrances

    apricot / 286 posts

@whiskers: Are you in my house? Seriously! DH keeps setting the AC to 78 degrees (it's about 90 outside) and I am dying! My pregnant self is just sitting here all day sweating and I can't sleep at night. We are in a battle of wills over this stupid thing. Even though I've explained over and over, he can't understand how uncomfortable I am with the heat.

  39. whiskers

    kiwi / 657 posts

@TFrances: @TapDancer: I have a tower fan blowing on me all night as well, and it still doesn't help if the ac is set too high. Thankfully, my husband will concede. I am all for saving money, but I cannot survive if I am not sleeping well at night and getting overheated throughout the day.

@jaguar: You never know... my aunt said when she was pregnant with her daughter, she was scheduled for a C-section due to her daughter being breech. Her daughter flipped head down as she was on her way to the hospital for her section! The hospital sent her back home, since it rendered the section unnecessary and she ended up having the baby naturally. There's always hope!
